Hi there guys' Today I finally took delivery of my RB30 engine blocks from Australia! I am in the UK and have been interested to do the conversion for a while.. An opportunity came up so I took it.. After a lot of research and advise I was told the best block was the late non turbo block which would give a good compression ratio with the rb26 head and would also have the correct oil feed and returns already in the side ready to accept a turbo conversion. After much looking around Australia I tracked down a company with a couple of blocks and they said they were both the correct ones with the oil feeds etc.. However when they arrived today and I checked them out I found only one has the oil feed and returns in the side! Would I be correct to think this is not a major problem and I can just machine the holes in and tap them accordingly? Is there anything else the block will be missing that could be a problem or I need to be aware of?

Thank you in advance

Regards

Lee

P.S. i'll think i'll be visiting here a lot of the winter!

how many blocks did you get?

Yes you can machine them to suit turbo with no issues.

Thank you there.. That is very good news indeed!! I thought that would be the case but figured I would check first!

I got two blocks.. one as a spare. I may sell it on once I have templated the holes into the other block! Is there anything else the block missing te oil feeds will be short on? Or is it all the same other than that?

Thanks again

Hi Guys

The shippng was the biggest expense! Cost nearly £800! More than the blocks themselves!

R.I.P.S and some other dude on the UK forum came back and told me the blocks were scrap and no good for turbo applications.. then some other guy has told me hes has done a few like this! What's what?! Both the guy's that told me they are scrap normally sell blocks themselves!?

Personally I cannot see what can be that different.. as long as the pistons, rods, crank etc are the same and I can put the oil and water feeds and returns in then all should be okay right? I will also check the block front face is smooth above the pump is that was the first thing I looked at.. I assume worst case though I could also machine this area smooth?

Cheers Guys

Lee

the flat spot for the lower tensioner is actually BELOW the water pump, i got mixed up and found out it was a s1 after i bought it. Ended up welding up the area and grinding it flat, engine is about to run in a couple of days now so ill see how it goes, shouldnt be a drama at all.

Would you be able to post a pic of the mod you did no the front of the block? I was aware that the smooth area needs to be below the water pump but I have had the cover off to check that yet.. sounds pretty much like I have a series 1 block though! Doh! Oh well.. where there is a will there is a way! Is there an option to put the tensioner somewhere different. I presume if you had to weld up the front face it's not just a case of it being a rough cast finish that needs machining.. but it is the wrong shape?

Cheers Guys.

So much more positive than feedback I have had elsewhere!

the oil/water feeds are easy to do, definately no worries there. Its just nice to have the stock holes already pre-tapped ready to go, but i wouldnt go throwing the blocks out just yet haha

have a read of the rb30 DOHC guide, it tells you everything you need to know and it has pictures to show you the mounting positions for the tensioner.

    • Oh, forgot to add, A few months ago I was getting mixture codes and the car was using crap loads of fuel. You could smell the unburned fuel in the exhaust, it was crazy strong. Economy was over 17.5 l/100 and usually around 19. I smoked the engine and found a leaky CCV hose which I replaced and then I replaced my two pre cat O2 sensors, I also replaced the MAF. This fixed my mixture codes and improved my exonomy but I'm still 14 - 15 l/100 when pottering about town so something is still amiss. Throttle response is much better and it has more pep but I'd like to know why it's still so thirsty (and I'm hoping that whatever it is gives me a bit more poke).

    • Hello all, currently finishing up a rb25 swap into my s14. Having issues with starting, car has spark (confirmed by pulling a plug and watching it spark), has fuel(confirmed by checking pulse/voltage at injectors all spark plugs are soaked in fuel). Car cranks over and pops into the exhaust with a heavy fuel smell but no attempt to start or run, I have torn the timing cover off and triple confirmed timing, turned the CAS in multiple spots both directions, attempted to start with coolant temp and maf unplugged, checked my fuel lines and made sure they weren’t backwards, checked voltage at cas/injectors/coilpacks, made sure all the grounds in the harness are connected and added a few grounding straps (1 from chassis to block, 1 from chassis to head, and 1 from chassis to igniter chip) I am getting stumped here. As a last ditch effort I made a full grounding harness tonight that’s going to run from the battery and add an extra ground from the battery onto the coil pack harness/igniter chip/ intake manifold/ Wiring specialties harness ground/ and alternator. I’m hoping maybe the grounding harness will fix it here but posting here to see if anyone has any other ideas on what else I can check. My fuel pressure is unknown right gauge will be here tomorrow.  IMG_3206.mov
    • yeah I was shocked when I checked my spare OEM on and as below that's how they come from Nissan. (side interesting note new NEO gearbox and replacement park lack the brass bush on the tips and its just all alloy) unsure about damage to the box currently back at 1110 to be pulled down/inspected and selector fork replaced as he built it previously and given the never before seen failure on his billet forks he is replacing it under warranty. He said he has used always OEM the keyway tab without issue for years so it could be an unlucky coincidence. I did talk to him about the sharp corners and stress concentration too. Re: hard shifts i got 7+ years out of the OEM one and the fork itself failed not the keyway. so could be bad luck as I said or an age thing + heat cycles in box and during fabrication of billet?
    • That's some really horrible design with the way it's cut/shaped! Is there much damage to the box that failed in? IE, new fork and you can go again, or is it a total rebuild again? Id be trying to build that piece from scratch, and getting some reliefs added in the corner to hopefully stop breakage, and then swapping boxes ASAP, and then doing the same to the currently good working box. I'm assuming hard shifts have not been friendly to it!
