How do you read a stock boost gauge on Auto R33....Low boost??

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Hoping if you could help out.

This morning, my mate drove me to work in his R33 S2 manual. Mods to his car, exhaust and bleed valve. May be he can correct me here. Anyway, looking at this stock boost gauge, it was phricken jumping everywhere and boy did it sound good.

As you are aware, the readings are -7, 0 and +7. Well, at full throttle, his boost gauge would read +6 give (approx)

Now to my car.....well, its an auto, and all Ive got is a pod filter without any cai. (done purely for sound and wank factor.........not relevant to this topic)

But with my car, even at full throttle. the boost gauge will not read any more than +2, +3............I mean way down there. Now I can still feel a kick, and coming from a Commo, the turbo is obviously spooling up. My question is, is this normal?

I've heard of thing called, safety boost........is this all I'm doing. Do any autos get as high a reading as manuals? What are other people's auto experience like???

Please help!! :D Any comments appreciated.

Thanks.

Maybe others can support/reject me on this but, try turning the overdrive switch off, and see if the extra revs before the transmission changes gears improves the boost.

hey, do autos give u that nice BOV sound when it changes gears???

yes they do king...unless u are more of a ricer like me and get a bov :D but since i like the flutter noise, im stickin wid my bov...even if my car stalls like a bitch eheh

scotty: yer same thing with me man, thats how they are. my boost gauge reads im goin at roughly 7psi though (that first line after the 0). so everything with ya car iz normal dude heh

oh, and that overdrive thing doesn't effect it

My stock boost guage used to read like that... Since I've replaced the stock bleed valve with an aftermarket one & upped the boost to 10psi (Stock Turbo/Cooler), the standard boost guage reads 3/4 on full boost (between 0 to +7).

Cheers,

C.

Thanks Guys,

Your comments are definitely appreciated. Hmm, so if I get a EBC or bleed valve, it will give me more boost right?........which in turn means more power right...........which means more fun right?? :D

Would you guys suggest it? skyguy3804 you've done it, recommend it?

Oh yeah and ApacheX/hippy a eternal venting bov, well, i have a Trust pod filter right now and thats already hella loud. Suction is great. If I get a bov as well, damn, I can just imagine it now. pffft from the pod and bov..........that could draw some serious unwanted attention! :)

Thanks again!

hey ApacheX - is yours an atmo BOV? i am interested in that sort of sound but i am also in vic where it is kinda a no-no. Not too loud tho - just a little louder than stockie. Do u get lots of unwanted attention?

Been pulled over by the cops for an inspection before? How did that go? Do they know what they're looking for?

Scotty,

Definately recommend it - when you get the bleed valve put on, you'll have to get it dyno'ed to get more boost out of it - who ever dyno's it can set the boost on the bleed valve to whatever you like! - Just for safety's sake - most ppl (inc. me) only run at 10psi (from std 7psi) with std turbo/intercooler - difference is about 15-20rwkw more power!!! - so it's definately a fun thing to do. If you nail it off the line in 'Drive' you should get wheelspin with std 16"x7" rims & tyres. I've been running with 10psi boost for about a year now & never had a problem

let say retail prices..not the cheapest u can find but around that.

New jap brand boost gauge = $300 BLeed valve = $100

All together its like $400 bucks...for maybe $50 more u can get a second hand ebc with the boost display on it. No spikes no worries.

ey man, where u from in vic?

the only unwanted attention i get is from vl drivers that wanna take me :)

i have to rev over 3k for my bov to go off, and since i got an auto, i can just let it automatically change and the bov doesn't go off. but yes, my bov iz atmo and its loud heh

i haven't been pulled over yet (thank god), they straight away look for ya pod and ya bov. ive been told they are the 2 main things they look for, so be careful man :)

scotty, do u have an exhaust system atm? coz if u wanna get a bleeed valve, do your exhaust first

Nah,

I don't have an exhaust as yet, and to be honest, I'm not too sure if I want one or not.

I mean, I understand its probably the first thing to get, but I can't stand a loud drony car........and honestly, stock isn't that bad. Well, I think mine is stock, has two tail pipes in the end looks around 2.5inches thick....... kingKW, maybe you could confirm here. But yeah, a loud exhaust is not something I'm really going for at the moment. :)

if you dont want exhaust, upping the boost wouldnt help much.

mines an auto too. im running apexi twin cham BOV/incorporating the stock plumback. on low rpm it will plumb the charge air back which wont stall the car. on boost the apexi will take over most of the pressure which will give a nice bark.

just wondering what sort of power fig do you guys have with what mods?

ron

ApacheX- I live in the SE Burbs - near the Glen - if you see a white S2 hooning around - gimme a wave!! u got problems with stalling with your atmo BOV?

Ron - u got an Apexi BOV with plumb back? So no stalling eh? Still get that nice Pssshhhh sound? Yeaah wicked

Scotty - I dont really know the size of the zorst - but the piping looks a little bigger than say a Rex or 200SX. Dude, everyone says that upgrading the zorst is the first thing to do to improve performance. The kaki i got is relatively quiet so u dont necessarily need a farking loud piece - your trust pod is probably louder than my zorst so what r u talking about?!?!

king: yer im near there too heheh. if u see a somewhat stock silver r33 stalling in an intersection, with my plates(under nikname), give us a wave

but yeah my car stalls a lot coz of my bov id say. i should get one like ron, meh i might sell mine to get one hehe

    • Hi guys my 94 r33 gtst fuel pump has gone out. I have a walbro 525 ready to go in but am unsure if I need to upgrade the fuel tank bulk heads? Ive heard that others have issues with the stock wiring melting... Ive seen alot of people recommend this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-nissan-skyline-r33-r34-silvia-s14-s15-billet-fuel-tank-bulkhead-hat-top-an6-with-high-current-connector-apex-2-8-delphi-fpg-100?variant=42873255198898 My current pump that stopped working is aftermarket but I had no relay mod or upgraded connectors. Need some advice please. TIA
    • It’s new. It’s the cd009. I did take the transmission apart to mill down the bellhousing and had both housings come off the gears so wondering is something isn’t in right. I am running redline. I can get it in gear running too but it’s just not easier and it’s almost like 2, 4, 6, and reverse all the back gears aren’t happy going in
    • I’ll remember that as a last choice. It’s brand new
    • Got keys and did a walk around the yard planning the landscaping works with the family that I will be doing Main effort: remove all the woodchip in the gardens that are around (attached) to the outside of the house and replace with 10mm blue metal, having woodchip close to the house is a recipe for inviting white ants, currently there are no white ants within the block and I would like to keep it that way I'll be buying some large raised garden beds to grow veggies and stuff, and the woodchip will be mulched with everything else that gets dug up, pulled out, or cut down during works Next will some minor drainage and landscaping maintenance up one side of the house, where the fuse box, AC, and solar stuff will go, about 12 mtrs long by 2 meters wide, I'll break up the soil, add gypsum and then I'll dig in a French drains about 300mm deep x 300mm wide and fill it with agg pipe and blue metal, then level out the whole area with a 50mm layer of blue metal, the soil, whilst currently pretty compacted, will break up well with the gypsum to aid in drainage, I'll then cover the area with a 50mm layer of more blue metal In saying this, the drainage issue is minor, but that little hidden away area down the side is untidy and weedy, and as all of the main elec stuff is there I want it neat and tidy to appease my OCD Again, the material excavated from the French drains with be added to the garden bed mulch, as will some rose bushes and some other crap looking garden plants, and a old apricot tree that is looking worse for wear The apricot tree is currently in a little roundish garden bed that is in the middle of the back yard with few other crappy looking plants around it, that will all be removed, levelled, re-turfed, and is a perfect spot for a hills hoist There is also a area about 3m x 2m between the rear fence and shed that will get some attention, it looks like some stuff was stored there and the grass is dead, that will also get broken up and mulched, and is a prime spot for a pumpkin patch I've guestimated that I'll need: 3 tonnes of blue metal, 12 meters of agg pipe, 5kg of Gypsum, and a hills hoist, so a few bags of concrete as well to set it in place (the house currently has one of those pull out 4 line jobs, whilst it works, I want a retro old school hills hoist), I am also going to run some chickens, there's a great spot for a coop, so a chicken coop to suit 4 of those lovely egg laying bitches will also be on the job card That should keep me busy for a while, and will finish off the back yard ready for a early spring planting of some veggies and berries  Once the main effort is done I'll start out the front, there's a large rock garden that could use some TLC, but that is only minor works Should be fully moved in within 2 weeks, the landscaping works will start then Fun times, retirement is good
    • It happens, that's what your single stage filler is used for.  If it is still visible after the 3 coats of 2k primer, it will be visible after the paint is laid down.  Its hard to give 100% perfect advice without being there in person, I'm very tempted to say stop where you are, fill your pin holes with a single stage putty first then keep going.
