hi there guys i have just purchased a vg30 turbo for my rb20...

and have a couple questions to ask.

1. the turbo didnt come with an elbow so will my stock rb20 turbo elbow fit the vg30 turbo and cooler piping. if not what elbow will i need to buy?

2. is it a straight swap over with the turbos?

3. how much power have you guys got from the same setup?

4. how much psi is safe to run?

5. whats any good tips you can give me befor i put this turbo in?

there is a thread on here if you search that gives a step by step guide i think.. maybe thats rb25 turbo.

im also doing going to be doing this with a stock vg30 turbo on my rb20... on my previous 33 i put a hi flowed vg30 turbo on and ran it at 17psi.. all i can say is it went!!

i had bend one of the lines around... cant remember if it was water or oil.. just did it very gently with pliers wrapped and taped up so as not to damage it. worked fine.

as far as bolting the turbo up, it is all the same.. just not sure of the turbo outlet like you say.

1. depends what compressor its running, try yours and if all else fails just find a wrecker. unfortunately turbo elbows are hard to find.

2. not a strange swap over - its the preferred option if the turbo is hi-flowed, i personally wouldnt bother if it was standard.

3. not sure if anyone has gone the standard swap over.

4. same as any other stock turbo - around 10-12psi

5. get it hiflowed or at least rebuilt. the turbo is older than your entire car dude!

There r a couple of types of VG30 turbo rnt there? A smaller one from the TT setup and the older larger one. I know heaps of ppl who have run these turbo's on Rb20's and loved them. Think they bolted up to exhaust and cooler piping no probs, in ur case ur going to need the turbo elbow obviously. A hi flowed VG30 can be a prick on a street driven RB20 having no torque until boost. Makes Roundabouts interesting when ur trying to pull out.

180rwkw is no probs at 1bar and a quick SAFC tune and thats on an HR31 redtop ECCS with exhaust FMIC and pod.

Wack it on. 1 bar boost and get it tuned nicely and u'll love it. Great cheap upgrade for the 20.

BTW silvertop and RB25 oil and water lines should be fine.

VG30 turbo come in three basic flavours.

VG30DETT/Z32 300ZX Engine DOHC,

T28 flange small turbo used in twin form, will not fit and is no good, too small.

VG30DET/Nissan Leopard/Cima/Cedric Engine DOHC,

T3 flange, ceramic turbine wheel, ballbearing, same as series 1 RB25DET turbo but larger turbine housing (OP6 same as RB25DET NEO)

This is the straight bolt up turbo to other twin cam RB engines that you are after. Get it hiflowed with big steel wheels for bigger power and reliability. The bigger turbine housing means less back pressure so more power potential then an rb25 turbo, also slightly more lag, but not that noticable with standard ball bearing core. These turbo's run up to 9-11PSI as standard from factory FYI.

VG30ET/Z31 300ZX Engine SOHC,

T3 flange, will bolt up, but requires custom dump pipe, not worth the hassle to fit this turbo - to old school, it has steel wheels front and back, thrust bearing turbo, not suited to RB twim cam engines as a bolt up proposition. This is the same as the RB30ET turbo, but has different dump pipe orientation.

i have that one....so this will be good for the rb20 i have heard good stories and bad...

will i have to buy new water and oil lines for it also or will my rb20 turbo lines match up...

i had one on my silvia with a rb20 in it. I ran a 13.6 with low boost of only 10psi made around the 170rwkw makr pretty stock. They are great and no lag at all. I had full bost around 2800-3000 pretty close to stock. There cheap and easily accesible and if you wanna high flow later they also give great results.

i checked the rb20 turbo and 25 turbo i have in the shed.

the rb20 turbo has smaller banjo fittings for the water lines, so you may need to use rb25 water lines.

there was talk about the later rb20 turbo being slightly different and having same size water lines, but i really can't confirm that one way or the other.

If you're 32's a 89' model good chance you got the smaller banjo bolts like me.

so can you bolt a vg30 exhaust housing onto a standard rb25 turbo. does it have a bigger waste gate hole? have a high flowed rb25 bb turbo and getting boost creep (set at 12 psi and going to 17 at 7000rpm) may be able to control boost better with this exhaust housing. have opened up waste gate hole on the turbo from 24mm to 28mm, but still not big enough!

My rb25det is meant to have a neo turbo on it. Can anyone give some insight as to boost i can run etc. Not sure and i know a bit bout turbos but nothing on these bad boys. Came already on the car.

Well that is what the guy saids on it. Does anyone know the numbers for it so i could check

"OP6" is stamped/embossed on the turbine housing, but might be hard to see whilst it's on the car however.

boost is the same as stock turbo really, you should just make more power for the same boost pressure due to the less restrictive housing.

i say max of 14psi on the street, and max of around 10psi for track days if you want it to last.

i had one of these on my rb20 and it was absolutely awesome, sounded like an animal with a straight 3" exhaust. i ran 14psi thru it for a whole year before it let go. when i bolted the standard turbo back on to get home i had to slightly bend my water lines and the oil return was slightly different

its a good turbo set up and it pull's hard, i have a r32 gtst 1992 s2 and i had to change my bango bolts to bigger ones that fit the turbo.

i did this a couple of month ago on my car, i wrote a DIY

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
