to be honest every product needs a gimmic to market (the autotune is no gimmic) and with the vipec they have chosen to that particular feature to speruke.

fair enough. i would have a vipec board in the GTR now but the tune last thursday didn't go ahead because boards weren't available.

so the QT doesn't really save much time at all?

the demand for V44 Skyline plug-in boards has been overwhelming...so much so that the manufacturer has been unable to keep up. More should come available very soon.

Scooby if tuning was based on the time it took then Haltech ecu's would cost $2000 to tune...lol

lol, yeah i see your point.

if a tuner tuned a car according to QT only then chances are the car will blow up. There is more to tuning then just doing the cruise fuel maps

you have to realise that there is alot more to a tune then just fuel ratio's.... if a noob plugs in a vipec and loads up auto tune and tunes the car it probly wont work, the guy from UE said to me, the tuning part on the dyno is the easiest part, its only 20% of the tune, the rest of the tune is setup.

If the tuner gets the setup wrong then your screwed

i do realise that there is a lot of work in proper set up tuning, and expected QT to be an adjunct only, but the Vipec literature is bold and unambiguous. maybe it needs to be changed slightly so expectations aren't raised. my question was just cost vs benefit ie if it's really such a great time-saving measure why Vipec does tuning still cost the same. i understand from what you guys are saying that QT is good, but probably doesn't save that much time, so it makes sense that it's not going to change the cost of tuning all that much.

Yep I agree with the Haltechs - at least the early ones .

I was never comfortable with how they had the software - gauge pressure instead of absolute and their innitial resistance to sequential injection . The early ones possibly were short on processing power and the loom sockets limited in pins and wires .

I don't know if they stayed with the bar graph interface but that was hard to stomach too .

I played with an E6 an F9 and them an Autronic SMC which software interface wise was much much better - once I learnt to set the charge temp estimation table properly .

The major limitations I found to be manifold pressure sensing because setting air temp corrections was so critical and if it's wrong the tune can be a bit eratic .

The only people that ever convinced me that MAP could be ok were the fellas at Allen Engineering (Malalla in those days) but they parked a MAF sensor in front of the engines air intake when they tuned their Autronics and logged everything .

That way they knew how much air was going in and its density in one simple 0-5v signal .

So for me EMSs have to be able to run from mass air sensors which at the moment means a Power FC .

Truth be know the best Skyline computer could be the standard one with something better than flash memory so it could be tuned in real time and saved like in a PFC or other aftermarket computer .

The ViPec does look very interesting and I hope in future ways can be found to make knock sensing systems fast and accurate enough to prevent engine damage .

Need the mass air software , cheers A .

the new firmware update has AFM options for you mass air lovers...was up on the site but has been taken down temporarily.

Nistune does that. However, by the time you buy Z32s or similar, and a boost controller, you're at the price of a Vipec board anyway.

STOP PRESS: we are currently looking into developing a simple dash style interface similar to the Power FC Commander unit. Should satisfy all the boy racers out there...will have all engine parameters (hopefully including knock level) complete with warning lights and shift lights.

call me a boy racer then.... i still like to be able to keep an eye on the knock water temp etc... its a handy lil thing

I think the Boy Racer statement is crap.

My power FC hand controller has saved my engine from overheating to the point of destroying itself at least 4 times or so that i can remember.

The coolant temp sensor on the dash only moves to the H when the temp gets to 110deg, it does not even work if the water leaks out of the car, so it only works when there is coolant / water in the system.

So yeah the ECU temp sensor is a better sensor and it still works when the coolant leaks out of the system, so yeah when my power fc temp was reading 99deg (last time i caught it the thing got that hot) my dash gauge did not move from running temp.

Pulled over worked out the issue, got the car home filling it up every 4 minutes of driving and replaced the radiator and its still going strong, if you have spent 6k on a forged motor then being carefull about engine temps are a must. imo

the only thing i used to display was coolant temp....displaying knock was something that never worried me as my car was well tuned and i used sealed drum fuel when racing and any dangerous knock is shown by the 'check engine' light.

i think for the price of the hand controller a peak hold temp gauge would have been better as my h/c was more used during tuning than anything else.

Anthony you must admit a lot of guys want the hand controller fixed to their dash to impress people...and wouldn't have a clue how to properly use it (ive come across plenty of these guys)

what are these vipec ecu's like compared to something like fcon pro? put the limitations aside with the fcon's "access to tuning software problem" and tell me what you think!

tho i guess this question would be hard to answer since not many people have looked at the fcon from a tuning point of view but surely someone would know :down:

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
