The way I rebuild and engine is to send it to a mechanic who knows what there doing

I'm sure it can't be that hard, but if you stuff any one bit up then it can end in tears. If your not chasing big power, then I'd simply buy a low km's Neo engine.

Step 1. Put RB25 into storage

Step 2. Buy an old shit box engine. Something like an N13 Pulsar, Corrola, ect.

Step 3. Rebuild that engine. Do a search on Google, there will be plenty of information on the net.

Step 4. Find out if it runs

Step 5. Rebuild the RB25.

This way, if the old engine doesn't work it won't matter. Just rebuild it again and learn from it. Then when you're ready, try the RB25DET. that's what I'm looking at doing in the near future, it'll also help me get into performance mechanics in the future.

Good luck!!

Not sure if rebuilding a non-performance engine necessarily translates into building a performance engine, but I guess it couldn't hurt. Seems like a waste of time and money though.

Why not buy Bart (DSTURBD) a case of Wild the sphincter of the universe, and he may be able to help you out

Money issues or not, what if he still wants to learn?

Buy the books, buy a 180b, there is one for sale for $700 which is a great deal, its just unlicenced (who cares?), rebuild it.

enjoy the satisfaction, and take your time with the rb25

Sell it for a profit! Easy!!

well i for one think its great you want to do the rebuild yourself i built my first motor from siezed ( a sohc nissan motor) and learned one hell of alot not sure if i saved much money but it was worth it hearing it start for the first time and knowing i did it

i used a gregorys manual a how to rebuild ohc engines manual and bugged the hell out of my local engine reconditioner who also did all the bits you just cant do in a shed with spanners

i was so proud of my little L20B motor it beat that many of my mates V8 falcodores

spose you could just download / purchase a complete engine manual...

but thats only half of it... you've just got to have the know how to rebuild it and then having the correct tools to suit / taking it to decent shops to get head and block pressure tested and correctly honed/skimmed/shaved as required to suit the build.

For tools I went to Conventrys or how ever its spelt, which supply all the tools ect for standard nissan items, but then even saying that... stuff they sell didnt quiet work

when i took my head of my rb25det... the socket required grinding down the make it fit in the head to get to the headbolts.

but feel free to pm me, i've got a decent copy of the full engine manual etc for R33's

  • 4 weeks later...

watch out. most mechanics don't know how to rebuild an engine. go to very experienced mechanics on the engine you want rebuilt. i got stuffed arounf by creatd motorsport, they rebuilt my rb25det and after about 10k it's stuffed. i'm about ready to go and by a low k's neo. I'll tell you why it's stuffed anf this is the mistake that most engine rebuilders eill make. "OIL returns". very few people know how to do it. I wouldn't even look at getting a rebuilt engine unless i was very confident in the mechanics ability. I spent $4500 on my rebuild to find out later a mate of mine spent $9500 on his and he reckons that a cheap quality rebuild on an rb25det. not worth it just buty a low k's second hand. try to see it running, history, k's, and compression test..

    • Man, different parts but the same numbers is terrible @dbm7! And it doesn't help that most online shops don't list the part numbers at all. They just give a list of compatible models...
    • Slow when hot could also be because its getting more dynamic compression, OR things are getting a bit tighter once it is all expanded. If it were an earthing issue, typically I'd expect you to have it have issues all the time. Unless it's really a combination of both things. Where the higher compression, and things being a bit tighter, is giving that bit of extra load and you do need a slight clean up on the cables/connections.
    • Yeah, this is one of the most annoying things about nissan part numbers... I've got an unrelated example... Image is of the AT output shaft ~ they have the same part#, but clearly the shaft on the left is beefier design to that on the right ...the difference (essentially) is the 'lighter' shaft on the right, is for engines up to RB25DE (this includes RB20 variants) : the shaft on the left is for RB25/26DET(T)....are they interchangeable? Yes...but obviously one shaft is going to be stronger than the other...and, the lighter shaft is around USD115, but the heavier shaft closer to USD150...same part#... ...epc-data usually tells a tale ~ the amayama listing for 39100-23U60 has a note "Longest side is between 60 and 105 cm" ; no such info is there for 39100-23U70 ...and given the great disparity in price between the 2 parts, it makes me at least curious (to the point of caution) where the 'extra money' went? ...ie; these 2 parts have a cost difference that (to myself at least) isn't explained by 'plastic boot'...ie; with amayama there's AUD700 price difference ...plastic versus rubber?...I'm not seeing it like that...and 60cm ~ 105cm...??...that's a huge disparity....something hinky going on here... I'd try searching by VIN, not model... /2cents
    • I don't know for sure, but I'd expect them all to be interchangeable given the diff end and hub end don't move/change between any C34 series. Often Nissan will change part numbers and the aftermarket follows those year ranges; but the original part number change doesn't mean other parts won't fit. The change could be a change in material, internal parts or even just supplier. For example, all the RB gearbox to engine bolts are no longer available and there is a new part number instead. The only change is they went from cadmium plated bolts to zinc plated due to the issues manufacturing with Cadmium. They look different but work the same.
    • One year is a bit concerning. Did you try contacting GSP? It says 5 year warranty on the box if I remember correctly. I'm also running their driveshafts on my S2 Stagea.   You could check the part numbers on Amayama for your year. Here's the link for my 1998 which gives the 39100-23U60 part number. Well, that and 39100-23U70. https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/epc/nissan-japan/stagea/wgnc34/6649-rb25det/trans/391 What does it say for yours?
