hey guys

i've been religiously changing my oil and oil filter every 5000ks, and checking my power steering and brake fluids, but what else should i check ??? my radiator fluid ?

and also i have platinum sparkies that were done probably 12,000k's ago, when should i check/clean or replace those, i was told they last 100,00ks but that shounded strange to me considering most normal copper plugs last 10,000

its just coz im coming upo to my next service and i really dont want to go a stray, i want to do the 110% best service possible every 5000ks

:D

Platinums and iridiums can last up to 100000km or more, they tend to just fail instantly rather than gradually wear out. That's why the electrode is smaller. Generally speaking if the car is running ok, the plugs are fine (if platinum or iridium).

As for your brake and radiator fluids, just check the colour. If they look dirty, then change them. Power steering fluid should only need to be changed once every 50000 or 100000km or so. I keep forgetting to do mine :D You can also replace your clutch fluid, I did mine at around 90000km and probably won't touch it again until 150000km.

Also a quick note in case you (or anyone else curious) didn't know about: NEVER top up your brake fluid. There is enough fluid in the reservoir to cater for your brake pads running out, so just check your pads if the fluid is getting low.

every 5 k k's is fine . here is what u should do .

oil , oil filter , clean air cleaner , check the level on all fluids ( brake , clutch , g/box , diff, power steer ,coolant ,battery ).

inspect drive belts ( tension , cracking ) cooling and heater hoses and connections ( for cracking , leaking ),exhaust system ,clutch pedal ( proper freeplay )brake pedal and handbrake ,brake pads and rotors ,brake pipes and hoses ,steering wheel linkage ,drive shaft boots ( for splits )ball joints and dust covers ,front and rear suspension, chassis and body bolts and nuts ,tyres ( rotate if u run same sise front and rear and corect pressure )lights ,horn ,wipers , washers , air cond refrigerant level ( sight glass ) most of these u would lnow if u drive the car all the time yourself .

sparkies should last 60 - 100 k , u dont ajust or clean platinum ( u ll scratch the platinum off )

every 2 years 4o k k's change coolant , replace air filter , change g/box and diff oil and repack wheel bearings .

Red900ss, why should you bleed your brakes? A braking system in good order will never accumulate air in it (exception: the old Minis have really bad brakes and suck in air of their own accord even when working properly).

I've never had a car aside from a couple of Minis that needed its brakes bled as a regular servicing procedure. You'll be able to tell if your brakes need bleeding, by an inconsistent feel. If the brakes feel better after pumping them, your brakes have air in the lines. But if they feel fine before and after pumping, there will be nothing to bleed.

Boiling your brake fluid might create air pockets, so maybe bleeding them is necessary if you do a lot of track work. But as I mentioned, you should be able tell by the brake feel whether or not they need bleeding.

Well brake fluid is hydroscopic, so no matter what you do, over time it will absor water whereby reducing its resistance to boiling.

Perhaps by bleeding it regularly are helping minimise the amount of absorbed water in the lines. I aso remember reading (dont know how true) that the higher the Dot rating the more hydroscpoic the fluid is.

DJ_L3ThAL, you can't rotate your tyres for the reasons you said. Also many performance tyres are directional so you can't swap them left to right either (not that there would be much benefit anyway).

Tyre rotation is just for lengthening the life of your tyres and even then it doesn't really help all that much. If you have one tyre that is getting a bit bald on one edge, it will still be ok to use because of the tread on the rest of the tyre. I had one tyre that was down to the steel belts due to bad toe alignment but it was still ok to drive in the wet because it was only one tiny bit that was worn through.

So although rotating the tyres will lengthen your tyre's life, if you don't rotate them you can let it get a little more worn out on one edge than you could if the whole thing was worn out to the same level. Does that make sense?

They should know, if they don't then the tyres will have an arrow pointing in the direction of travel. If there is no arrow, then it doesn't matter which side it goes on as long as you don't mix up front and rear widths :D

How do you repack the wheel bearings? What are the signs of them needing to be repacked... noisy etc?

cheers

if u need to replace bearings u go to a bearing shop ( thats all they sell ) . if they are noisy they probably finished , thats the reason u check and repack them before they get water and shit in them .if the noise gets worse when u put them under load ( going on a right hand bend will load left bearings ) they finished .

if u have different size tyres front and rear u cant rotate , u never rotate tyres left to right , even if they are not derectionals , only front to rear .

u shouldnt have to bleed brakes but u must change the fluid every 2 years as it absorbs moisture .

to check gerbox oil u undo the filler plug half way up on the drivers side of the box thats the level . the diff has one at the rear same thing .

driveshaft and cv boots u just make sure they are not cracked and they are still straped so they dont get water in them and corode the bearings , if the boot is split or cracked u replace , u can get aftermarket for 15-20 bucks each .

when u take u r tyres to a tyre shop they will know how to fit them on the tyres are marked with an arrow but make sure u put them on the car the correct way .

crooser to repack u r bearings u have to take them out , clean them , put grease on u r palm and press the bearing on to it , keep doing that until it comes out of the other side and keep rotating the bearing until its all greased .

duncan the noise u hear in the cabs its usualy their diffs not their wheel bearings .

jimx 4 wheel bearings for the 2 wheels for the swift should be like 40 - 50 bucks from a bearing place like bearing industries at seven hills .

i dont know what type of bearings u have but if take one side out and clean it u 'll see the number on it ( they all have numbers on them ) take it to a bearing shop and they will give u one the same . make sure u pack it with ht grease before u put it back on.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
