Hey Guys

Just wondering what the going rate is these days to get a r33 gts-t engine built to handle 400rwkw, i want it to be a strong engine, not an engine i will just boost up for the 1/4 mile. As i am in melbourne which turbo mechanics would be best to go too?. I want to spend about $9,000 tops on the engine internals to achive 400rwkw, do you guys think this is posible on this budget?

What type of modifications can i aspect for $9,000?. The turbo is not included in the $9,000 as that will be purchased in the near future.

Let us know how far you get with $9k. I've learnt that yes you may spend 9k on the engine but your going to spend about the same or less on suspension, diff, computer and so on. I would get expert advise before i went ahead and built a 400rwkw bottom end. Pm Sydneykid as he knows alot about this sort of work.

What have you already done to the car?

What is your horsepower target?

What are you going to use the car for?

What work can you do yourself?

What is your budget?

Be realisitic in your answers and I will try and give you reasonable suggestions to suite.

Hi Sydneykid, ok so far i have a stock as a rock R33 Gts-t, things like exhaust sysytem are no dramas as my mate works at an exhaust shop. Horsepower target hopefully will be around 600Hp, (447rwkw i think). The Budget i intend to spen on "JUST" the engine alone is $8,000 - $9,000, i have a totally different budget for other engine parts. So The Engine has to be built to handle 600Hp for $9,000 is this possible?. The intend use for this car will be a bit of every thing 1/4 mile, daily driver and drift car:D. I will be able to do some things myself but other thAn that i can get it done threw my mates or if worst comes to worst, threw a turbo workshop. So Rember ($9,000) to Spend on engine internals, cams, rods, pistons ect ect all the stuff to make a stable and slightly worked rb25det engine.

PS: I want to build me car around the JMS R33, but without stock internals:p. Turbo i will be using is a Garrett GT 3540.

Firstly you said bottom end, then referred to cams etc, so i take it you mean engine internals.

A budget of $9000 will probably get you the pistons, rods, cams, valvegear, but my concern would be that at those sorts of power figures, what is a realistic km expactancy for an engine with so much hp/Litre. 160kw/L at the wheels is a lot of power.

If driven as you would expect such an engine to be driven, is it reasonable to presume every 10,000-15,000kms that the engine should stripped and inspected... afterall it is a hell of a $$$$ investment.

YEah - I don't think you will get 447rwkw out of the Rb25 without doing somehting radical like stroking it and putting a huge turbo on...

But if you do - I wanna see that !

Hi Shaun, we have a 3.1 litre engine on the engine stand, it has;

JE forged Pistons

Total Seal gapless rings

Carillo forged conrods

ARP rod bolts, head and main studs

Balanced and linished crank

9 to 1 compression ratio

O'ringed block

HKS exhaust manifold

Garrett GT3040

Clevite bearings

N1 GTR oil pump

N1 GTR water pump

Winged and baffled sump

RB26 head, throttle bodies and plenum

Head is ported and both manifolds are matched

(it flows 645 bhp on the flow bench at 2 bar vacuum)

Iskendarian valve springs

Titanium retainers

Tomei head gasket

Jun adjustable cam pulleys

Standard R32 GTR camshafts

I haven't run this one on the engine dyno yet, but it's sister (there are 5 in this batch) made 625 bhp at 7,250 rpm using Elf LMS. With upgraded camshafts and a GT35R, 700 bhp would be easily achievable. As for durability, the sister engine has completed a full season of racing (circuit and drags) and 6,000 k's of road work. It's leak down test is within 3% of when it was new, so another season is on the cards.

Does this sound like something you would be interested in duplicating? Depending on how much work you can do yourself and how many of the above parts are outside you requirements $9K should be doable.

Hi guys, assembling the bottom end of an engine, bolting on the head and setting up tjhe camshafts is best left to someone who has the experience and the equipement. But that is less than 50% of the time it takes to assemble a complete engine. With a limited number of tools and experience many people can do the other 50%. Stuff like bolt on the oil pump, sump, water pump, cam tensioner and idler, flywheel. engine mounts, air con compressor, oil filter, turbo oil and water fittings, power steering pump, cambelt covers, coils, etc etc.

Saves money if you have the experience and tools.

    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off. 
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell. 
    • Final update!!! Got the front bar fitted and sprayed and all sorted now. My cutouts worked great and the indicators aren’t just falling off. 😂
