Hi, just got a few questions ..

First off, i heard that "Redline" Gearbox Oil is the 'best', now my mate is saying it makes no difference, can anyone give me the the facts for this?

and which "redline" gearbox oil to use in my r33 gtst? (I want a very smooth gear change)

2nd, my 4th gear makes that crunch noise when im changing gears slowly, and sometimes with other gears, is it my gearbox or is it cos i change gears slowly?

3rd, very nub question, but whats the difference between transmission oil & gearbox oil? o_O i'm pretty sure they're the same..

4th. I tend to scrape my exhaust when im going up a hill, now, i went on the side and it scrapes, but sometimes i go straight it doesnt?

Going straight is for the low front bumper not the exhaust right?

5th, Does a heavy Clutch make the gearbox harder to use?

6th, apparantly 'fog lights' are illegal when theres no fog.. this is victoria, true or false?

7th, are you allowed to tint back windows darker than the legal limit (vic)? Apparantly its just go to be the front..

8th, what engine oil should i use for my car? GTS-t '96 series 2. with 110,000.

9th, how often should i change my brake fluid?

10th, when replacing your intercooler to another one (a better one of course, eg r34 intercooler), approx how mch kw's it adds?

11th, When crunching gears makin the "KRrrk" sound, does it f*k ur gearbox if u do it too mch?

If it was the best everyone would use it. Its good, but which redline gear oil?

You might be referring to lightweight shockproof which is commonly used on gearboxes having issues...

3rd, very nub question, but whats the difference between transmission oil & gearbox oil? o_O i'm pretty sure they're the same..

Sounds the same

4th. I tend to scrape my exhaust when im going up a hill, now, i went on the side and it scrapes, but sometimes i go straight it doesnt?

Measure your exhaust's height off the ground, if <10cm it is illegal in Vic, raise it until the lowest point of your car is above 10cm.

6th, apparantly 'fog lights' are illegal when theres no fog.. this is victoria, true or false?

Illegal to be turned on without fog, please remove your fog lights if you feel the need to turn them on for attention.

7th, are you allowed to tint back windows darker than the legal limit (vic)? Apparantly its just go to be the front..

AFAIK no.

8th, what engine oil should i use for my car? GTS-t '96 series 2. with 110,000.

See oil thread, there are choices. If your rich, Motul 300V

10th, when replacing your intercooler to another one (a better one of course, eg r34 intercooler), approx how mch kw's it adds?

0, in my opinion, it will change the response though.

11th, When crunching gears makin the "KRrrk" sound, does it f*k ur gearbox if u do it too mch?

It sounds like you already have a gearbox issue, can you rev it a little or wait to let the synchro match? Or be more careful with the clutch?

If not start saving some $$$

And start searching the forum, 1/2 of your questions have already been answered in the past!!!

Firstly, yes gear oil is just gear oil....you will never feel any differences...just like engine oil.

its just a brand.... i personally dont care about what brands i use....but make sure u use EXACTLY what your Handbook suggest.

secondly, if your gearbox is crunching or not falling into gear properly...then id say something is worn inside...

Transmission is gearbox...... no difference.,...but be aware...AUTOmatic and Manual gear fluid is different....

in regards to changing fluids....your handbook should state your service intervals....

and with the Intercooler... it really isnt magic, its not going to give you much gain if you arent willing to upgrade other mods, like boost controller & turbo etc.

lastly, the crunching sound...im not sure if you are refering to missing a gear or the unexpected sound of shifting when your car is stationary...

but if if its missing the gear....yes it can leave markings on the gears within the gearbox.

and like i said before, if its an unexpeted sound..then there must be something worn...you may need to get it checked

hope this helps

cheers

Yeah I've got a worn 4th synchro on my AWD box, looking at Redline as a possible stop gap for the near future - I don't want to have to try and pull out a GTR box unless its absolutely necessary to change the synchro, I'd like to know if there were any other gearbox oil which has a similar effect to the Redline without the insane price though.

I have found that sometimes I can fluke a perfect shift into 4th, as the gearbox warms up, this becomes harder. My mate keeps telling me that I should learn to change without the clutch, but I'm too scared of making it worse lol.

When i got my NSW roadworthy last year, the previous dickhead owner had something like a 20% tint on all windows, I only had to pull it off the two side windows as it was a coupe. A local mechanic told me that the law was the same in NSW and VIC.

well its one of them things

alot of people have their Fog lights on withought rain ...but the cops dont always police it.

as well as tint.....i see a VAST majority of cars with illegal tinting..... but they still get away with it.

cops cant be there all the time to police things.....but even when they are there....

i actually saw a Cop Redeo Wagon/Ute... at night in fairfield....driving behind them...and we..drove opposite direction to a WRX and another unknown vehicle street race from a set of lights....

the hoons were racing up to speeds of 120km/h in 60km/h zone....

STRAIGHT PAST THEM...........VROOOoooOOm........the cop wagon didnt even slow down or think about it.... it just kept going.

i was Gobsmacked and totally shit faced.....

    • Hey keep the ideas coming, I'm always keen on projects! But, problem fixed!  I got a cheapie ozito scope from Bunnings and had a good look in and around the bearing and sensor hole. I couldn't see a smoking gun but the bearing looked a bit strange, especially when comparing with a new one. I thought the cover had come off the bearing magnets.  Sorry for pics of a screen, I didn't have an SD card.     Good thing I had the old one to inspect. So, given I'm like a pit crew with wheel bearings and luckily I had a spare bearing because I f**ked up my parts order, I decided to just smash it out. Got the old one out in about an hour. So much easier when the parts haven't had a chance to rust together yet. 😂 And, well, found the problem.    In the second pic at about the 8 o'clock position, you'll see what I think is the tip of the old sensor.  The new sensor has definitely been rubbing but it's all intact, just a little shiny so I'm hoping it's fine.  The car brakes perfectly now and no errors.  I think the job took about 2.5h in the end. 👍🏻 I really appreciate the help in here as usual. Thanks guys.
    • I was only looking because I saw some drops on the ground but it wasn't alot. Recently had it serviced will ask the mech to confirm. Find it strange that it looks standard though, can see in another photo of a random box
    • So...not sure if you know if that has always been there or why you went looking. It could be old damage from a clutch explosion, or even just the gearbox got dropped somewhere along the line. Basically, you should seal it up to stop oil and dust getting into the bellhousing, but it doesn't matter too much and is not structural. I'd suggest something like a glob of JB Weld. BTW what gearbox oil are you running, I would guess the breather has been spewing it everywhere.
    • Hey Duncan thanks for your reply. Sorry mate I know the photos are shit.  Took another photo for reference. Seems the casing does have a hole in it looking on the net, fluid seeping out. Added a photo
    • Very hard to make out what you mean, is it the squarish hole with redline shockproof (probably) under it? Is that pic from on top of the engine with the firewall to the left of pic and engine to the right? Either way, spray the area liberally with degreaser and try again, maybe circle the part you are worried about
