John: its the actual tyre being noisy and not from lost of traction etc. Generally better gripping tyres are noiser than lesser gripping ones. And thats why I'm checking whats the best compromise between them.

Yep, I know. Was making a remark about how quiet/unnoticeable the tyres were, until they squealed. Other than that, we didn't hear tyre noise. Had the windows down too for the most part.

he actually knows that but he was commenting on it.. generally the 595 are quiet depending...

*nods*

is it a 300kw beetle?

I see what you did there :P

Thats the exact reason why I'm asking. I cbf about the noise on mine as the exhaust will be louder but on her beetle its different. The CR KAI I sold to my friend had some ling longs on them (cheapass) and I didnt know they're noisy until he put them on his cefiro. Its very annoying to hear thats for sure, sounds like bee buzzing.

Yeah come for a drive in mine. My car is very quiet when not getting up it so you would notice the tyre noise if there was anything noticeable. There just isnt. They are just a very competent tyre that do everything you ask of them.

Yea will do. You guys still doing the wash or what?

John: Got ERD to check the loading and speed stuff for 535.

Dave: I called him first but was disappointed with the price he quoted for KU31 (and other models too). Maybe he can offer a better price if you rock up but I highly doubt. The price difference between him and option1 is more than 100bucks for all 4 fitted and aligned.

No one can beat Option1 if they still want to make money on the tires.

They sell them the cheapest to sell more.

Like you always say, the best deal will get your business.

you can better business deals if you continue to buy from one place and always make it clear..

otherwise u will forever be running around looking for the best deals.

edit0- how much are they charging u a tyre?

Question Guys!

I need some help with tyres here. Wife's new beetle gonna be here next month and she's getting 17s for the car, so obviously she'll need tyres. What would you recommend?

Model Noise Wear Price Grip TOTAL

RE001 2 2 1 2 7

KU31 3 3 3 2 11

KU36 2 1 2 3 8

595 SS 3 3 3 2 11

595 Evo 2 2 2 3 9

Size that I'm getting is 215/45/17 and judging from the price I've got here, KU31 (option1, cheapest) and SS (ERD, cheapest) are the best compromise between noise/price/wear. What are your thoughts?

KU31s or 595 evo. I have the KU31s on mine and they are extrememly good for the price.

Get the SS. I've got no complaints on mine. Brilliant everyday tyre.

I've driven on both the SS and KU31, the KU31 is much grippier. Can't comment on noise as I don't hear them over all the other rattles my car makes, or tyre wear as I haven't had the KU31s for long, but I'm much happier with the KU31 than the 595SS.

595 evos are meant to be better than the SS though.

Brandon... I'd recommend Linglongs.

LINGLONGS FTW!

+1 :)

535s are sh*t. don't even bother

further comments:

RE001s are probably a great tyre, but would be much more expensive yeah?

KU36s will probably wear pretty fast, since they are pretending to be a semi slick

4x Ku36 in 18/40/225 - $230ea. Got a slighlty better price from Option1 in person..

I dont have a long term "project car" thats worth establishing the relation with any workshop for that matter so the best deal will definitely get my business.

Call option1 up, $132 each for both 595SS and KU31, fitted.

    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack.
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
    • In my head it does make sense to be a fuel problem since that is what I touched when cleaning the system. When I was testing with the fuel pressure gauge, the pressure was constantly 2.5 bar with the FPR vacuum removed. When stalling, the pressure was going up to 3.0 bar (which is how it should be on ignition).
    • ECUtalk pages don't mention they support the ABS computer (consult port has more than one CAN), so you might just need a different scan tool. But, I would expect ABS is a different light to the brake warning/handbrake light, do you see an ABS light come on for a few seconds when you turn the key from ACC to IGN? But since you said: I'd have a look at the ABS sensors in the rear hubs to make sure they are not damaged, disconnected etc.
    • OK, if it idles at 1000+ with the AAC, its not an idle airflow problem. The cold start valve just gives extra air when the engine is cold, but you have enough air without it to idle at 1000. I think you are back to a fuel problem, sorry. Can you see the fuel pressure staying constant or does it drop as the revs drop to a stall?
