After spending the afternoon making the GTR shite'n'briny for Wheels tomorrow, the master cylinder appears to have shat itself.

So unless someone happens to have a spare floating around and is bored enough to be on the forum... I won't be able to take the GTR tomorrow :)

No, she didn't get to Wheels today. Took the open wheeler though and caught up with the dark side... drooled over Bobs R35 for a while :P Reece had a grin from ear to ear after driving Bobs R34 :banana: saw Mick and we didn't fight once :down:

It was a great day and good to catch up with so many.

Now its time to order in a master cylinder... any suggestions as to where is the best place to get it from?

When my Silvia's master cylinder gave way I ended up getting it re-sleeved, might want to consider that if it's not cheap or readily available. If it's already out a decent Brake place should be able to get it re-sleeved within the day.

Just a thought.

You can get rebuild kits or get them rebuilt. I think most brake places can rebuild them, pretty much clean it, bore it and put the rebuild kit threw it (I think, I haven't done one yet). The kit itself is cheap around $30ish. A whole brand new PBR cylinder is around $240, I'm not sure about the nissan one but someone said it was cheaper (????).

What seems to be the problem with the cylinder Michele?

Started with the clutch feeling as if it wasn't taking up until almost half way, Mark thought he would bleed it, but noticed what looked like dirty fluid coming back up into the reservoir (which is weird) so decided to completely flush it out... then with new fluid in, even with all bleed screws open, it wouldn't pump fluid through lines, as I pumped the clutch the fluid in the cylinder would drop a little then raise again the same amount i.e. no fluid would actually leave the reservoir. We tried for an hour or longer and couldn't get it pump the fluid through.

Are the rebuilds as reliable as replacing the unit? Noticed they are $320 at Just Japs atm.

Sounds a lot like what happened to my VL, was blabbing about it to Mark the other night I think, though was just on the subject of having to drive without a clutch.

If you haven't already, and could be bothered, take the entire master cylinder off and dismantle it. I can't quite remember what spring it was, but there was a large spring inside that had actually broken into 3 pieces. Unfortunately I didn't get much of a chance to learn how it all worked, but without the resistance of the spring until the pedal was almost fully pushed to the floor, there was no pumping of the fluid. Also once it did actually pump the tiny bit at the end, it would appear to just flow back through to the reservoir.

If this is exactly what's happened with yours, PM, reply or call me (0431391359) and I'll find out where we picked up the replacement spring from.

There's a good chance your situation has nothing to do with what I just said above, but hey, it's always possible and worth a shot, especially if you're just going to replace the unit anyway :D

    • Yeah well per the video it took 15s for the stock unit to start up....even if I give it a few seconds discount for starting that is at least 12 sec before you get a reverse camera if you are trying to leave a park.  The android unit is way faster, but 2016 for the stock unit is a long time ago in consumer electronics

    • Next on the to-do list was an oil and filter change. Nothing exciting to add here except the oil filter is in a really stupid place (facing the engine mount/subframe/steering rack). GReddy do a relocation kit which puts it towards the gearbox, I would have preferred towards the front but there's obviously a lot more stuff there. Something I'll have to look at for the next service perhaps. First time using Valvoline oil, although I can't see it being any different to most other brands Nice... The oil filter location... At least the subframe wont rust any time soon I picked up a genuine fuel filter, this is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank. Access can be found underneath the rear seat, you'll see this triangular cover Remove the 3x plastic 10mm nuts and lift the cover up, pushing the rubber grommet through The yellow fuel line clips push out in opposite directions, remove these completely. The two moulded fuel lines can now pull upwards to disconnect, along with the wire electrical plug. There's 8x 8mm bolts that secure the black retaining ring. The fuel pump assembly is now ready to lift out. Be mindful of the fuel hose on the side, the hose clamp on mine was catching the hose preventing it from lifting up The fuel pump/filter has an upper and lower section held on by 4 pressure clips. These did take a little bit of force, it sounded like the plastic tabs were going to break but they didn't (don't worry!) The lower section helps mount the fuel pump, there's a circular rubber gasket/grommet/seal thing on the bottom where the sock is. Undo the hose clip on the short fuel hose on the side to disconnect it from the 3 way distribution pipe to be able to lift the upper half away. Don't forget to unplug the fuel pump too! There's a few rubber O rings that will need transferring to the new filter housing, I show these in the video at the bottom of this write up. Reassembly is the reverse Here's a photo of the new filter installed, you'll be able to see where the tabs are more clearing against the yellow OEM plastic Once the assembly is re-installed, I turned the engine over a few times to help build up fuel pressure. I did panic when the car stopped turning over but I could hear the fuel pump making a noise. It eventually started and has been fine since.
