hey all

two questions

#1 Car detailing. who and where does it best and prices. Looking at getting the car done. I'm in south west sydney and would like to travel as least as possible. but having said that, if someone is the guru, i'll travel.

#2 Window tinting. I really like the midnight express dark tint, the darkest legal tint anyway. Who does it best and prices?

Thanks all

you might not like the price but I think the place that does it best is the smash repair

at 9 rawson st, auburn (on the corner by the divided road). They have a crap website

auto salon d'elegance which you can google if you like, not that it gives much detail.

Just turn up with your car and talk to the guy.

They do a $1000 detail and wax, and you get two return visits free inside the first 12

months. They have a very nice facility and the place is full of bentleys, astons and so on.

You did ask where does it best..

Hey Matt,

Im getting Dr.Detail to have a look at my car. People claim that he is one of the best in SYD and possibly in AUS (As what people speak of him). He is also rated one of the best in www.finalinspection.com.au (number 1 site for detail freaks lol).

Ive actually spoken to him and asked few questions what he actually does, (he is a 1 man team so you gotta book in early) and basically he will work on your car for 6 to 8 hours with different stages from cleaning, cutting, polishing and waxing.. depending aswell with the condition of your paint.

He also uses Swissvax products. I didnt know what it was at first then i googled it. then..damn! those things costs $400.00 a tub. Other than that i saw some pics of his work and i was pretty happy to go ahead with his service. He was a very nice guy and very helpful aswell which helped me decide easier. $400 inside and out. He can come to your place as long as you have enough space for him to work on or you can go to his workshop at Milperra. Give him a call and see if he can help you out.

or if you want you can wait for me to upload some before and after pics after he treats my car.

Let me know if you want his number.

Cheers,

Here is Dr.Detail's contact.

Mark Hockey - 0419 661 170

you can call him anytime to book or let him know your problem.

Oh and let us know how you go with him! wondering what he says about those black sheyat on your pearl.

He is doing my car on April 7th.

Oh and yes inside and out, proper leather and suede treatment plus i asked him if he can look at the ceiling of my car as theres some marks on it. (kids!!) He mentioned that it will be covered aswell!

Dr Detail is indeed one of the best. There are a fair few detailers in Sydney that do a really good job.

Just bear in mind the V35 paint is extremely easy to work on, doesn't take a full blown pro to get an awesome finish on it.

Hey Touge, dont you think they are so easy to damage too..? i find the layer very thin... one little bump and graze ill be spewin already..

hmm maybe my car is just Black... anyhow i just find the skin very sensitive with our cars.

i recon u have to go with 20% of more with the tinting.. the legal tint doesnt look good..

also, i once got a $1k detailing from Final Inspection in Vic, they are the BEST recon by anyone.. and it was a black car.. very hard~

IMO, go to their place, look at how they work/talk/treat u, if he talked like bullshxt, run away.. $1k would be a reasonable price for a PRO job.

You're right there ogz007, the paint is quite easy to scratch as it's so soft. However, most full blown details hardly remove any clearcoat to be honest.. it's in the order of nano millimetres if i remember the figure correctly. To be honest, most japanese cars have very soft paint. Euro and Aussie cars on the other hand, very very hard paint.

Cool, so in terms of detailing the car, does the detailer usually put something on the car other than polish and wax after claying to help the contaminated coating? Or this is wher polishing work its wonders already?

anwyay ill attach a pic of my car before it goes under detailing on the 7th! :)

apologies about the size and the pic is only taken on 3megapixel nokia.

Ill take proper photos during and after Dr.Detail.

To Rianto, theres your brake kits! :3some:

Hey mate,

Dr Detail, definitely has a very good reputation.

I got him to come take a look at my V35 when i had it and i think the quote was around the $300 mark just to remove the swirls and nothing else. Being a bit of a tight ar$e at the time, i decided to give it a shot myself.

Started off very slow and just worked my way through the car.

I used a very very fine swirl remover with a rotory buffer at first. Not much result so went with a slightly more course swirl remover. Much better. went back to the fine one to finish it off.

For the polish and sealers, i used Zaino which give it that very "wet" look, and lasts very long.

Any way, long story short, 2 days of hard work in the garage!

The end result. I loved it!

As for the $400 a tub wax, swisswax make a massive range of products and believe me if he uses the $400 wax, you will pay for the $400 wax.

Ogz your car needs a spoiler :P

Nismo you reckon you were better off doin the work yourself? Personally I just cant justify spending 300-1000$ on a detail... unless theyre using something like the swissvax products.. but even then.. does the $400 wax give a ten times better result than a $40 wax.. but in saying that i know for enthusiasts like us who notice every little detail its worth it

    • Surely somebody has one in VIC. Have you asked at any shops?  Is this the yearly inspection or did you get a canary?
    • This is where I share pain with you, @Duncan. The move to change so many cooling system pieces to plastic is a killer! Plastic end tanks and a few plastic hose flanges on my car's fail after so little time.  Curious about the need for a bigger rad, is that just for long sessions in the summer or because the car generally needs more cooling?
    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
    • OK, so regardless of whether you did Step 1 - Spill Step 2 - Trans pan removal Step 3 - TCM removal we are on to the clean and refill. First, have a good look at the oil pan. While you might see dirty oil and some carbony build up (I did), what you don't want to see is any metal particles on the magnets, or sparkles in the oil (thankfully not). Give it all a good clean, particularly the magnets, and put the new gasket on if you have one (or, just cross your fingers) Replacement of the Valve body (if you removed it) is the "reverse of assembly". Thread the electrical socket back up through the trans case, hold the valve body up and put in the bolts you removed, with the correct lengths in the correct locations Torque for the bolts in 8Nm only so I hope you have that torque wrench handy (it feels really loose). Plug the output speed sensor back in and clip the wiring into the 2 clips, replace the spring clip on the TCM socket and plug it back into the car loom. For the pan, the workshop manual states the following order: Again, the torque is 8Nm only.
