Aem Tru Boost Controller Programming

Hey guys.

I have a R32 with a stock RB25DET and a Wolf 3D v500 ecu, 3" zorst and FMIC. The boost controller is an electronic AEM tru boost controller. It was programmed by previous owner and his tuner. It was set to 12 psi making around 200rwkw. Since I got the car I got yellow stickered and turned all the settings down so that the car would pass the pits.

So it was running 5-6psi. Now I have no idea what all the settings should be. I set boost back to 12psi, but its only running 7-8psi. I don't want to set something wrong and blow up my stock ceramic turbo.

What should the parameters be set to? I read the programming guide and don't understand it.

Scramble Boost: (SCb - 10.0)

Set the scramble boost duty cycle output.

Scramble Boost Time: (SCr - 0.00)

Select the duration of time (0-25.5 seconds)

Spring Pressure: (SPr – 2.00)

Enter the waste gate spring pressure

Boost Setting A: (AXX – A10)

Set the output duty cycle (10%-90%) for setting A.

Configuring the Tru Boost

The Tru Boost has 9 user adjustable options. Descriptions of each option, along

with the abbreviation and default value for each option shown in parenthesis, are listed

below:

Display Units: (UnI - PSI)

Use the buttons on the front of the gauge to change the units displayed by the

gauge. Select from Psig (PSI), Bar (bAr), and Kpg (PAS).

Scramble Boost: (SCb - 10.0)

Set the scramble boost duty cycle output. Duty cycle can be set between 10%

and 90%. The Tru Boost will output the selected duty cycle when the scramble boost

input is grounded.

Scramble Boost Time: (SCr - 0.00)

Select the duration of time (0-25.5 seconds) the Tru Boost will output the

scramble boost duty cycle when the scramble boost input is grounded.

Pressure Sensor: (SEn - I)

Select the pressure sensor to be used by the Tru Boost. The internal sensor (I)

is used for boost levels up to 29 psig. The optional external sensor (E) is used for boost

levels above 29 psig, up to 50 psig.

Alarm: (ALA - 30)

Set the boost pressure at which the alarm will activate. When the alarm is

activated, the LED lights flash yellow and the warning light output (grey wire) is pulled to

ground.

Spring Pressure: (SPr – 2.00)

Enter the waste gate spring pressure. The Tru Boost will keep the boost

solenoid open from 1 psi until boost exceeds the selected value. This value can be

adjusted to reduce lead in boost spikes or reduce spool up time. If the spring pressure

is unknown, a conservative starting value of 5 is suggested.

Bar Graph Full Scale: (FUL – 30)

Set the full-scale value of the sweeping LED lights. The LED lights start at 0 psig

and stop at the full-scale value, increasing in 24 equal increments.

Boost Setting A: (AXX – A10)

Set the output duty cycle (10%-90%) for setting A. For setting A, the duty cycle

is displayed as “AXX”. When setting duty cycle, the gauge will display the current

manifold pressure. When either button is pressed to increase or decrease duty cycle,

the gauge will momentarily display the selected duty cycle before returning to manifold

pressure.

Boost Setting B: (bXX – b10)

Same as A, except duty cycle is displayed as “bXX”.

NOTE: While configuring the Tru Boost, the Tru Boost will stay in the

programming mode until either the run mode is reached, or the power is turned

off. Also, since the Tru Boost does not change run modes while in the

programming menu, the corresponding run mode must be selected before

entering the programming menu in order to view real time boost changes.

To enter the program menu, hold both buttons down for 2 seconds and release

then the gauge will display “PRG”. Hold both buttons again for 2 seconds and release

to move to the first option. Push both buttons at the same time to move to the next

option. The order of options is shown in the menu tree below. As a shortcut, the gauge

will skip to boost setting A if only the left button is pressed after “PRG” is displayed.

Using the Tru Boost

The Tru Boost has 3 running modes. In all modes, for manifold pressures less

than 0 psig, the sweeping LED’s remain off, the gauge displays pressure in units of

in-hg, and the displayed values are negative. In mode A, the gauge will output the duty

cycle selected for boost setting A. The gauge will output the duty cycle selected for

boost setting B when in mode B. In the “OFF” mode, the solenoid output is turned off.

Press and hold the left button for 2 seconds to change run modes. The order of run

modes is shown in the menu tree below. The gauge also remembers the peak boost

level achieved. Press and hold the right button for 2 seconds to display the peak boost.

Press and hold the right button for 4 seconds to clear the peak boost value.

Never used AEM boost controller before.

But these things are universal.

Scramble is a temporary special mode usually with a press of a button that ups the boost pressure for a specified ammount of time before going back to normal boost.

Duty Cycle controls boost pressure, upping it naturally ups boost. Only turn it up slowly and after verifying in 3rd gear with WOT it's the right pressure, which then that it's not going over your target boost pressure.

Gain aka waste gate spring pressure controls how aggressively boost will be delivered (too high boost pressure it will spike, too low and boost pressure takes longer to build), so it's a balancing job to get the right gain... usually gain is best left to tweak on the dyno

Every car setup and boost controller is unique, if I said use 47% duty cycle, for me thats 14.7psi with my Gizzmo MS-IBC.. but for you it could mean 30psi and instant turbo death. Start from lowest setting; 10% duty cycle (and gain set to 0), and work your way up in 5% increments.. once you get to 10-11psi, start moving up by 1-2% increments until you hit 12psi, then start tweaking the gain. Only way to test the duty cycle settings is by finding a nice long stretch of road and having the throttle wide open in third to see how high the pressure gets to.

Cheers man, that makes sence. I thought all I would have to set was max boost and it would be good to go, but apparently not.

So would it be something like my wastegate on stock turbo has a 6psi spring. So if I have a 50% duty cycle would produce a 11psi setting?

What should my spring pressure (wastegate crack) be?

Read how a turbo works, how a electronic boost controller works, Re-read your instruction manual over and over, re-read it, and then re-read what I've said, then re-read it again, maybe re-read it again and if you still don't understand please do yourself a big favour and take it to professional because you it's not a matter *if* you blow you turbo it's *when*. If you set it to 50% duty cycle straight away you will most likely get about 20-30psi and blow that turbo.

Just a quick update on how it works. They now have how to videos on the site to explain it all to you.

Scramble Boost: (SCb - 10.0) Off as I don't need a NOS/scramble boost function

Set the scramble boost duty cycle output. Not Needed

Scramble Boost Time: (SCr - 0.00) Not Needed

Select the duration of time (0-25.5 seconds)

Spring Pressure: (SPr – 2.00) 5 psi spring on stock turbo

Boost Setting A: (AXX – A10) 50% duty cycle give me 12psi form
