hey ill just give a short descrip of my car, and want some suggestions of what to do.

alright first off. its a 93 model r32 gts-t, 75,000 on the clock, v.good condition, running a k&n panel filter, hks superdragger exhaust 3" all the way with a larger tip about 5"?, 6 finger brass button clutch, quik shift kit, turbo timer, no boost guages or anything, now im gonna be doing stuff bit by bit, just wanna know where i should start, any suggestions?

Next I would say buy a boost guage and then some sort of boost controller to safely turn the boost up a little bit.

---On the cheap---

$100 for autometer boost gauge

$60 for a GFB bleed valve

---money is no problem---

$200-$300 for some jap brand boost gauge.

$400-$1000 for an electronic boost controller of some sort.

It is comming towards summer so I wouldn't be putting the boost up too much on the standard r32 intercooler.

next logical step would be intercooler.

---on the cheap---

$200-$400 for an R34 GTT intercooler (direct swap but it is almost twice as thick as the stocky. is flowing and cooling enough for 206kw in standrd form on the R34 GTT

or

$600-$900 GTR intercooler (plus piping to suit - maybe another $500)

---money is no problem---

$1500-$2500 for a NEW good Jap intercooler kit (with everything required to fit it..)

at this point you could go turbo or fueling.. probably safe to do both close to one another..

turbo

---on the cheap---

$400-$600 for an RB25 turbo (remember to use the RB20 turbo wastegate acutator so it will run 10psi in stock form compared to the 7psi you will get from the rb25 wategate)

---money is no problem---

$???? for some high spec JAP brand capable of some magical dyno figures..

Fuel pump and computer

---on the cheap---

$100-$250 for a GTR fuel pump (it flows 195L/hour compared to R32 GTST pump which is 135L/hour)

$200-$300 for a Standard ecu rechip for better fuel maps (also removes speed limit and can raise rev and boost limits)

---money is no problem---

$300-$900 for a Bosch or SARD fuel pump

$1000+ for some after market complete ECU.

I think that after this point, you would be looking at some serious money for cams and head work and so on.

I've only listed engine mods here, there is also a whole world of suspension goodies to spend your hard earned dollars on..

WHITELINE is a good AUSSIE place to get stuff for your car.

ROY from these forums has the whole package from them (and when you find the page on their website for the R32 GTST's, the pictured car is his I believe..)

Other than them, JAPAN is the place to go for tested packages for these cars..

Don't forget to save some money for the 100,000km service too..

Damn, can't beat that essay. It's pretty comprehensive.

Get a boost gauge (100 or so), then i'd be going front mount intercooler (you can do it for less than a grand if you know someone who welds) followed closely by a pnumatic boost controller( less than 150). You can hold a bit more boost safely that way and a bleedvalve is cheap too.

The stock actuator will have have boost dropping back to about 10psi at 6500rpm no matter how high you screw up the boost, so then you can get an adjustable actuator (HKS is 270).....and the list goes on.

Don't forget suspension and brakes or you'll have a real fast boat that'll want to understeer into walls and guard rails and gutters and stuff

100,000km service is probably the major service that you will get for your car.

Main things to change for safety are...

water pump

timing belt

radiator hoses (if they are brittle)

diff oil

gearbox oil

brake fluid

clutch fluid

power steering fluid

spark plugs (if they haven't been done for over 20,000kms)

BELTS (make sure the mechanic checks these properly)

radiator coolant

you know.. all the things that are important but hardly ever get changed...

oh.. clean your Air Flow Meter too.

and your air filter if it is an aftermarket one.

any mechanic can do those sort of things above.

Bigger turbo for $1000... I don't know.

I just got an RB25 turbo and put that on mine and I'm happy enough with it.

If you were to pay about $2000, then you could either get yours rebuilt or get a new ball bearing GT28 of some sort which should support about 350hp.

If you don't have a regular mechanic, then all I can recommend is my one.

He has already done my 100,000km service.

But I changed alot more than what I listed above.. and it cost me just under $2000.

(I had to change the radiator and all the bushes..these were the main costs.)

I did the cam belt and waterpump at the same time myself.

The waterpump cost me with gasket $80 and the genuine cam belt with markings on the belt to make lining up the cam and crank easy was $90. It took roughly 1 day.

If you do decide to go it by your self let me know and i'll rip the few pages out of the R32 Engine manual I have which gives a step by step guide and what tools you will need. i.e harmonic balancer puller ~$20.

What ever you do don't put a bigger fuel pump in the car until either yours is dead or you require the extra fuel due to bigger turbo's etc.

I was making 152rwkw on 12.5psi & stock IC with a slight fiddle of fuel pressure using a cheap bleed setup on the fuel pressure regulator. Mid range and top end AF's were pretty nice.

As soon as I fitted a bigger fuel pump to allow the top end AF's to be nice the mid range would be leaning out heaps.

So Don't put a bigger pump on it unless you have to, you will loose power. :)

hey gtst

i noticed on a thread that you had someone to recommend as a mechanic in the sydney area. as i also need to undertake close to $2000 in mods & repairs very soon i was wondering who you mechanic is.

also the R34GTT intercooler is not a direct fit (as i found out) as its pipework is the same as a R33, ie one of the pipes points the wrong way

    • This is the territory of the "Stage 1/2/3 Golf GTI/R" or otherwise off the shelf tune with (relative to before) minor mods. It's easier now. Downpipe and Tune and boom, big increases. Stage 1 OEM+ is where it's at. This is where the niche evolved into and it's really easy to see why. It's rare to even NEED to consider changing turbos or going to aftermarket ECU's or building bottom ends for more power. Stage 1-2-3 will get you a LONG WAY. Civic Type R turbo GR Yaris/Corolla Anything with B58 (MKV Supra/x40i) Anything BMW in General Anything Audi in General Any turbo AMG RenaultSport Turbo offerings Korean Elantra N/I30N Ecoboost Mustangs Focus RS? List goes on. I would argue in the future it won't even need to go on... M3P is pretty rapid out of the box...
    • There is a way, but it's not with the same cars. You need to find the same vintage of car, that we had. Realistically, that was an affordable car with aftermarket parts around. So what people need to find is a car that had a decent base in its day, and can be modified. They're looking for a car year make of 2010 to 2015 really... Aus could have done it if Holden didn't fold as V8 commodores were cheap, and if Ford didn't get expensive thanks to COVID, then you could cheaply play with FG Barras. Realistically, those are just a bit heavier, four door skylines. I'm sure the US and UK have similar cars they could find.
    • Haha I do that.. thats when it chirps..The bit point for me is almost non-existent. Otherwise I stall it. But yes, in terms of performance, the clutch is solid af.
    • Greg speaks wisdom. These dirty old Datsuns are only value when they are cheap. When they are not cheap, there is no value. Sounds contradictory, but it's true. We are now 20 years past the hey day of modifying cheap 90s JDM cars for small amounts of money. This is a different world. If you are rich and can afford not to care about what is effectively wasting money on an old Datto shitter, then I have no reason to argue against it. But if you are wanting to experience what we all experienced back in 2005 (and I bought my car last century!) then there is no way to do it.
    • Short answer: No. Medium answer: No, because you still need to conjure the things out of thin air to bolt them to a NA to make it a NA+T. Long Answer: No - The things you need to conjure - meaning a turbo, intercooling, manifolds, exhaust, intake/manifold/piping, clutch, injectors, fuel pump, AFM (?), ECU + Wiring (woo, N/A loom fun) have to come from somewhere. You could have many scavenged these things from an OEM car that someone had upgraded from and use some of these. This will be cost prohibitive now, especially so in the USA. You'd probably pay the same for newer, upgraded components that are better than old OEM stuff from 25-30 years ago. None of these big ticket items are re-usable for the N/A car. Why not buy new and upgrade while you're there? The only real consideration is turbo and fuel sizing and determining whether you want to stay within the bounds of the OEM engine or get into rebuild territory. These limits ARE lower with a N/A motor and especially N/A gearbox at the starting point. And if you're gonna upgrade those then you may as well consider having them built to begin with. Because everyone here knows you're never far from that next engine rebuild once you start making the power you want... The cars you see on the internet and SAU etc have been built over decades. If you're really clued in... you would sell your US car to somebody for what you paid for it. You would then scour AU JDM pages or SAU and buy a car like Dose's on this forum with your powerful American Dollar. This will save you so much money in the long term. Importing it could be tricky. Or it might not because USA. I have long said the only reason 90's Japanese stuff took off was because a) Japanese people had Japanese cars so that is what they used b) Australians could import these cars to Australia with very minimal changes and use them on the road here c) Neither country had well-priced access to US or EU Sports Cars. I don't believe the JDM scene would have taken off in Australia at all if we had EU priced EU BMW M offerings, or more especially the AUS V8 Scene would never have existed if we had the multitude of US cars like Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes at the prices you folks do. After all - Do the math. I would say put a V8 in your R34 and that's the smart way forward. It is. I did it. I know this from my own experience. But at that point there's no reason to simply not buy a C5 or C6? It would be simpler and easier and cheaper and bette-
