gday,

my R33 breaks down as it revs up under load around 4000RPM, sometimes its drive through it other times it wont, at this stage it doesnt seem any worse as the engine gets hotter.

The car has come with a high flowed standard turbo but im not sure what boost it is running yet. Ive read in here that problems like this are common and is normally caused by faulty coil packs or a spark plug gap issue.

my questions would be related to what is better...

Yellow Jacket coil packs or Splitfires coil packs?(i found new RB Splitfires for sale at $575 for the set)

Iridium NGK's or the normal NGK spark plug?

FYI: a not so far away mod will be fitting a GT35 to it and boosting it up, the bottom end already has forgies in it so i would like to give it a good level of boost if the fuel system allows me, so would my decision on spark plugs and coils come back to haunt me if i try and save a dollar now?

are Splitfires the best ones on the market for this engine and a good upgrade to suit the GT35?

is my high flowed standard turbo worth selling once i upgrade? what could it be worth?

thank you in advance,

Gonz.

one of the possible reasons why no one's replied to your topic yet is because all of the questions you've asked have been covered very very often.

have you used the search function yet?

anywho

Splitfires - i've never heard of yellow jackets before. They'll also be suitable for your GT35 upgrade, but i do not suggest buying them until you run your GT35 and you have ignition problems, in which case it would then be a good time to upgrade to the expensive splitfires.

Iridium NGK's or the normal NGK spark plug?

Normal NGKs gapped to 0.8mm will be fine

If you're in NZ, i'd be interested in buying it . . .

PM me and let me know.

any other questions, use the search function first and THEN make a new topic :P

hope this helps

yeh man i did search and ive read heaps but i still didnt really find the answers, however i did find that there is a common problem with the standard coils and that covering them in tape may help or prolong its life, i also found that i should set my plug gap before spending money on coils but i didnt really find an answer on what plug is best and why, but i will be doing this first thing once im back home!

my fuel system is standard and im yet to see what computer it has, i bought this car from my sister in law, she is only telling me what she remembered the car having when she purchased it over 2 years ago, so im yet to check it out to see exactly what i have, i got the car 2 days before i left for work so i havnt had the time to look into it as im still away, for all i know the fuel system could have been upgraded as this car came with nitrous fitted and she was told the bottom end was rebuild to handle more boost when a bigger turbo was fitted.

Im going to track the old owner down and see if he can shed some light on the mods, ive gotta get a picture of the car up to see if you guys recognise it from a couple of years ago!!

ps: Sorry EliSun, im in Perth over in WA, so i couldnt be any further away from you mate!!

well lucky for me, ive put new plugs in, gapped them at .8, taped them like a thread i found said, got it all back together and took it for a drive, now she revs and pulls clean all the way to 7000RPM, woohoo!! so luckly i can hold off on the coils now, cheering, this is the 1st time its ran good since i got it afew weeks ago so im stoked at the power it has, they told me it had 295rwhp, i recon its close, ill be getting it dynoed soon for peice of mind to make sure its running the best it can and to learn more about it all too!

    • Drilled the rubber out on a slow speed and it didn't catch much at all. Probably only half a dozen holes was enough to shred the rubber and it dropped off easily leaving the inner sleeve behind. Will tackle that later
    • I havent bought a manual cover for the dash yet and no cluster change, won't bother me too much, I just need to get that auto box gone, manual in! I miss my manual. 🤪. We started last weekend and managed to get the box out. Planning to start putting it in this weekend and then order a single piece tail. We were super careful to take time and not damage anything. It's my first time working under the car.  With my S15 mainly worked in the bay. This time, it was a headache because of three or four bolts only. They simply didnt want to leave thei homr and the one securing the tailshaft, another above the GB, and the one securing the lipstick was a shit. Mates mate, Davo caught fire 🤣, nearly opened his chest up with a grinder 🤦🏽‍♂️ and both mates nearly had a plate from the box land and slit their head open. Fun times. We all survived. Not the easiest working with limited access on jackstands. As I'm sure we can agree these are the memories which make us love our car. For all three of us, was an awesome weekend and Sunday 3.30am before tools down was a fantastic effort. I need to upload pics, but looks like it needs to be via Url now. We used to be able to just upload pics back in the day. It's been that long! 🤪 Im currently spraying rustoleum under body, not because it's rusted. It's super clean, but just so it's protected for the next 10 years. There was a few surface rust spots. Which pretty much wiped off with a 3M scourer.  Really impressed with how well the previous owner maintained it. Bank account went down so quick! Service, then GB - managed to get a spanking new 34 genuine box from Nissan. All the rest of the conversion parts from Kudos.  Went with a Nismo short shifter. New pedals and Exedy Clutch and FW. Ordered the Prp Rear Main Retainer kit which should arrive Friday and my first engine mod part just like I did with my S15 will be the Tomei Expreme Turbo Outlet. Already on order. It'll likely sleep next to me on a pillow during the coming months. 🥰 Last build was on my JET200GT profile and on SAU and Hardtuned I had documented the build. Planning to try to do that again. Brands feel scarce now. Wish we still had ARC and Apexi parts readily available. Exhaust - need some advice on this. I had an Apexi exhaust on the S15 and loved the tone. My mate had a HKS HP Silent on his 33 and suggested I go with that to avoid drone. I can't remember hearing an RB25DET running that so will likely need to wait for a meet or something to hear it.  Not after big power, just enjoy building it, and drivability with minimal negative attention.
    • Have a chat with Ben at Moore Performance or Jesse at JS Performance.
    • Thanks both. All good advice. Reminds me of drilling through stone wall for drainage pipe 😬 I'll let you know how I get on if I still have use of my hands afterwards 😅
