hey guys recently just got a skyline r34 gtt 4 door naturally aspirated, im new to skylines and high peformance cars and i wanted to find out what mods i could make to my car to get the most power with out applying a turbo. ive got about $3500 to spend at this stage on engine mods, what should i do first?????

Extractors, Catback Exhaust, High Flow Cat, High Flow Panel Filter.

Then spend the remainder on tyres, sway bars and springs.

I know the second part isn't directly related to getting power out of the engine, but it will help in making use of the power.

I done my suspension, tyres and brakes first before touching the engine.

A good tyres will help with accellaration, traction, braking and handling. Springs and sway bars will help lower the cars centre of gravity, reduce body roll and allow you to take corners and curves in less time.

If you're purely after outright power without a turbo then it's going to cost a lot to get any big gains. Don't get me wrong, it is possible, and I respect those who go down the path of modding an N/A Skyline. To really get big power though, you're going to have to do a lot to the engine internally, and really a RB30/26 build with high compression is the best way to get big power out of an N/A Skyline engine.

The R34 25GT Sedan has its fair share of weight as well which doesn't help.

You should be able to extract a decent 130rwkw (guesstimate) with some bolt-on mods. You want to get an N/A breathing as much as you can before you hit things like tyres, sway bars and springs.

Going for big power gains on an N/A R34 is (1) difficult and (2) costly.

What everyone has said is spot on pretty much. With your budget, the only real power mods you can do are exhaust and intake. I'd really recommend going on suspension and tyres first though, it'll feel like a whole new car. Then when you get some power mods, you'll get the most out of them.

In reality the best way of getting power from NA skylines is a Four Step Process

1 - Unbolt RB25

2 - Sell RB25

3 - Bolt in VK45DE/VH41DE

4 - Drive Away

Costly to do, but in terms of $/kw, it's the best value upgrade there is - no replacement for displacement!

There's three ways you can go with extractors:

1) DKNE Extractors

2) Coby Extractors

3) Custom

A group buy looks to be in the works at the moment with extractors, so your timing looks to be good :P

What you spend on extractors will depend on a number of things, including whether you get them HPC coated or heatwrapped. Also DKNE are an aussie extractor, the Coby's come from NZ so there's freight to factor in there, but group buys generally help bring that cost down.

Custom extractors obviously costs a lot more (generally)

exhaust and ecu. if there is money left over then suspension. (look into whether a nistune daughterboard from a turbo 34 can be used in a natro 34 ecu as this will make it much cheaper than a stand alone ecu and give good results in both power and economy)

lowered suspension will only help with handling in the corners. in a straight line you will get better acceleration from stock suspension. this is because it transfers more weight onto the rear wheels giving more grip. this is why drift cars have stiff suspension and drag racers have soft. also stiffer suspension on rough roads can also result is less traction as it will bounce rather than absorb the bumps. so if where you live has crappy roads, chose your suspension carefully.

yeah wasn't sure about it. on the nistune website they have the turbo ecu but no mention of the NA. how different are the ecu pinouts and would it be possible to plug a turbo ecu in and load all the data back on to it? (use the nistune software to retrieve the data from the NA ecu then put it onto the turbo ecu then tune from there)

well uras says he uses r34 turbo ecu's with the daughterboard in NA+t's so you would assume that it should be a reasonably simple swap, and then you could just get a daughterboard put into the turbo ecu and load all the NA data onto it. i have pm'd uras and also 666dan for more info on how compatiable the turbo ecu is with the NA loom. but if it works it would be much cheaper than a full ecu, and provide just as good results.

things you need too make a n/a go you need to get more air in so bigger valves port and polish work and cams ..you need a bigger bang in the engine so higher compression ie differnt pistons and or shave the head ..you need to get the exaust flowing more freely so a good set of extractors and free flowing exaust system .

doing any of these without doing all of it will only end up in mild gains . ive built a shitload of 6cyl speedway engines over the yrs and have a fair idea of what it take's .

when you have done these mods take it too a good tuner to get the timing set up right for it too run sweet i think however 3500 wont be enough to get the maxuim power from your engine

^^ Mad082, if anymore progress has been made let me know. am very interested as your suggestion above would be better in alot of areas over a SAFC2 but more bang for buck than a R34 GT-t PFC.

I have a SAFC2 but am yet to getting around to have it installed and i can't see me spending $1200+ on a apexi PFC.

after re-reading that previous thread Nathan provided the main problem was copying the data off the NA ecu. geez, i hope someone has managed it.

666dan messaged me back saying that it does plug in but you get a few errors due to different sensors, but it could be done.

just thinking about it (the downloading the BIN file issue) how different are the tunes on the NA r33 to the r34 NA, and could you use a r33 one as a base and then just alter it from there?

yeah its only gonna work with alot of fking around.

i would've gone that path, instead i got a emanage ultimate as its much less of a hassle.

most tuners who do nistune (apart from status) assumes the NA R34 ecu is the same as the turbo one so theyy say it will work (i rang 3 authorised nistune dealers in syd and they all said yes even tho they have never done one before)

    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
    • So, a bit of a side trip, but one that might be interesting for people with JDM cars and japanese head units. I know @Pac previously posted about a carplay/android auto adapter he installed which used the AUX input, and @V35_Paul put in one of the Tesla style units that replace both screens. The option I went with was a Lsait LLT-YF-VER5.87_2 (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Lsailt-8GB-Android-Multimedia-Interface-for_1601187633672.html). Price was $1,150 for a single unit although they are much cheaper if you are willing to buy 2....$857ea. Make you you get the version 2 not version 1, it is faster and has a better UI - this is the manufacturer listing: http://www.lsailt.com/product/348.html. BTW if you've never bought from Alibaba before, don't be concerned....these guys can't stay in business unless they are responsive, ship fast etc, they were excellent (probably faster shipping than most local places) So, this was my task for a lazy Sat afternoon....looks complex but was all done in a few hours (it probably helps that I had some of it apart before so it was a bit familiar). I also decided to add a HD USB drive recorded at the same time and the unit also supports an aftermarket reverse cam (if you don't want to retain factory) and also AV in and HDMI out It looks much worse than it is, in fact in was genuinely all plug and play (no custom wiring at all).
