hey, i was just driving to band practise this afternoon and my skyline started jerking under acceleration (felt like it wasnt getting enough petrol even though my foot was pushed down).

So after this i babied it home, it than started doing the same thing just at 60kms at around 3000rpmish.

I pulled over checked the engine bay and everything wasn't leaking (aside for a bit of caked oil around the turbo manifold)

I had to pull over again and let it idle, this time it actually died, so i started it again and it started find kept its idle fine.

So i continued to drive home and it would do the same thing where it would jerk (felt like the engine was being starved of fuel) at 60ish.

So I'm new to skylines but i'm fairly sure this is a fuel pump issue. Though about a month ago i came home and the car wouldnt idle one day after a bit of a drive and idle really radically going

from 500rpm almost stalling and back up to 2000rpm ect. only lasted about 10 seconds though.

Would this be my injectors? (pretty sure its still the stocko injectors) and is there a way i can test them at home? Could a dodgy spark plug lead or spark plug do this???

I've just had a major service done last week (belts, pulleys, thermistor, waterpump, timing belt) So i'm pretty sure its definitely the fuel system.

thanks in advance hamish

was it doing this?

afm prob

if so its prob your afm mate

not really like it would drive completely fine for one miniute reving all the way. than the next you'd put your foot down and the revs would just continue to drop than cut back in for a split second and drop. and than it would kick back in and drive normally for a bit longer (happened around 3-4000rpm) could be the AFM though, I'm going to replace the fuel pump and check the AFM.

ALso if it is the AFM what am sposed to do? just replace the air/fuel mixture sensor unit? are they expensive? or can i open it up and check out the joints (i'm a 4th year apprentice electrician)

checked the fuel filter, changed it (it was clogged up to shit house), cleaned and sprayed the AFM and pod filter. Added some "nitrous" brand in tank fuel injection cleaner.

turned the car over still doing it

revs between 2500 - upwards misses or something just drops out of rev for a split second tries to catch up to where you were revving it than cuts out again and so forth.

changed spark plugs with iridium expensive ass ones (original spark plugs were f**ked), and brought new super spark coil packs.

turned over still doing it!?!?!?

Is there anything else that could be the problem i'm running out of money and need to get the car going.

had another look under it and noticed a little bit of oil from the turbo (could this be a turbo related problem)

or do i need to buy a new AFM?

should i just take it to a mechanics? (will be expensive as i will have to tow it back and forth)

if anyone knows of any good skyline mechanics or friends in logan help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey mate my mates car was doing this when he first bought it. after alot of stuffing around it turned out to be someones dodgy wiring off the ecu. 1 wire was hanging doing nothing and every time it touched something it stuffed the car up. check wiring otherwise sounds like it could be the fuel pump dropping volts. not uncommon. i suggest you get a multi meter onto fuel pump and some fuses and check everything. good luck

Oh thank god...

I just picked up my R33 Series 3 GTR about 5 days ago and she does this at least once every few days. Had no issues yesterday but driving home from work today, she died on me twice as the power just drained...ks dropped off, boost gauge needle went nuts, revs dropped to well below 1000 and then just died altogether. i was able to keep it alive for most of the drive by keeping the foot down and revving higher than i usually would, but this didnt always work. Luckily its under warranty for the time being...but i live about 90 mins from where i bought the car. so...this is a pain. do we have a definite cause - the afm or fuel pump - or is it a random thing?

Ok, so, I just had my GT-R fixed, which was having many of the same symptoms as yours.

AFM problem. Only, not your traditional sort of AFM problem. The vacuum hose connected to the AFM on my GT-R had become disconnected and so the AFM was receiving faulty readings and causing the car running problems. The boys at the dealer hooked the hose back up, switched out my AFM just in case it was also contributing to the problem and sent me on my way. Hasn't missed a beat since. Might be something to look at. Failing that, get the car up on a dyno...the computer should be able to tell you whats gone wrong and where.

    • I already have the ability to datalog the voltage... what I can't do is correlate it to what the gauge is showing when I'm looking at the data at a later date. Or something like this. Except getting the oil to 125C+ involves me going 200+kmh at the track so you can imagine this is a little tricky unless I do something like note what the voltage is when I am at the top of 5th gear so I have a point to reference on. Drove car today. O2 still reading richer because hopefully not a leak instead of massive restriction I've introduced. Car really doesn't sound like a LS. It's quite strange. Pulled a bit of fuel out up top. This does potentially explain why my spark plugs looked like the car was running pretty over-rich. If I was tuning it to a ~12.7 which in reality was far richer than that in the past. It will be handy to have the dyno WB to compare my WB to to compare notes that's for sure. At this point I'm happy to just sit in the passenger seat and tune the thing given I've got about 7 million hours on the platform lol.
    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.

    • sensible choice....and all 32s should be in yellow
    • Run it in open loop for now, and drop the frequency down. This lowers the resolution and requires more duty cycle to do anything, however good to troubleshoot.
