No longer turbo technics at cardiff

Owner sold up.

Wow, you learn something new everyday...

I'd heard a few good things about them. When did they close?

Seems like everyone in Newy is closing shop. Guess it's down to Sydney for a tune then...

I've heard Paul @ Hunter Thomas does a mean road tune. No personal experience though.

Yeh i heard this too. But i kinda wanna get it dynoed. Actually wanna see the printout of how well its runnin etc. power/torque afm etc etc....

one thing newcastle needs is a tuner, from what ive heard they would make a killing

not correct...everyone in Newcastle that has set up a tuning shop has gone broke. There is simply not the money to be made in newcastle...its a sad fact but true. I had the opportunity to set up a workshop that would have expanded my engine building to include a showroom and dyno with a very respected tuner willing to come on board but im not willing to suffer the same fate as everyone else who has tried this. Ill just keep building my own engines and helping a few people out with theirs as a spare time hobby only.

This is so true. Quite sad really!... Having ur own dyno an showroom would of been awesome!! I guess untill newcastle gets more imports (or like of) on the scene we will just have to travel elsewhere for a dyno tune. Although i have been seein many more around town so hopefully soon we can have a tuner that can stay an survive, imo

no...lol

I fly Mark Jacobsen (Godzilla Motorsport) down for tuning when required. Ive tried to organise other cars to be tuned by him while he's down here (we use the latest generation Mainline 4WD dyno) only to have either very little interest or cars not turn up.

I feel in my own experience that road tuning has its own benefit's over dyno tuning but I will say that having 4 or 5 hours on a dyno to do the wot runs is alot safer then on the road.

I second paul at Hunter Thomas.

I have done many road tunes and never seen what output they have on a dyno but just from the seat in the pants feel, well I can say that it is impressive with positive response's from the owner's of the vehicle's.

One day I will get to know how to do dyno work one day lol

Cam84

Why dont you rebuild it yourself and save a crap load of cash?

I rebuilt my 25 with all the machining work done by Pryce Engine's. He is willing to help you out with any info you require and does reliable work. I spend a decent amount with him and all the work was spot on.

ive had both experience with Sato and Paul Thomas from hunter thomas... both super nice guys, both very capable of performing road tunes with great results... id have no quarms about taking any of my cars to either of them.

Paul Thomas can do dyno tunes, he dislikes all the dynos in newcastle so he takes the car to sydney (doesnt cost extra) and uses a friend of his down there... racepace or something like that. he has done that to a few people i know and have great results.. he is very methodical and extracts the most from your mods without going over board.

having said that... whats wrong with road tunes.... i drive all my cars on the road, never on a dyno, so why do i want a dyno tune??

i will happily put my recomendation to either of these guys.

cheers

Linton

I dont feel there is anything 'wrong' wit a road tune. Its more the fact you can get a printout of exact readings/results off a dyno. Always thought sitting still and reading off a laptop whilst the car is not moving would be alot easier, rather then the car flogging down the street. IMO of course.

I used to think that road tuning was the way to go, then after a little while of dyno tuning i started to realise the difference between road tuning and dyno tuning.

Every setup is different, some cars need fatter mixtures to make max torque then others in low and mid range others don't make a squat of difference and you cannot tell this from road tuning sure the seat of the pants can help but its nothing compared to looking at the dyno's logs.

I dyno tuned a car last weekend R33 Gtst that i road tuned about 4 years ago and the max power was the same but the torque I gained and low end and mid range power increase shocked me, we are talking up too 100nm of torque in the low end to mid end and 50kw of power before 3500rpm, the mixtures / timing was tuned using torque graph's and I was able to get the car going heaps better then it was before, so I compared the graph's to another R33 with similar mods I tuned a year ago on the same dyno and they were pretty similar.

I honestly think that road tuning is good when you have no Dyno available but to get the best out of a car you cannot beat a decent Dyno tuner for the job!

If you are after any Dyno work at the moment then you should give Hunter All Wheel Dyno a call, Wayne is a good tuner who will be able to sort you out.

So true ^^^^

I have emailed Wayne and am waiting a reply.... Thanks for the input, im surprised i havent heard of Hunter before... sounds promising...

Is there where you tune yours?...

Yes Anthony tunes at Hunter All Wheel Dyno, latest generation Mainline AWD dyno. This is who i use (Anthony) and where i do my pump fuel tune for my car.

Hey guys. I know this is an old thread but thought that i would reply as it has alot of the info that i was searching for, and i see that alot of you blokes posting in it are local too me.

So, is the mob "Hunter all wheel dyno" the goods? I am so keen to get my Stagea on a dyno and get my boost controller sorted out as the best that i can get is 7PSI. I do not know how to adlust the Blitz boost controller :P

Currently the car "feels" like its got 400+bhp but i know it has got a heap more in it yet. I aint interested in tuning it on the road. That'd have to be the quickest way to jail. i.e. Killing someone or a huge speeding fine.

Also I am keen to find out who you guys use to service and modify your vehicles. So far the best I can find is "Larry, Moe, and Curly" at the Toy Shop Imports at Beresfield. I find them very unprofesional and they lack customer sevice.

Thanks in advance guys. Look forward to meeting you all one day!

ok for starters the toy shop is your only hope for parts in newie area bit pricey but they will negotiate if you know what your after and what its worth, never had problem with larry moe or curly lol, ive bought quite a few parts from there at reasonable prices ...and i don't think you will get anything done there as they are importers of cars and parts basically wreackers for jap imports.

ADNUM automotive is hunter dyno may be worth looking into them they tune some reputable streetmachines If you want or need any engine work done Jack Jones engine reconditioning in lambton you'll have to pull the motor out but he's a ledgend this old bloke and a wealth of knowlage when it comes to screwing together a weapon of a motor he's the only engine builder i will recomend. For tunes and other modds

PBE DYNO TECH there at sandgate in newcastle, ive had work done there they'll do anything and if they cant they'll track down someone who can they're a good bunch of blokes and cheap labour.

JOHN COLLINS DYNO he's at broadmedow and i recomend and say john and nathan would be one of the best atm in newie, his son had turbonetics at cardiff when it was open so i believe.

SKAZZAS DYNO at cardiff only been told of him,

TRG AUTOMOTIVE in cardiff i know people who have had all sorts of modds done here with no complaints. and BLACK TRACK PERFORMANCE but use them as a last last resort never been there but i know people who have and they have been happy with the tunes they had done but they fkn strange that place, when you can get them to work on ya car which is hard to do they can do a good tune but they are expensive .

at the end of the day no there are bugger all tuners in newie but if you know the right people to ask for advise theres no problen at all getting a ecu reprogramed here in the newie area .

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
