brodiejayR34
Heading to Japan in November. Our schedule gets a little pressed for time when we get to Hiroshima. Has anyone been? Would be interested to find out how long others have stayed there for and how long they would have LIKED to have stayed there for. R-sanichi
First of all, any of the below recomendations may not be so good if you've traveled Japan before. I lived there for about 15 months. f*kuyama, to be exact. Are you only staying in the big city, or venturing surroundly cities? You should go to Onomichi for the famous temple on the hill - take a gondola ride up the hill through the tree tops. Tomo no ura is 20 mins bus ride directly south of f*kuyama. Its one of the oldest townships in the area, and back in Edo period was the capital for its medicinal nihonshu, you can get free taste tests at one of the shops. If its hot weather, take a ferry ride to Sensui Jima (an island 5mins out of Tomo no ura) I often went to the beach on that island during the summers, and met some friendly j-girls on numerous occaisians. In Hiroshima itself, go to a baseball game. The Hiroshima Carp are not great, but the fans are crazy. Even if you're not a baseball fan, its good entertainment. The new state-of-the-art stadium may be up and running by now. If you want to check out the war memorial and the A-bomb dome be prepared for a very emotional time (and have tissues ready). Spend at least a day there as there is a large amount of education on nuclear technology and what it does when used wrongly. You like shopping? I cant remember the names of the malls, but there are some great hondori's and the like. Enjoy the different foods in the regions anywhere in Japan. Always ask what the local specialty is, you may be surprised at the different dishes and how much they vary. So there's Okonomiyaki - Hiroshima style, Tomo no ura is famous for its Tai (bream) and nihonshu, Mihara is famous for its octopus. Anything else? Michael. Beer Baron
I have only spent a small amount of time in hiroshima, but one thing I would say is a must do if you go there is okonomura - okonmiyaki town. It is basically a building of about 5 stories of all okonomiyaki restaurants. if you like japanese food you will know okonomiyaki in japan basically can be ordered in two styles. hiroshima style or osaka style. hiroshima style kicks ass. and in hiroshima it's very good. amazingly good okonomiyaki and nice cold beer is a good combo. also, near hiroshima (maybe 30 min by train and then short ferry ride) is the islan miyajima. it's home to the floating torii and of course the floating temple behind it. they also have deer every where, lots of craft type shops, some nice 4 or 5 storey pagoda, and up the top (by sky car) there are monkeys. a nice day trip and listed as one of the 5 most beautiful sights in japan.
