Ok, heres the problem. RB20det silvertop in a 180sx, guage is reading 10psi, but doesnt feel like any boost at all, please no comments about it being a 20 as they are fine and just as good as a 25, ive had both engines and like the 20's alot.

a month or so ago, (when i bought the car) after replacing faulty coilpack, boost guage was reading 10psi, but felt slow as, checked all the usual faults, coulding find anything. then checked out turbo and there was bulk oil in dump and inlet of turbo, so put it down as the turbo being shagged, got a new stock turbo to throw on as i couldnt fine a r33 turbo to upgrade to at the time. now its doing the same thing, still got stuff all power and its reading 10psi, havnt changed the guage yet to check the guage. Although, now that i think about it, i used the same actuator from the old turbo on the new one..........

so anyway, i hooked up the wastegate to the inlet just before TB and still 10psi but slow....

The microtech is flashing error, not sure what it is as of yet, im awaiting to get time at the local shop to check it out.

any other idears i could look at, or check..

i have a compression tester, i might go do that while i await some imput. cheers thanks!

hey, thanks for the reply. Yes i have checked timing and set it to 15deg btdc..

as for vac hoses, ive replaced all of them with new hoses and they are all fine, it could be an error with the microtech im thinking, ill try test the wastegate somhow in 10mins or so..

hey sorry to thread hijack. but i think im having the same probblem?

6 months ago when i bought the car, i felt the punch wen i bootd it, but now i hear the turbo noise but dont really feel as though im going anywhere?

i dont know much about cars so any help would be nice.

what are things i can easily look for?

as far as i know

check for smoke when booting it, could have blown turbo seal...

check for vac leaks, although if you had vac leaks it wouldnt be reading whatever your full boost is

wastegate must be working if its reading to boost level

swap out your boost guage to make sure its working ok

check out your cat converter? and make sure its not blocked etc..

turn your boost controller right down and see if it changes the reading on the guage, if it does then id say ya turbo is stuffed.. if it doesnt, then your guage is buggerd maybe

same as mine when i first got it i felt the push back in ur seat but know nothin but stills says 10 psi

if the microguess is flashing error codes at you...well...that is the problem...get that fixed

Ok.

instead of looking for boost leaks etc.

Think about this -

The car starts running like crap, the thing that runs the show (Microtech) starts flashing the error light.

I wonder what the problem could be?

My advise, Stop thrashing the car untill you can sort out what the issue with the microtech is.

Its your stock ecu .Mine felt really good at first when running 10 psi but after a couple of weeks the ecu did the rich & retard thing.Ended up just getting a power fc.Maybe resetting the sock ecu will help?

nope resetting doesnt help

it felt insane after fitting the fmic but then it sort died off now just doesnt push me back in my seat feels sorta non turbo lol still fast but its doesnt have the push lol still sounds like the turbo is doin its job spools fine and sounds fine

cheers, doesnt get thrased as its never driven. I'll get the tuner to check it out as soon as he can.

compression results arent that bad.. it wouldnt cause your issues tho

maybe youre getting misfire??

Have you had a look at your plug condition?

what happens if you turn the boost down?

im sure i probley am getting missfire, ive got new coilpacks on there way already. plug cond is fine, they are new. yellowish colour, which can happen from exsessive idleing etc..

i went for a burn turned down boost, and the guage is workn as the lvl was lowerd..

theres no smoke on startup.

i have standard ecu, tried a reset. workd on at the start. then started lagg. would boot it, nothin nothing then bam.

now its back to jus not much at all.

so maybe i need a new ecu? piggy back or something?

Sometimes when you reset the ECU it needs to relearn itself again....i had the same prob and after taking it easy for the 1's 500kms and then giving it a bit in the 2nd 500kms....it was fine after that.....so maybe just let it relearn itself mate

well, car is going to tuner thursday to look at what the error's are. i just went for another drive, put some grease on the wastegate shaft and it didnt get messed up at all, looks exactly the same. car boosted to 10psi, no boost controller just hooked up to inlet. so the actuator arm isnt moving but its boosting to 10psi? im pretty sure it must be another shagged turbo cause it spools loud and wastegate noose is alot louder than my old stock turbo.

    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
    • If they can dyno them, get them dyno'd, make sure they're not leaking, and if they look okay on the dyno and are performing relatively well, put them in the car.   If they're leaking oil etc, and you feel so inclined, open them up yourself and see what you can do to fix it. The main thing you're trying to do is replace the parts that perish, like seals. You're not attempting to change the valving. You might even be able to find somewhere that has the Tein parts/rebuild kit if you dig hard.
