Does anyone know if an R34 clutch is the same or compatible with the R33 one?

I am looking to buy the daikin / exedy sports organic clutch but so far I am having a hard time finding out if they make them for my car. Basically, they dont, in Oz at least.

I have been talking to Daikin Aust. all week...the only thing they can offer me off the shelf [which they think will fit] is called a Premium Duty Clutch and will cost $800 just for the parts - this doesn't include a lightened flywheel either!!!

Now if 33 and 34 are the same then I will just get the exedy sports organic clutch! I'm talking about GTT / GTST here, AFAIK 33 & 34 GTR are interchangable but not from gtr to gtst etc...

Thanks guys ;)

The only cutches that I know of that are interchangeable are the R32GTR and R33GTSt.

I can only suggest you contact www.greenline.jp

If you tell them what sort of clutch you are after, they will check with their suppliers (HKS, Trust, Nismo, OS Giken, etc) and give you a run down of what is available. They are very careful when they sell parts that they are compatible. They didnt want to sell me a Trust Type R as it was for GTR and they knew I had a GTS, until of course I explained it was being custom fitted.

Also, you will probably end up with a better quality clutch at a competitive price.

Nismo.. i have a Excedy.. not sure exactly what type, but it most likely is the sports organic one. While its fairly nice, it doesn't instill great confidence and i have a feeling if i add more power it may pack itself in fairly prematurely (it was installed about 20,000km ago). The thrust bearing is already quite "clunky"

If you have the money go for a twin plate, especially if you want to go over 200rwkw. Depends of course whether you plan on further power for your car or not.

Thanks guys :(

Pred: I am checking out a dump/front pipe as we speak :) this could push me up to around 190rwkw at a guess based on current power of 180ish on the standard front exhaust section and cat... Performance wise, I won't be doing much else for a while...if at all! I only read good reports about the Exedy in other threads so thanks for the warning.

I don't think I want a twin plate as I have heard they are far from stock in terms of driveability user-friendliness. I have heard that multi plate, brass and ceramic types are ALL either ON or OFF in their operation. I would prefer just a stronger version of what I already have - which I believe is the factory spec clutch, but not 100% certain.

I test drove a twin / triple plate 34 GTT a few weeks ago and I didnt like it, very heavy pedal and very easy to stall - my car is a daily driver with the 1 or 2 time-a-year circuit / drag run...

Steve: I will send a query off to greenline, thanks. There still doesn't seem to be much knowledge in Melb / Oz [auto industry] for the 34s...

I guess though the Excedy is pretty nice to drive, and does behave like a normal clutch and grips very nicely when you tramp it.

I guess because i drive mine every day, it takes a bit of punishment in start-stop traffic and i probably do ride the clutch a little which would wear it out quicker.. Unfortunately, in start-stop peak hour-traffic its a bit unavoidable .

So maybe that would actually be a good choice if you can get one for the 34.

Hmm, well I have also heard that they arent all that great, but each to their own.

I can tell you that either a ceramic clutch (also not recommended due to fatigue after about 6 months with just over 200rwkw) or a twin plate (highly recommended) do NOT have on/off operation. You can slip a twin plate better than a stock one or a ceramic. Yes they are a bit heavier, but you get used to it very quickly.

I havent heard too many people that own twin plates bitch about them, I have only heard praise, and I love mine too.

    • That looks good, but I think you're going to need much beefier side skirts now.
    • They are daft and there's a reason it never caught on. Steering feel? We don't need no stinking steering feel!
    • I gotta pull you up on this. It's driving me crazy. A shutter is something that closes, like over a window or in a cmera. The word you want is shudder. That LSD is clearly f**ked. Take it to a diff shop and get it disassembled and examined by an expert. YOu might have plates welded together or something equally crazy.
    • Define "starting to fail". Wy not just rebuild them?
    • Check the Nistune doco. There are a few assumptions being made here that might not be valid. I will list the things that occur to me: Base map. Base map for what? Base map for Z32? Then the cranking pulse width is probably wrong for an RB25. The extra 500cc of capacity might well be enough to prevent it from catching. Base map for RB25? I don't think you can load one of those into a Z32. You have to just make the settings correct for an RB25 in the Z32 base map. That is either K or the TIM to get the pulsewidth right. Loom. You bought a loom for an RB. And you plugged it into a Z32 ECU. Did you make sure that any iwre differences were swapped. From memory, there's at least a couple. And as per the others, I would suggest making sure that the fuel pressure is correct while cranking and that the injectors are actually flowing as expected. They really must come out and go on the bench, unless you do find that you have messed up as per above points. I would also suggest watching in Nistune to make sure that everything is reading correctly. That the correct binary flags are raised at the right time (like the crank signal), that there's no stupid values in K or TIM. That you have not got mismatched firmware for the ECU and/or a wrong image loaded.
