Hey guys,

I bought this car from a member about a month ago, and up until yesterday it ran perfectly fine.

I noticed the first problem yesterday when I drove it in the morning, just a single loss of all power for about 1/4 of a second. It didn't do it again, so I figured it wasn't anything bad.

Then today, after filling it with a full tank of BP Ultimate, I drove it about 10km to a new self car wash. I washed only the body (bonnet down) then coming home down the free way I noticed that between 2.5k - 3.5k revs the power was alot less than normal.

About 5km from home it started spluttering and misfiring and blowing black smoke. I pulled over, let it cool and tried driving it again. This time it would drive like normal at low rpm when there was about -0.5bar of boost, but as soon as I accelerated a little more and the turbo started to spool the power would cut out and it would run very sluggish again.

I limped the car to just around the corner from my house and it wouldn't even pull itself with the engine idling.

The car would rev fine (but surge while idling) in neutral or with the clutch in, but as soon as I engaged the cluth and began to rev, the car would clonk out.

The problem would temporary subside when car was left to cool for 30 mins but it would still run very rough, though I only drove it around my property, so I didn't just a chance to test the engine under boost.

I've read similar problems on here and thought it could be one or more of many things:

Bad fuel,

Bad AFM,

Bad o2 sensor (wouldn't cause problems this bad would it?)

Some gasket or seal?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

check your cooler pipes for splits

As in radiator pipes?

I should also mention, the car has a front mounted intercooler and a pod air filter in its own little box. Which is fairly common apparently.

It wont be the O2 sensor as this does nothing on exceleration so you can rule that out.

You should look at all intercooler hoses and any vacum lines in the engine bay to ensure they are sealing and there is no leak. for instance a loose intercooler pipe would display the symptons you are describing though it is a bit strange it is intermitent but you never now it could only be occuring once it gets hotter.

Try cleaning the AFM this can cause the the symptons also but in the casses i have seen it affects idle too. You can test if its the AFM by disconecting it when the car is idling to see if the idle changes at all and becomes smoother but if it is idling fine this test wont help.

Also the other very commen problem is coil packs on my R33 they pretty much shat themselves almost instantly till the point where like you said it wont even move on idle.

If you try searching there is plenty of problems like theses that might help you diagnose the problem like plug gaps etc also is your car standard?

post up a pic of your front mount cooler set up !

also i recently had the same problem and it ended up being my coilpacks

could also be a split in your cooling pipeing if your cas is spooling but not boosting

These is the cooling pro front mount from just jap i had on my 33 the one on my 34 is a greddy.

and the 2nd photo is the one we installed on my mates 34 came out pretty good i think.

I have the 'EXACT SAME PROBLEM'

although, i've checking my intercooler piping and all seems to be ok...

its an rb20det with a r33 stock turbo on it (not sure if its been tuned to have this turbo on it - could this be the problem???)

this problem is driving me insane

thanks in advance

if its misfiring at and there is some black smoke your plugs can be fouled..... replace them with some BCPR7ES gapped to 0.8

its a good place to start, and you probably need to change them anyway

Nah they have recently been changed. I think it might possibly be the cooler piping. Seems to just lose all power like there is a leak somewhere. I'll have another look..

Thanks.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but just for anyone else having the same problem; it was just a hose clamp that was too big for the intercooler pipe. Refitted the pipes, smaller clamp and hasn't popped off again since.

    • Will have a look at that. I cant see any leaks
    • Put another overflow bottle (ie, a 1.25 coke bottle or similar) under the overflow hose and see if it is being pushed out there or if it is disappearing into the engine.
    • Staring on a stand is no issue. You just have to wire everything up, give it fuel and cross your fingers that the stand is robust enough. Arranging the inlet plumbing is often the hardest part, without any surrounding structure to hand some of it from. No need for coolant if you only want to run it for <1 minute. As to the gearbox - I think the little Aisin box is a bit stronger than the other small Nissan boxes that went behind SRs, but I wouldn't be too keen to test its limits with the torque of a boosted 25. I don't know if you can retain the box and the tailshaft. The box won't connect to the RB without an adapter of some sort, which is either a plate that will push the engine forward (which is not good for fitting it into the bay's available space) or push the box back, which messes with the box position and tailshaft length - OR - cut and shut work on the bellhousing, which is a long way from "least modification". I'd be buying a new 370Z 6 speed or similar, doing what has to be done to that to make it fit RB (ie, cut and shut bellhousing) and the requisite tailshaft custom/mods.
    • Hi Everyone I am from West Pennant Hills in NSW. Been too busy until recently to attend to my RB25DET Series 2 engine until recently. I am planning to stick it into the S15 shell at this stage, unless a nice SR20DET turns up... For now, i am going to try and get the RB25 running and working well then decide what gearbox to use. My preference is to retain the SR20DET  6 speed gearbox and tail shaft to retain as much and least modifications as i can avoid. I am an old guy and won't be doing any heavy drifting so i don't need a bullet proof gearbox Does anyone have experience with starting the RB on a stand? I got everything setup as much as I can with the info i can find... endless searching and videos on Youtube I would be great to get some pointers Cheers Songo
    • Hey all, Recently have had my s1 r33 gtr serviced and noticed my coolant reservoir was topped up to the max line. Took the car out for 1 yesterday and noticed today the reservoir is completely empty.  Any ideas? Radiator is full
