Can anyone give me some pointers on how to replace the cams etc back into the head of my RB20DET?

I sent it away to get planed/crack tested and cleaned, and when I got it back they'd taken the cams and all the associated parts/bolts/clamps etc out and put them in boxes.

How do I replace it all?

Is there a guide somewhere or a pic I can look at?

In the box there are little arch shaped things, lots of bolts/screws, round cylinder shaped things and some cam covers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't put the head back on the block until I have done this :P

Cheers :headspin:

Ummmm, yes. Unless you want to destroy an engine unless you have done it b4. Being a fitter (person who removes and installs components) like me :P and has a rough idea how it works, is far from being a qualified person, who knows what goes where, why, what it does, and how it affects other parts.

I'd leave it if your just a fitter....

hahahah mate I'm not even a fitter ..

I work in finance not in mechanics :):D

ahh well guess I'll take it to a mate tonight who does that sort of stuff. I just wanted to see if it was possible for me to do it myself instead of having to cart all the gear over to his house.

Cheers for the help though! :P

Yeah I know that's what I thought!

I thought if I gave it to them with the cams in, then I would expect to get it back with the cams in! And cleaned and tested and all the other stuff they said they would do.

Ahh well this mate of mine knows his stuff, and his mates have some pretty hi-po cars here in Perth so they're going to help me tonight :D

Cheers for your help tho fellas :)

just make sure u bolt it down evenly and dont put too much tension on the cam itself

so go over it about 4-5 times and slowly tighten it up, camshafts arent as strong as u would think

The torque spec is only about 1 kg/m (that's slightly more than finger-tight), so unless you have a torque wrench for it, I'd leave it to a pro.

I still reckon it should not have even been taken home until they put it back together. (same as taking your car in for new tyres, and they just hand you back a rim with new tyre and tell you to fit it yourself - it's just not on (pardon the pun)).

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
