Hi, just though I better say hello to all here, I am from Sydney & have just purchased my first turbo charged car, I am 35yo (I know, I know, I am going through a mid life crisis), anyway, I just purchased a rough as guts gunmetal grey (1994) GTR R32, a little worse for wear, but I will be spending some money on it to get it looking smik again. As a teenager, I loved these cars, but who could afford one then in 1990's, I have also got a 2008 VE SSV that I could not leave alone, I did the cam, exhaust, computer, CA intake, clutch & valve springs to produce on the dyno 332rwkw (449rwhp), the people that did the work say it should do somewhere in the 11's, who knows, havent had it at the creek yet. Back to the Skyline, I saw it in the papers & thought, man I still really like the looks of the original Godzila, so i rang the bloke up & asked him about it, I told him I had VE commodore with 332rwkw, he said the Skyline would beat it, I said I don't believe him, anyway, I went & had a look at it, it was really in bad nick, but anyway I took it for a drive, (remember! I have never driven an turbo charged car), it felt like riding a YZ 250 2 stroke trail bike with power band, I just fell in love with the turbo kicking in at around 3500 revs, what fun it was, it was more fun than driving the commy, I am not sure still weather the GTR would beat the SS, but it certainly would come close, needles to say, I bought it on the spot & am now facinated in Skylines, I have caught the disease & I want to fix the beast up, I like cars to be original, so i will be leaving the exterior factory, other than some nice rims, any Ideas on rim size? as I have no idea what fits & what dosent, my commy has 22's, I was told that 20's look good on the R32's.

Anyway, thanks for letting me swear here (V8, commodore) & I would love to here some suggestions on wheel size, engine upgrades & how/where I can get interior bits & pieces to replace worn out & tired parts. The seats are good, other than the drivers seat which is ripped & I want a replacement one, the leather boots around the gear stick & handbreak are also in need of replacing. I would like to spend around $10,000 on the engine, where in Sydney would i go get some more horse power or rebuild done, who is the Gurru of the RB26, thanks to you all for your suggestions in advance.

Regards Denis

Hi Denis,

Being in Sydney, Just Jap might be a great place to visit since they're one of the places that imports half-cuts and thus, they have interior & exterior mods that can whet your appetite. Situated at 101 Bath rd Kirrawee, Ph 95450532 [email protected] or www.justjap.com Their prices are very reasonable, and safe to leave a deposit there with Darron, Steve, Tim, Tony etc.

www.powerplayimports.com is another good resource but it's best to see if your part is onsite and then pick it up. A bit pricier, but they know all the ins and outs of your car too. Best not to leave a deposit at this one. Ph 98197555

[email protected] is another at 5/11 Packard Ave Castle Hill Ph 98999962 Talk to Mark. Deposits are safe here.

Welcome to SAU & since you seem to be mechanically minded, I'm sure that besides searching for info, you'll be able to offer some good points too.

IMHO, I think 18" wheels are as high as I'd go for an R32 GT-R.

Cheers from an old-timer

Thanks Terry, I sure will help out once I learn a bit about the skylines, I know alot about the new gen4 & ls3 Chev engines, but know little at the moment about the RB26, but I am learning as we speak. Thanks for the links, I'll check em out.

Denis

Welcome to the family!

Sounds like a great project! Got any pics of the sexy old girl? Would love to see a few. :)

For rims, i'd go 18's. Its the happy medium between looks and performance.

On a side note - yeah, its true - holdens are catching up, but it only took them around 12 years!

Hey, what a friggen unbelievable car you have there, how the hell do you manage to part with it, I have only owned the r32 now for a day & a half & am already in love with it, & it is in crap condish too. No worries on the photo's, i'll take some tomorrow during the day, but here are some that i just took now, note: it's night time 10:00pm now.

I just wanted to show you the state of this poor car, the bloke gutter ground each & every wheel, even the drivers side, I may get some money for them from my local metal recyclers. hey, & by the way, I may spot you one of these days, I live in Bella Vista.

Just another thing, I have been told by many that the original GTR air intakes were better than any aftermarket intakes, sorry but I can't call them "cold" air intakes, as they don't suck cold air, or at least i can't see how they do.

Haha, wheels look like they'd been done on purpose to create an image of a lip :)

RB26 is the beast forever and ever :P

Did you get a mod list as to what has been done to it? Cosmetics with 32's are fairly common now as they are getting on a bit, but on the upside theres many a wreck and parts are pretty freely available. The for sale section on parts and accessories should be a great source for those bits but for the performance stuff, I'd vote JustJap too.

Also I'd bet thats a pretty sight with a big V8 and a 2.6L TT side by side in your garage :)

Welcome to the world of skylines!

Hey you goen mate, it's pretty much stock other than an apexi exhaust, apexi boost controller, apexi air pod intakes, but like I said, I can't see how they have any performance enhancement capability, i went through 3 types of cold air intakes on the commodore & 3 times on the dyno for the official figures, all were real cold air intakes, we even tilted the radiator back to get as much cold air in as possible,

Hey Denis,

Cheers for the kind words! To answer your question, i'm not sure how i'll manage. Probably poorly, until the next project comes along! :) haha

Thanks for the pics - your car looks like a whole lot of fun! Yeah, a spotting is due! I'm not far away from Bella Vista and run through there quite a bit. :)

In regards to the pods, I used to have HKS ones on my car - they sounded unbelievable but didnt filter as well as Apexis or look too attractive - they were big green mushroom ones. I now have apexi ones on there aswell. They dont suck as loud but you hear more spool and they look sexy. I'd stick to the Apexi filters if I were you as they apparently filter the best. Either way, i wouldnt expect an increase in power with them.

If your going to go to Hills Motorsports (which is probably easiest for you as your a local!) speak to either Mark or James and say Chris with the Silver R33 GTR recommended you. They're both top guys and will definately look after you.

That poor 32 is high like it's on crack :) Hopefully it doesn't cost you much to fix up. For a comparrison the commie i ran a 12.1 in my r32 gtr at my first time at the drags and only 3 runs :) i had only owned the car for 2 weeks aswell lol so i am guessing i could break an 11, that was with 300rwkw. Not sure you would break into the 11's with your commie on street tyres though, slicks you should be able to do it

Hey Denis. Good to hear I'm not the only one having this crisis. I'm 34 and I bought my first r32 gtr 2 weeks ago. I too have a v8 ute that i'm now selling. Also trying to keep my car pretty standard although once you start tinkering about with these cars its hard to stop. Quite easy to spend money on these cars especially being a member on this forum. I managed to buy a new set of Turbo's yesterday off another member so my car is currently sat in my garage with the turbo's removed waiting for new gaskets so I can install the new turbo's. Any way hope you have fun with your new car.

Regards Paul.

Good morning! thanks fella's, jesus, I kept dreaming of the GTR lastnight, it seams I have reverted back to being in my teens, I am obsessed, & like I said before, it's a piece of crap at the moment. Anyway, i'll check out Hills Motorsports today & the rest later on.

@Paul, I wont be selling the commodore because my wife is friggen obsessed with it, not for long though, she has 2 points left on her licence.

@Chris, Thanks mate, i'll give your name a work out with those guys at Hills Motorsport this morning.

@topher, she is high, but I recon I am higher on her at the moment, I just can't believe how much fun turbo cars can be.

Here are some daylight photos of her, I have even included some of the commy as well, shit I just swore again.

Ah, forgot to ask, what's the norm on lowering these things, pedders, kings etc, how much is too much, as you can see, the commodore sits nice, I think a similar height is warranted.

I am going Nissan shoping now.

You got the bug lol! Had mine over 5 years now! Spent way too much and haven't resprayed it yet (needs it).

I put in some new Tein super streets, but thats when they were $1800, and whiteline adjustable sway bars etc.

You could go anything like hks, tein buddy club whiteline, all available with height adjustment.

post-12712-1254095927_thumb.jpg

Heres mine.

They look sweet at this height and still handle well.

The only thing you don't get with these is the low down torque and that tough v8 bellow!

Good luck with the beast!!

welcome m8 to Nissan central lol. For your engine upgrades head to croydon racing developments Jim knows his stuff plus built some of the toughest GTR`S around He a bit of a guru with the RB26s. My suggestion is Have a look at the work or volk rims CN28s Volk or Work XD9s there my favs for gtrs they look tough 9.5 or 10.5'' allround. Anyways m8 goodluck with it all. ;)

Hey Terry,

Is that the same hills motorsports that used to be in the same complex as Unique autosports old location?

Which car gets the garage now? :D

Well, as you can see, the GTR is parked on the grass in front of the house as close as I can get it to my bed, I have even changed sleeping sides with my wife so as I can be that extra bit closer, but "her" commodore still gets the garage, you see how obsessed I am, anyway, spoke to the Mark dude from Hills Motorsports (thanks Chris, I metioned your name, & he said your a good bloke), it sounds as if the sky (money) is the limit with these engines, but I have spoke to the boys that built my commodore engine, yeah they almost fell over when i turned up in the GTR, but anyway, they had a VL there that had a 3 litre in it, with an RB26 head on it, it seems that the head of the RB26 fits on the commodore VL (Nissan) motor, I was just thinking, rather than buy a stroker 2.8 litre crank for the RB26, I would purchase an VL or R31 3 litre motor & it should haul ass, what do you guys think.

Denis

Edit: Hey Sean, what type & size are your rims, they really look good on your Skyline, which is realy nice by the way.

@ blitzxtr, I intend on doing a bit of research before I make up my mind on who is doing the engine work for me, since I am prepared to spend a lot of money, I want to make sure the thing goes, but at the same time, stays together, i'll give croydon racing developments a bell & see if I can catch up with them, thanks for the advice.

I just found out that rims are realy hard to come by for the GTR, something to do with the X factor, (brake caliper clearance to rim) or are the wheel places I visited today just lazzy to show me stuff they might have to order in, they would rather sell me crap looking wheels that they have in stock, which was only 2 or 3 different types to suit my car.

Edited by den15b

Wheels and choice...tell me about it.

Mine are 18x10 inch all round, rays nismo's with 265 35 tyres. Same wheels as on the R33GTR 400R.

Good luck with the project, there's a lot of useful info on this site!

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
    • Are you 100% sure this isn't tune related?
    • 140-150 across the board. At this point hoping the grounding harness fixes it. My grounds are all tied to the chassis and none to the battery. For SR and KA that’s never been a problem for me but had a few other guys here and Reddit who told me RB really like a very solid ground setup tied to the battery so going to try that next, I’m stumped if that doesn’t do it. Never had a car have spark and fuel and not fire off before. Only thing I can think is the spark is intermittent/weak because of grounds nothing else really makes sense at this point
    • I am having close to the same issue. Can you help me with what wire you grounded to get your pump to trigger?
