Apparently people were saying that almost all after market cam gears have weak teeth and crack easy. So I guess that would be a con. Also why spend 300 to buy them about 100 to install to get 3/4kw - 400 bux = new coil packs which you'll most likely need sooner rather than later

"apparently"...what people???

Sorry mate, but I've never heard anyone on this forum or in real life say that, early HKS not withstanding. As for the pros and cons, the use of cam gears is part of the whole upgrade. They provide the Tuner with more scope for adjustment of the separation or overlap of the cams for better response or out right power.

There was a pic of absolutely worn out teeth on a pair HKS cam gears from a busted 2J that was doing the rounds on the interweb about 4-5 years ago. That gave rise to the myth (or not a myth - whatever). Something to do with a weaker form of alloy used in the construction of them.

There was also a story about them from the same era about not have enough locating on them, leading to slippage.

How much of this is true i don't know, just sharing the rumours of a few years back.

I've actually seen a motor (RB25 IIRC) that ate all of it's valves on the exhaust side. The "adjustment" was all the way to one side. The shop guy surmised that either the adjustment slipped and ate all the valves, or when it ate the valves for what ever reason, it forced the adjustment all the way to one side. Either way, the 3 bolts holding the adjustment in place slipped and it didn't seem like there was enough clamping force there. I run HKS gears, but I'd prefer something else just for peace of mind.
