hey i bought a turbo of my mates a while ago and now its on my car here is the specs of what i know!

standard rb25 front housing "high flowed"

with garret gt30 front wheel

ar.63 rear housing...

and i have the stock rb25det turbo aswell sitting here.

i want to get my power fc tuned sometime soon and i dont know what to have on there...

here is the deal the other day i gave my car a bit and white smoke came out the exhaust "with the high flowed turbo"

was told by justjap it would be the turbo seals or w.e. cause if it was stems it would be smokey on idle.

and it doesnt blow smoke at all while driving, But on that day when i dragged 3rd gear right out 6000rpm the oil came out. then drove again 5min later and its normal

and has been since.

anyways

i was thinking i want to have the most power i can but i dont want to put the highflow turbo on if the seals are gonna go on me

so how much power do u think i would be making on this setup:

Apexi Pfc w/Hc

Turbosmart Dual Boost Controller

JustJap FMIC

Sard FPR

Bosch 040 Fuel pump

Z32 AFM

Xforce varex cannon - piping - highflow cat 3"

i dont want to kill the stock turbo "but i do want as much power as possible" i would use it untill i saved up for something bigger, say around feburary next year!

investigate why the oil pressure light came on

this is a last resort failure light that will come on when pressure is too high or too low

i would be checking all engine mechanics and speaking to a workshop

if the pressure is outside the engine's range given at 6000rpm it would be enough to shag the motor no worries

check basics

check oil level

check oil filter

replace oil filter

replace oil

check oil cooler for issues (if you have one)

look for oil looks

go see a mechanic

forget power, fix and check the oil pressure issue

it could be sender is dead, but usually that affects the stock pressure guage

the idiot light is failsafe backup method so if this comes on, its probably correct

i dont think it was a pressure problem though i will get it looked at by someone incase.

i think the turbo seals are just on the way out

i did find an oil leak on top of the turbo "the centre of my turbo isnt standard" where the nipple goes into the turbo for the braided hose connects to.

i fixed that and thats not a problem now, just them turbo seals...

the high flow has a bit of shaft play aswell so maybe i should just scrap that turbo...

how much would it be to repair the high flow oil seals "maybe bearings" and fix any other gaskets or w.e. so its in 100% working order?

do u think the high flow i have would allow much more power then the stock turbo, or is it not worth the hassle

cause if not ill just put the stocky on and save for a bigger 1!

i had the seals changed, new compressor wheel fitted and balanced and another rear housing machined (old one had big cracks in it) on my highflow and it cost me about 800 bux. to change the seals would only be a couple of hundred bux but i would get it balance again. worth doing if you want to keep the highflow. i got about 250rwkw out of the highflow at 15psi, yes it is worth it

i rang GCG turbo's or w.e. they are called, and they giggled when i said should i get around $800 or so saved before bringing it to u...

so obviously he wants to charge me an arm and a leg for it.

all i want done is new seals and i want to try and get rid of the shaft play...

do u think that would be expensive at all? if not could u give me some contact details of someone in nsw that would give me a good deal

as i dont know anyone who does turbo repairs and i wouldnt know a good price from a bad one.

my mate told me with that turbo he ran 265rwkw with the turbo and he used it for drifting so im worried something might shit itself.

the blades look perfect and so does the housing.

I Just tested mine today. With .63 rear and 76mm comp. managed 273rwkws with a pretty poor conditioned engine. probably be picking up another 15KWs if engine had better compression. But if you are going for bigger power you need to put that setup in a .82 housing.

If you want it high flowed with steel wheels we can do it for $880 + GST but you need to send it to Melbourne. Or try your local MTQs.

hoo in this case assume shaft and housings are ok to re-use. We normally charge $440 for a set of Garrett 360 degrees bearing kit fitted and balanced. You still need to send turbo in to do that thou.

so do u work at a shop or own a shop that woould repair my turbo?

where is it located and how long would u need it for.

what price would i be looking at max "roughly" cause i know it needs oil seals and prob new bearings.

an i take it the bearings would fix the shaft play...?

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... HTH

    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily. 
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
