I was wondering has anyone managed to add in a cold air pipe for their pod's with stock intercooler? I looked everywhere and couldn't find any place to fit down a cold pipe.

Here's a pic of my pod. If someone can indicate where abouts they have fitted a cold air pipe that would be great :D

Also, has anyone created a template for their heatshield partition? i am in the middle process of drawing one up but if you can post a pic of your template so i can goto a aluminum place to get it cut out would be less work ;)

cheers

Here's a link to the one that I've made up.

Heaps of people have used it and are happy with it.

Also, do a search, there is a massive thread on this subject in which all the info you need is in it together with heaps of pictures of other peoples cold air boxes.

Ah, here's yet another advantage of the front facing plenum mod :D With the front facing plenum you free up a hole under the air box which was previously used by the old intercooler piping, which you can then run your piping down. You can also free up the hole by re-routing your FMIC up and over the radiator instead of through the old pipes.

If you've still got the stock intercooler, or a front mount coming back through the factory piping, then you pretty much have to cut another hole in the same area. Personally, I would do one of the other mods first and then just re-use the old hole, rather than cutting a new one. But people have cut the extra hole with success.

Aluminium DOES conduct and absorb heat, and rather well. What do you think the heat sink on your CPU is made of? :D Aluminium actually conducts heat better than steel or iron.

(note: I know that some heat sinks are copper or other fancy materials. I'm just playing the odds here. My heat sink is copper :))

Edit: Of all the piping in your intake system, I'd say that the one going to the air box (if you have one) is the one least likely to be affected by heat soak. So you could get away with exposed aluminium there. Hell, I even have exposed aluminium on my intercooler piping and it doesn't seem to worry anything. But PVC is a lot easier to cut and work with, and cheaper. For something you can't really see from the engine bay, PVC is probably going to be a better option.

oppps :)

ok, anyway i have finish drawing up the partition and will head down to my local aluminum place to get it cut out. if it doesn't fit i'll use yours Jay95R33.

@Jay95R33 : so there's 3 plates off your template? bottom of pod, top of pod and 1 on the side?

I have seen 32's with the over-the-top pipes so I would say yes :D Instead of going back along the front near the cooler, the pipe goes straight up near the washer bottle (I think you need another hole, mine did) and then over the top of the radiator, and then across the top of the engine.

The cold air tube is something I've been meaning to do for ages, I just never got around to it :)

As far as CAI goes, I didnt bother until I got an aftermarket FMIC, otherwise you have to do some terrible hacking.

But once you remove the factory intercooler, you can use the existing piping from the factory intercooler for CAI and it works and fits beautifully with absolutely no modding. Just need a box heat shield box to seal it in now.

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
