Tow behind a registered vehicle

You can tow the unregistered vehicle behind a registered vehicle. Road Rules Victoria 1999 (no. 295) apply when towing. They are:

you must safely control the towed vehicle (you can be on a probationary licence)

the brakes on the towed vehicle must be working when you are using rope, chain or wire

the maximum space between the vehicles is 4 metres (if either vehicle is a motor cycle, the maximum is 2.5 metres)

you must display a flag (minimum 30cm square) attached to the rope, chain or wire.

I just towed mine behind my old mans car to local noise tester when mine was epa'd for noise and I didn't clear it in time. Was it legal - I don't know.

Really just drove behind him with the rope there as you need the motor running to get brakes and power steering anyway.

Ring few small tow truck operators, should be able to get it done for about $50, a lot less hassle.

Also the fact it is defected means it is not allowed to be on the road beacause it is not roadworthy, i would assume that would negate the unreg rule.

I believe that if car rego is suspended then car is classed as unregistered. I would advise to contact Vic Roads and enquire with them. Possibly gettting the Unreg permit to transport car to RWC.

I am not sure about the flat towing I thought it was ok but it's hard to keep up with all the changes every month. I'm not out to hasle someone trying to do the right thing.

Last time I went to pull over a a car flat towing ended up being stolen car and apprehended 7 offenders for multiple theft of Cars. Put a stop to ALOT of stolen cars in my area. Long day as worked almost 20 hours straight dealing with it.

^ You can't get an unreg permit for a suspended car :ninja:

It's illegal, i tried that when i had a suspended rego due to EPA. The Engine # flags right off on the VicRoads system and they won't issue the permit.

Yep. Sure is. Towie Jack told me road towing - 100% illegal.

I never knew that which was interesting to know.

Tow truck or nothing.

Ash - it was illegal when I first started in the towing industry back in 1993. Looks like the laws have changed.....

I'd say a phone call to vicroads would be the best bet.

good luck with vicroads atm average wait time......20 mins(well for last 2 days anyway, but doubt it will get better before xmas now lol)....thats if they even tell you the right information. :)

id only i could invoice them for my time...

    • Tried to make 1/8npt threads into compressor house of the turbo for my EBC. Threads got fu#ked and ended up with and elongated hole, so I do have good amount and nice threads 90% of the hole but 10% I only had 1-2threads there and rest of it is flush on that side of the hole.. So my idea is to do M12 x 1.25 to AN4 with braided lines instead of 1/8npt to 4mm vacuum silicone hose.  and hopefully get a better thread. M12 is quite big and AN4 is a little bit bigger than 4mm (4.9mm inner diameter braided PTFE hose). but this should work. Thoughts? Otherwise I will weld and adapter onto the turbo.
    • Looks great, I hope everything is working well after all that time!
    • Finally back on the ground and once around the block for the first time in 2+ years
    • Ok a solution was found. I had left the factory oil temp sensor in and it was hooked up. My car never had the triple gauges.  Apparently when you delete the factory pressure and leave the temp sensor connected it triggers the oil light on the dashboard. Disconnected the temp sender, no more light.  I still haven't gotten around to look at the diagrams to figure out how/why they are tied together.
