Dunno what voltage would be on the cap you refer to (could be 100vdc plus) but if there is enough pressure there to over-ride the resistance of your skin & deliver the stored current charge (which would be fairly hefty from a 2.5 farad tank), then it is gunna hurt. A lot.

Household RCD's/earth leakage/safety switches are set to trip at 30 milliamps, very quickly (in milliseconds) so that you do not get a sustained boot & killed. No such luxury plowing around in your stereo amplifiers' innards. Like all electric shocks, even if you haven't fried yourself outright, things can get out of wack as a result.....irregular heartbeat possibly leading to heart failure at a later time & so on.

DC also has the nifty trick of causing muscles to contract so that you often cannot let go of the thing that is biting you until it says so (discharged) or some nice person comes along & throws the switch.

Avoid it like the plague, take all precautions. My 2c.

Cheers GW

If you are talking a power capacitor running on 12V it's not going to harm you, just like a 12V battery won't zap you.

Just make sure you don't have wet hands if you touch it or metal objects that could short out the terminals to each other or the chassis. Too fast a discharge at 12V is the biggest danger as it could blow up in you face literally if you aren't careful, not that I have actually heard of this happening myself.

If you want to pull this appart I suggest you find out the best way to discharge it first, & then check it with a multimeter to ensure it's safe. If you are not confident seek professional help.

nothing will happen unless your wearing something metal, but these can be used for other nasty items. but wont discuss on here.

beware they can become hot when you first charge them without the resistor, and they can spark

no idea why you asked this ??

probably best if you dont put your tongue on it 9v battery style...

which made me laugh about the time I suckered a friend with a tongue piercing to do just that with 9v battery, funniest thing ever to see a spark fly off there tongue..hahahah I'm a sick bastard but it was funny

hey guys thanks for the replys

the reason for asking is friend has one in his car with exsposed terminals 12v system and would be easy to touch by mistake.

Just wasen't sure if it was going just give him a zap or cause severe damage like blow of a finger

i play with stereo's on a dayly basis (tuning) but never had a need for any cap to be placed in the system

sorry for the lack of info in my first comment

anything metal will spark and possibly cause a fire, cover the terminals somehow

Ive been going down there on odd days after work to get it sorted.

    • I think he was only proposing to use the wire, not the sender. Simply because it runs from the right place to the right place. Personally, I wouldn't hack up the factory wiring like that. I'd just lay in the Defi loom.
    • From memory it wasn't too hard to simply see which wire ran where when you plug that in. Unfortunately also from memory the OEM sender does not use the same configuration 99.9% of gauges run. So in other words if you connect the signal wire that was running to the OEM gauge to your DEFI gauge you might find your oil reads at 200C or some other incorrect value. I remember having the same line of thought and then running new wires/senders to match the gauges I have. The pinout is available in the R34 workshop manual.
