Hi guys,

I'm thinking about buying an R34 25GT-X Turbo (4 door) in the next few months, but before I do, I have a few questions to ask that may make me reconsider it.

First up, I'm planning on swapping over my dump/front combo pipe (and possibly the catback bit too) and the HKS Type S FMIC kit from my R33 and I'm not sure if they'll be a straight swap. This will also be from an R33 coupe to an R34 4 door. Anyone know if this is possible? It should just line up as it's the same engine from what I can tell, but I just thought I'd check.

Also, I'll be selling the SAFC with my car, so will most likely buy a Power FC. I realise the computer itself is model specific so I'll buy that new, but I'm not too sure on the boost controller for it. Do I need to get an R34 25GT Turbo model (if so, I'll buy it new to avoid problems) or can I just get any old 2nd hand one off the for sale forum?

Finally, do I need to buy the hand controller for the Power FC? I will never look at it once the car is tuned, so I feel like I'd be wasting my money getting it when I don't want it. Do most tuners keep spare hand controllers to tune with? I really want to keep the stock look and feel of the car, and having controllers in the cabin annoy me. That's why I'm getting rid of the Super AFC.

Bonus questions for Japanese speakers :D:

As an alternative to the GT-X, I'm still considering an optioned up R34 25GT Turbo so I've been using Babelfish on Nissan's site to work out the differences. On this site, http://history.nissan.co.jp/SKYLINE/R34/98...EC/frame4d.html (or http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/u...EC/frame4d.html translated) about 6 lines down into the table there is something about "automatic light/write system" - does anyone know what this is?

The second bit I couldn't work out was 7th last line in the interior equipment section. It says the "Driver's seat バニティミラー" and "Suicide seat バニティミラー". Babelfish doesn't seem to know what it is.

Those are the only bits that seemed to differ between the models (apart from the Xenon lights and the stereo), so I thought I better find out if they are good things to have so I can make up my mind on which model to buy.

Thanks a lot,

Michael

Suicide Seat = Passangers Seat, Serious.

hehe yeah, I kind of guessed that, it was the "バニティミラー/???????" (depending on what browser you use) after it that babelfish couldn't do, and I was interested in. Don't know if I like the name suicide seat though :D

1. The R33 Exhaust will not fit the r34, it would need to be taken to a exhuast shop to get the hangers remade up since the r34 had them in different spots. The cat in r34 is more down the exhaust so it will be a problem. Time for a new exhuast for the r34.

2. The Intercooler should fit the r34 some mounting bolts etc might be in different places, thier shouldnt be much trouble in fitting it abit of mucking around to make sure everything is bolted nicely.

3. The power fc needs to be specific for the r34 Turbo as long as its the Rb25DET NEO u can find some on the forums but they are abit rare u can get some japan second hand from some companys. With boost controllers u can use any with the power fc u can use the optional power fc one so u can intergrate it into the hand controller if u want one to show boost etc. But other than that u can use any aftermarket ones hks, greddy etc.

4. The the hand controllers most decent dyno tuners that sell preformance parts have them and usally it is possible to use it. But if not the case i'm sure someone of the forums or around your area would have one and would be able to lend it for a day or two. Their are some nice features that he hand controller displays that might be usefull but thats up to you.

Hope it helps abit. Cheers Rob

Thanks Rob,

That's kind of annoying about the exhaust. The dump/front pipe I have is an HPC coated single piece with a separate wastegate line that I had custom made. Looks like it's time to sell it :D.

I guess I wasn't too clear on what I meant about the Power FC and boost controller. I really want to use the boost control kit option for the Power FC as I don't want any hand controllers or little blue screens in my car. I'm sure the controller shows lots of nice info, but I've got enough crap in my car now and it annoys the hell out of me.

So is the boost control kit for the Power FC a generic part, or do I have to order an R34 version of the Power FC's boost control kit to go with the R34 Power FC?

Cheers,

Michael

It is a generic part as far as i have read about. Unless someone knows otherwise. Since the boost controller just plugs into the power fc. The powerfc unit is the only thing that needs to be r34 specific because of the ecu obviously.

Also with the exhaust i;m sure if u have a decent exhuast place around they can make up an exhuast system to go with the dump/front pipe but you would have to talk to them about it & someone that knows r34 :D

Sorry to hijack the thread, michael, but have you looked at prices much for 34 4 doors? what sort of ball park?

Cheers ;)

Don't worry about the hijack - I do it all the time :). I'm looking at spending around $25000, and I've seen 1999 R34 25GT Turbos with 4 doors and auto transmission for around the $22000 mark. I'm looking for a manual, so the price will be slightly higher. Hopefully they are available for $25K-26K as nobody wants the 4 doors for some reason. I'm just happy that I'll get 2 more doors and a cheaper price. I'm going to write an email to a few of the importers (like J-Spec and Geoff Risbey) to see what they think.

Cheers,

Michael

Oh, and forgot to add: オートライトシステム= auto light system - the light switch has an additional setting: OFF/AUTO/LOW/MAIN

It just means the lights will turn on automaticallly when it gets dark...

I never would have guessed the vanity mirror! I couldn't think of one thing that a passenger had that the driver didn't. Thanks for the info. The auto light system sounds pretty damn good too. That in conjunction with the 8 speaker sound is probably enough for me to go the GT-X over the plain GT.

Thanks,

Michael

Yeah, my Dad's Lexus LS400 does that. At first I thought that it would be annoying, but then I came to feel that it was a good thing as if the sensor says it's dark, then it must be dark enough that it couldn't hurt to have more light. I quite like that it will turn them on in tunnels as then I don't have to worry about doing it myself.

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
