Just lately engine has been surging on cold start

Yesterday noticed blackish exhaust, not a lot, but different. Today it started fine, even the altenator didn't squeal, but the volume of blackish exhaust was more pronounced. On the way to the gallery it died and my wife panicked. Anyway it started again and is now fine. I'm thinking cold start valve???????

I have a copy of the "cleaning" process, so that is my first port of call.

I guess this will accelerate the fitting of the FFP>
