So i am in Melbourne. I bought my R34 GT 1998 model about 4-5 months ago. Have not had a single problem till a couple weeks ago. My engine malfunction indicator light turns on randomly while i am driving - which worried me obviously. The car sometimes lost power while accelerating and also felt like it was going to stall on red lights (semi automatic so in no way should it happen).

I took it down to Rod Hines for a check up, their scanner picked up a Primary Coil pack issue (something like Error 21).

Told me he found guys who can fix it, they were down in Clayton, called Motorware.

So i took the car to them, left it their for a day and they told me it was the secondary coil pack and it needed replacing. I left the car with them, he calls me the next day and tells me its not the coil pack its the camshaft sensor. So he went into the engine for no reason. (this still cost me $100 for labor)

But he told me it would do no harm not to change the sensor. Still drivable and wont do any form of damage to the engine.

Before i took it to any mechanics i had checked all seals, oils, valves and intake for any problems and everything is tip top.

So after i got my car back from Motorware it seemed fine, he told me it will cost $700 from dealer to replace the sensor.

This was 2-3 days ago. Today i got in my car to go to JB and on my way out, my car sounded like a WRX, heavy pounding sound coming from my exhaust in burst. BOF BOF BOF BOF BOF, when i accelerate this just gets louder but it feels VERY heavy to accel. My malfunction light now stays on 100% of the time. Bursts of heat and a bit of a burning smell come from exhaust with each BOF instead of a straight consecutive noise like normal.

So can anyone give some insight on what the hell is going on? It's really starting to bother me =[

it does sound like it is the coil packs giving out. this is a common problem however not that cheap to fix. there is a slight chance it is the crank angle sensor however 99% of the time the missfire is caused by failing coil packs.

Yep sounds like a coil pack is on the way out. mine did the same thing and i've now got splitfires which has fixed the problem. You could try changing the plugs first as its a cheaper option and may need doing anyway then if its still there you'll need new coilpacks

i had similar problems, i thought it was the plugs or the coilpacks so i got splitfires and new plugs. but it turned out to be my crank shaft sensor which caused my car to miss fire and struggling to reach 2000rpm. the mech said if the sensor is broken then it cause cause your valves to bend and screw up the internals, if i was you i get that checked out as well (error code 46)

Hmm well its strange, my light hasnt come back on since i posted this. The car hasnt been struggling. I don't know if i should get it fixed or not? I would like to believe that the car "fixed" itself, but that usually ends up badly. This is confusing =[

    • Pulled on a bit of loom under the glove box to try and cable tie it up a bit nice and heard a short somewhere behind the dash Pulled the climate control and dash out to investigate and remember I did in fact buy this car when i was younger and cannot blame the previous owner for everything Ended up finding this section of very brittle wire way up behind the centre air vents Tided up looms and removed redundant stuff (old radium harness, varex wiring, unknown crap) from past me and previous owners I found this random fuse box in my draw of electrical junk and have set it up to be a fused power with ignition source for whatever i need moving forwards While I was in the zone for wiring I also chased the reverse circuit and repaired that so the 32 has reverse lights finally though two candles may provide more light, it is still a win
