Hi

Just bought a 1993 R33 with rb25 engine, non turbo

car needs filter and full piping to fuel injection manifold. rather than pay for stock parts i want a performance filtration system

any ideas about what to put on it??

Any good performance shops in melb that will do it for reasonable price??

yes there is...its the snorkel off the front of the box.

even the very best cold air setup would be worth what 3-4hp?

its hardly worth it.

Yea the snorkel. It doesn't look like much cold air could get in between the narrow gap between the bonnet, thats why i thought an intake would be better. Thought it was there just to look good.

Filter. I'm thinking of putting in an apexi power flow, ive heard its a great filter. Any other reccommendations?

Just put a good pannell filter in the stock box, the run a 2" hose from outside the engine bay to the inlet on the stock box.

That is unless you want the fully hecktic tuner look for your NA! ! ! ! slow liner...

Ah k yea that sounds sweet. Any reccomendations on a good performance panel filter brand?

Non oil type K&N (oil messes with the air flow meter).

Most of the major brands have drop in replacment washable filters...

Just keep them clean- really clean- all the time. A fresh new filter can get you 6-8kw, a dirty new filter will robb you 10.

The Stagea guys, me included fit a cold air deflector and use an oiled Red Line or similar. I am fitting a Forward Plenum and have had to go pod. I have fitted a bend and tubing thru the OEM smic hole and the air goes directly to the pod.

Hey ol buddy... Loose the oiled filter. You allready have problems with your air flow meter-

If you must go to a pod, make up a heat shield to box it in.

The previous owner of mine put in a K&N, so i reckon it probs a good idea to get rid of this.

Btw someone told me that if you remove all those fins inside the air box you might get some more power and a bit of a whining noise.

Get a HKS mushroom pod, pop that where the factory airbox goes. Make/buy a box and give that box at least one large feed of cold air from under the car or from behind bumper, preferably two.

Will be much better than factory airbox imho. You will gain valuable kw's for an n/a engine and the engine will also rev more freely meaning increased acceleration.

I see many people saying intake is useless, factory airbox etc but it comes down to personal expectations imho. Just consider the person saying it's useless might be someone that expects at least 20rwkw from a mod or something especially if they have a FI car. I love n/a's myself and have noticed even 5wkw difference and given the chance again, would do all the mods again haha.

E.g. On my previous car (v35), alot of people say it's not worth doing intake, just stick with factory box and put in a panel filter and a smoother intake pipe.. i had that for awhile then changed to a HKS cai kit and noticed the difference easily and straight away. Two other passengers did too - Gave very different characterisics.

I've seen those articles too and i've also seen another where the HKS was rated very high (albeit poor filtration - you can see it too by holding the HKS element up against a light source).

Shortly after seeing those flow test articles, i went out and bought a couple of 3a racing pods to try out against the then installed HKS mushroom (on an FTO). To be honest, i felt the fto was better (slightly) with the HKS mushroom. An inconsistency though was that the HKS had a larger mount whereas i had to use a reducer for the 3a onto the aftermarket big pipe so that may be why the hks felt better.

Using the K&N may affect your maf.. ? I'm unsure if the pods from k&n are wet or dry (panels are wet). My old man has a couple laying around and i might try it on the line. No idea on the apexi ones though!

though on the well covered test by hot 4's (i think?) the HKS mushroom filters sucked at both filtration and flow!

The article recommended K&N, APEXi or 3A Racing (cheap arse brand)

Why would you do that?

all it does it suck in hot air which = less power

How would that suck in hot air ? The pod will be enclosed/sealed from the rest of the engine bay and then there will be at least one preferably two large pipes ramming cold air from the front/underneath of the car into that box/enclosure.

??

Edit - Also if the air is slightly hotter but the resistance to flow is much less, you should still have on road gains being the engine will rev easier but now that's really cutting it thin lol.

Hi all,

From what i have read in these threads it seems the K&N filter is not a good filter to use and the reason being is due to the filter spray which they recomend to be used on their filters. What happens if you don't use the spray and if you do only use it lightly.Do you guys think this could be a plan or would i be wasting my time, i hope not as i've just ordered a K&N panel filter and it should be here after the weekend? I have a V35 250GT. :)

    • Hello, everyone. I'm new to the forum. I have a 1989 Nissan Skyline R32 GTR. I have lost all power to the interior, including AC controls, the gauge cluster, turn signals, and windows. Stuff that still works includes the horn, brake lights, radio, and headlights. All fuses, in the interior and exterior boxes, tested good.  It starts and runs fine, just with no gauge power or anything stated above. No warning lights either. Things that I have tested: - Fusable link tested fine - No other fuses blown - Alternator good - IGN switch tested fine - With my power probe, I can backfeed power through the IGN pin to the plug on the back of the gauge cluster, and everything comes back on.    So my theory is something on the control side that sends the ignition power through the system isn't doing its job, or a wire is broken. (I would think that it is the ignition switch that would do that, but who knows?). The ignition relays don't fire (all relays tested good). So what tells them to fire other than the IGN switch?  I would really appreciate it if someone had some insight on this. I have tons of hours into this; I don't want to give up in defeat! I have the HD wiring diagram, but having all those wires laid out like that on one sheet of paper makes things pretty hard to follow.  Thanks for reading, and thanks for the replies.  Where should I look next? Thanks.
    • Install a MAP sensor pre and post throttle. Best data you could have for NA, then play with the bends and/or air box and see how much of inflection is created at WOT on the plot.
