Moving to Melbourne from NZ, need advice on my Skyline

Recommended Posts

Some pretty urgent assistance required if possible guys! I'm from Auckland, NZ, and am moving to Melbourne to live within the next few weeks, however I own a 1990 Nissan Skyline GTS Type-S that I would really rather not sell if I can avoid it, and would like to ship over at some stage if the situation permits... but I need a relative idea on how much it's going to cost me and what i'm going to have to go through if all goes ahead.. i'll give you the specs so as you can advise me, as I know nothing about Melbourne vehicle regulations so i'm not sure whether i'll have to modify the car much.

1990 Nissan Skyline GTS Type-S

2 Door Coupe

5 Speed Manual

Front Strut Brace, Standard RB20DE engine.

Professionally lowered on Tokico suspension

2 1/2" Exhaust

17" Advanti Aztecs, with 235/45 R17 Nankang tyres all-round.

Tinted windows (I actually don't know the level, it's maximum NZ Legal Limit, which is something around the 70% opacity level, i.e, 30% tint or so)

Standard Interior, full original Skyline Trim.

Heavy-Duty Clutch, and "Quick-Shifter" gearbox, although as I wasn't the one to install the box, I actually have no idea of what it is, or whether the label has any bearing whatsoever.. may well just be marketing. heh.

So any assistance would be helpful... I'm happy to pay the shipping costs, but I'm curious as to how much of it is legal on Australian roads. Since I can only sell it for around $6,000 to $8,000 here in NZ, i'd rather take it with me.

I've owned it for just on 15 months or so now, so that would be extremely helpful if what you say is fact

EDIT: I do have pictures of the car available, i just don't have the webspace to host them at present. So I can e-mail them if anyone would like to see.

Upon reflection, if I can get compliance for having owned my vehicle for 'X' months, seeing as you haven't stated anything about having to remove any of my mods, does this mean by australian standards, by my description, that it would be road-legal as it stands?

Also, does anyone have a link to where I can check up on that particular clause? or shall I stumble around and see what i can find out for now? :)

Well the height needs to be above 100mm at the lowest point. The tint is fine, as its also 30% in Australia. You should be right, as long as the tyres are in good condition, seatbelts will have to be chaged to aussie ones, child restraints will needed to be fitted - and a few minor things.

Is it a GTS as in the non-turbo? If it is, you shouldn't have much trouble getting it registered or anything. But as for market value over here, its not going to be worth much - $AUD8k or so?

By the time you price in shipping (a couple of $k ?), it may not be worth it. If it was a GTR or highly modified GTS-T then it might be worth bringing here, but otherwise, doesn't seem worth it

Ok, by what you've given me, it appears that it's legal with exception of the seatbelts... it's a factory body without even the standard Skyline bodykit, so the height is not an issue..

Yes it's the non-turbo GTS, but i also have some $2500 worth of car-audio inside, so along with the sentimental value, at this stage I do still consider it worth the trip, the tyres are near-new with a healthy wad of rubber remaining.

I don't plan on selling it straight away if I could get it over, but after having looked at a few Aussie dealers, it appears there are some R32's (factory) going around the $18000 mark??? I didn't think this seemed realistic either... As said it's not a concern as I didn't plan on an immediate sale, since I do hope to continue my project of building it up further if I can transport it. I would really regret having to sell it over here, as I don't think i'd have the patience nor motivation to make a project out of any other car, and going by what i'm used to price-wise over here, I would not wish to purchase another.

But thanks for the info predator :) if I get it over there and all goes well, i'll have to show ya :D

I think you'll find that they're all turbo for $18k though bro..

You can get a R32 GTS-T with the basic modifications over here for $13k or so.

Stereo? just take it all out man, and put it into whatever car you get here.
