Had my 03 v35 auto coupe for about a month now. Great car, and a very smooth drive :D

Picked up on noises lately that I wasn't sure about.

First is at cold crank (usually overnight). Sometimes I get a rattle/crank noise when I start. I'm guessing this is an oil pressure problem of some sort? Rare to occur, but always in the morning. Only noticed it twice in the last week.

The other noise is a ticking noise in reverse only? This isn't the infamous axle clicking problem is it? Fairly light noise, only when I engage reverse and turning into a park. Sounds like its coming from the front. It's a similar sound to CV joints failing in fwd cars (but a hell of a lot fainter)!

The third noise has been deemed normal (thank god). The one when you first take off in D and get a funny noise once you reach 20kmph.

I'll have to try and record these noises at the right moment!

The rattle crank noise you are hearing is probably the starter, the spur gear not withdrawing from the ring gear in a timely fashion, hence the noise, mine does it and I'm not concerned.

For the other noise you are hearing I have no , could possibaly be as simple as a l stone caught in your tread, but I would get it checked out to be sure.

That is due to the oil pressure not building up fast enough to tension the timing chain's hydrulic tensioner. Reason why it happens in the morning is because most of the oil drains to the bottom of the engine. It's not an issue I'd be worried about - as long as the sound dis-appears stright away - if the sound is constant you could be using incorrect oil/time for an oil change or could mean an issue with the tensioner.

You might want to check the oil grade - I think the V-Series use 5w-30 oil.

For the ticking noise, maybe is the ball bearing of the wheel cause it, mine got the same problem, and will check it on monday... the garage guys said that 10 out of 8 customers with 350z or 350GT got the same problem. not expensive to fix.

I sometimes get the startup rattle as well on my 03 V35 coupe and could be caused by the VTC sprocket (gear for the Valve Timing).

From what I've read, it doesn't cause any damage to the engine and is mainly a noise issue.

As Iseekool has mentioned, an oil change should help.

if its a single click when reversing...then its the rear axle ...needs to be greased and rotated

otherwise if its a series of clicking noises...my guess would be brakes or wheel bearing

Hay, just got my V35 checked this afternoon, about the rear ticking noise, the mechanic disassembled the rear wheel rotors and check the wheel bearing, he's spotted nothing and i replace my rear brake pads and machined the rotors...

the noise is still there...=.= he said the car is mechanically okay maybe the shape of my 370Z 18'' wheels that i put on produce the sound by stirring up the air...so the (ticking like) sound appears at a slow speed but disappear later? i don't understand it.. so.. nothing solved LOL....

Anyone else got the same problem?

  • 1 month later...

Thought I'd update this. I've worked out that the reverse ticking noise only occurs when you ride the brake in reverse while turning the wheel (ie. Parallel park). Wierd! If I reverse without riding the brake, all is fine (still turning the wheel of course)...

    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
