I've been looking at a vspec II for sale, it's completely stock, good condition all round, only thing I noticed was the odometer was out of alignment (whether or not that means much I'm not too sure, general condition of the car seems reasonable - I'll get a MTA inspection later on). I've done some searches but most topics are over a year old, basically I'm wanting to know a rough price guide to know I'm not getting ripped off (price is $22,000), and whether the car is going to be wasted on me?

I know they're semi-collectable with only 1300 made, but for the purpose i want it for i feel like i wouldn't be treating it well, i'd be driving it a lot, and taking it to the track regularly, definitely going to get a few mods too, am I better off with a regular GTR?

In short,...

If it's a goodie, grab it - but don't forget to bargain.

Condition is reasonable? ie less than good? ie much less than really good? $22K is for excellent cond with low kms & history!

Check the speedo attachment to the cluster - been scratched/doctored? Odo numbers should only be out of alignment when you get close to a bunch of "...999"

For $22k, and if you're not looking for an "original keeper" I'd def think twice.

For around that money or a couple of grand more, you can get some pretty decent 32's with decent mods already done.

It all depends on what you want.

If its a nice car, you want to keep stock(ish) yes it might be a good buy.

If you want a GTR to punish a little/mod etc etc, you can probably get a bit more for your money if you go a run of the mil 32 GTR.

Was this at Japlink? sounds like the one I saw today. Was it marked at $28k but they said they'd sell it for $22k?

makes me think they're a bit desperate... if its the same car? I'd guess they'll accept less.

I did look at the speedo also, I'm not sure how far out of alignment it should be before its considered "wound back"

When I drove home, I looked at the speedo in my humble honda civic, and it had very similar slight misalignment, and

it's certainly never been wound back.

I'm glad new cars now have LCD odometers to help put an end to this dodgy practice.

The car is totally stock, which is what appeals to me and my grandpa like intentions for the car.

Easiest method is buying a new cluster, you can do it in the fords I know of a guy who lives near me that did it.

I could never imagine doing it though, pretty deceitful.

I'm also in the market but I haven't found one that's caught my eye yet. I think you'll find that alot of the owners will put it up for a price much more than it's worth simply because it's a GTR and they know someone will buy it eventually. I've seen 33 GTR's for 35k with torn seats + footwells, high k's etc.

Yeah I don't think I'm going to go for it. No use wasting a good vspec II on someone like me who'll take it to the track all the time.

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
