im looking at buying a decent laptop in the next few weeks and after searching around and tossing up between a few different systems, i just wanted some advice on what you guys think..

im buying it mainly for music photos and net, but sometimes i see a pc game i get excited about and dont want it to run slow with a good game, in saying that if its a really demanding game i dont mind running medium settings.

the laptop in mind is the new

all up its going to cost about $1800usd or around $1900 or so aud

I dont really know much about computers so i wanted to get some info from you guys about the above product or maybe some different options for the same price range, or max $2100 au.

also im buying it in the states and it seems to be a little cheaper there. i would also be interestede in a 13" but it would have to be a better package to sacrifice the extra inch and 15" would be my max. iv read abit about the vaio z series but for the same sort of specs its around the 2300 usd. what do you all think?

thanks alot guys.

sounds like its going to be a pretty heavy laptop, the i7 was designed as a desktop processor as opposed to a laptop. Price seems fairly good though. I rate HP's pretty high imo, try and stick with their pro/elitebook series though (can be a bit expensive sometimes), they have a unibody made out of magnesium, very solid laptop.

specs seem reasonable though, smallish screen though for gaming? depends how portable you want it.

my 0.2

need it to be a laptop, im traveling 9 months out of the year, it doesnt have to be too light either as once i get of the plane im straight home.

theres pretty much 2 other laptops i was looking at

alienwares m15x, but i heard that they have terrible support and reliability (the reports i saw where all old, is this still true for the new machines?

and maybe the mac bok pro, the specs im looking at on the mac book are

core i5

4gb ram

500gb hard drive @7200 rpm

1580x1050 hi res antiglare screen

Intel HD Graphics

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256MB

this comes in at around $2100usd wich is a little over my limit, also removing the high res screen and downgrading to a 320gb hard drive at 5200rpm reduces the price to $1800usd but those otion boxes are painfully addictive hehe

my question is will i notice the difference between the above computer and the macbook with what i need it for?

and how would the macbook pro i have chosen run games?

also will most games work on the mack book?

thanks for the info but i really need help. cheers

Is it just me or is stuff listed twice in that blob of text in the first post?

Either way, format it better - and i will have a read.

ATM its just too messy mate and hurting my eyes.

I notices briefly a SSD wasnt listed, for a laptop in todays day and age, SSD's are the only choice IMO.

yah sorry mate i know what you mean, when i tried cutting and pasting it didnt show up on my screen so i wrote a few points down. then when i posted it it came up with that that blob. anyway

Bear in mind when gaming, you'll be lucky yo get 45mins out of it before it shuts down.

A friend of mine with a i7 lappie & new GPU has similar issues.

30mins and it's pretty much flashing up warnings :P

Agree - HP is the better choice - you still want a 64GB SSD and maybe one 500GB HDD (HDD just for extra storage).

SSD's are night and day difference for laptops.

I'll be jamming one into my next PC build now they are coming down in price nicely :)

That said im not a fan of HP laptops - they pack their products with far to much spam/bloatware

I'd look to something form Toshiba personally in that price range and see if you can find something that comes close

That actually sounds decent LOL, my Asus G73 (i7 720Qm + 5870m) can only get 1.75 hours from max battery saving model, & I can't really game on battery power since both the CPU & GPU gets downclocked & won't go to normal speed till the A/C is plugged in.

Nothing that a full reformat + reinstall won't fix :P

The 1st thing I do when I get a new laptop is do a reformat + clean reinstall.

no i havnt really thought of the asus, whats it like, havnt really been a fan of the look recently. also the only reason i thought of the apple was because a freind has one and recommended it highly for its features.

toshiba seems good so ill do some searching, and ill have a look at the new f series vaio. cheers

also the only reason i thought of the apple was because a freind has one and recommended it highly for its features.

With the current Apple laptops running the same hardware (usually intel i-something + Nvidia Geforce something) as the Windows based ones, I can't see what possible 'features' it has over the standard windows ones besides OSX... unless you like the whole Apple styling thing.

    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way. Simples
    • Ok, disregard my “rate them” comment, sorry for my unrealistic input
    • OK, now we are ready to get started. You need to remove the air boxes on each side for clearance. The cover is straightforward, undo the clips on the top and lift the front cover out of the rest of the housing. If it is tight you can remove the air filters first. The rear section of the airbox is trickier. On each side you need to remove the Air flow meter wiring which is held to the airbox with a clip; you need to get behind the clip on 2 sides if you want to remove it without breaking it - unclip the harder side and pull on the clip with medium force, then unclip the easier side and it should pop out The airbox is held onto the intake hose with a spring clamp; you need to get a flat bladed screwdriver behind the spring on both sides and pop them outwards. When you have got them in the right unclipped place they will stay there and the airbox slips out pretty freely. Put a rag in the intake to prevent anything getting dropped in there, and also to prevent you seeing that the turbo seal is leaking oil (as they do). Then. The top of the radiator is held by a steel plate, it is secured by 2x10mm and 2x12mm headed bolts . Remove them and remove the plate Also grab the bushings that hold the radiator to the plate on each side so they are not lost!
    • Next, remove the upper and lower radiator hoses, both are held with a spring clamp. While you are under there, tackle the Auto Trans cooler lines.  Again both are held on with spring clamps, and as mentioned above you should cap them on the radiator side with an 8mm cap, and on the car side loop them with a length of 8mm pipe - this will stop you losing a dangerous amount of AT fluid during the rest of the job If you've been meaning to add a sender for AT trans temp, this is a great time to do it; put a sender fitting into the passenger side line as that is the inlet to the cooler/radiator.
    • Next you need to remove the intake duct (as with pretty much every job on these cars), it is a series of clips you gently remove with a flat bladed screwdriver. They do get brittle with time and can break, and I have not found a decent quality aftermarket one that fits (they are all too soft or flimsy and don't last either) but the nissan ones are a couple of bucks each (ouch).  Once the clips are off (either 8 or 10, I didn't check) you lift the intake duct out and will see the reservoirs Undo the line into the radiator side cap (some bent needle nosed piers are awesome for spring clamps) and then remove the 4x 10m nuts that hold both in place.  I didn't get these pics, but remove the line under the radiator reservoir (spring clamp again) then remove that reservoir. Then you can get at the intake reservoir, same thing, spring clamp underneath then remove it. BTW This is a great time to put in a larger (+70%) combined reservoir that AMS makes..... https://www.amsperformance.com/product/q50-q60-red-alpha-coolant-expansion-tank/ They also make an Infiniti branded and part# version if that is your thing
