I'm now in the market to cam upgrades for the R32's Rb20.

Current mods: GT-R Injectors , Bosch 040 Fuel Pump, Z32 AFM, Front Mount 300x600x76, HKS GT-RS Turbo (18-20 psi), re-tuned ecu etc.

I was intending to go with the Poncams 256 deg, 8.5 mm lift units but I am curious on the 260 deg , 8.5 mm lift lash type Procams and am wondering if they require the valve springs upgrade.

Going on the tomei specs they are the same as the Poncams other than the extra 4 deg duration?

What is it that effects the valve springs the most duration or lift or is it a combination of both?

Cams are a new thing for me so I need the advice from others with this one.

Thanks guys.

You mostly need valve springs when you start messing with larger lift. The ProCams have a sharper ramp as they have to be used with solid lifters. I have a set of 256s Poncams and 260/10.25mm Procams with solid lifter conversion and springs. The Poncams cost about $800, where as the Procams are $800, $500 for springs and $600 for the solid lifters....so far, far more expensive an option. But I am curious to see what the lift will do

no valve spring upgrade needed up until you go solid lift cams like Roy said

I had HKS 9mm 264 cams in my rb20 but if I was to do it again I would use camtech 264's 9mm lift

I emailed these guys and they recommended the 426b set. I thought that the 268 deg was a little to aggressive for the GT-RS rear housing ,they recommended that I go valve springs and titanium retainers plus adjustable cam gears ,the costs involved to do all that it seemed not worth it. ( i guess the sales guys need to make cash)

Do you think the 264's would be over aggressive for the Turbo I use?

Guys thanks for your input.

At the end of the day I wish to use a set of cams that are a drop in replacement and are fairly well suited to the turbo set up i have.

I will go with cams at first and later down the track when I free up a little more cash I will go with Adj cam gears as well.

What do you all recommend?

That sounds like a plan mate, tomei poncams are well known for being excellent drop in cams. Even without gears.

Many people have said using gears on the poncams did not gain anything as they were done so well out of the box.

Poncam + retune and smile.

    • The smart approach is to use the gearbox loom from the manual car. Makes it a lot easier - just plugs into the switches on the box and plugs into the main loom up near the fusebox. Then you only need to deal with bypassing the inhibit switch. The other approach requires you to use the wiring diagram to identify those wires by colour and location, perhaps even indulging in a little multimeter action to trace them end to end to make sure, and then.... you will have the answers you need. The R34 wiring diagram is available on-line (no, I do not have a link to it myself - I would have to do a search if I wasn't able to go to the copy I have at home).

    • @TurboTapin hey man thank you for all the info! I am about to order my cd00a today for a rb25 neo s15 build I am currently trying to get the ball rolling again on 😁 what is wrong with the Collin’s adapter? Is the bellhousing machining 15mm because that’s how thick the Collin’s adapter is or is that universal across any I decide to go with? Also do you recommend any adapter in particular? Thanks man 😃
