There's nothing wrong with working the RB20; sure, it may not have as much off-boost torque as the RB25 in the R33, but it can still go hard.

If you want to get some power, the first things to concentrate on are the intake and exhaust. Get yourself a decent cat-back system, a high-flow cat, a better front pipe and a split dump. For the intake side of things, get either a good panel replacement, or a pod and a heat-shield.

Support systems need upgrading too; a cheap upgrade is injectors from a Series 5 RX-7 (?), as well as things like an oil-catch can and an upgraded fuel pump. These things will prepare you for the next 'stage'.

After this, especially with the RB20, a new turbo is in order. The stock one can't be boosted much, nor does it flow much high in the rev range. Think R33 T3 or R34 T3. Both can be gotten cheaply, and, if needed, high-flowed. After this, a bleeder or (much preferably) an EBC (electronic-boost controller) (at around 12psi). Either a piggyback ECU (Greddy emanage) or a full ECU (PowerFC) would best go on at this stage, especially to stop the engine from running supremely rich (as it does when boosted above stock). Also, a FMIC (front-mount intercooler) should net you a few more rwkW's, and an aftermarket blow-off valve (atmo or plumback, your choice, but I'd go plumback) to stop the boost from leaking.

Now, you should be happily getting around 200rwkW's, should everything be set-up properly and nothing is wrong with the engine. Don't neglect to get better brake pads, and think about upgrading the suspension (Whiteline Handling Kit, plus some springs & pineapples).

Finally, larger wheels (17x7 will fit comfortably), decent rubber and anything visual (bodykit, wing, etc.).

Hi red17, in a 6 cylinder 270 cc injectors = 270 bhp (200 kw) less say 50 kw for losses = 150 rwkw.  Some people get a litte more.  We use Series V RX7 Turbo injectors (550 cc's).

i heard that you need to modify the plug to fit the S5 RX7 injector how did you mod yours to fit? if you have pics that would be great. thanks

Sydneykid, ok, if i understand correctly you are saying the limit of the factory injectors is around the 150rwkw mark.I know youve said before dynos are different all over the country it seems and its hard to compare figures. But for the sake of the discussion, lets.

My car dynoed 190rwhp on a dynapack (hub dyno) in pretty much stock trim, all its got is a full exhaust, turbo to tip. This equates to 143rwkw. So the stock injectors have only got lets say 10-15kw in them? Im sure theres RB20's around which would put this claim to the test.

I also recorded 218hp on the same day with higher boost, however fuelling issues were very much present, im not sure if this was down to ECU, Injectors, pump or whatever. If your statements are correct, its highly likley injectors might be responsible.

Just cut the Nissan plugs off the loom, and use RX7 ones to fit the injectors. Its the same ammount of pins etc, just a different style clip.

Hi red17, you have to have injectors that are sized to allow for acceleration enrichment, cold start and run etc. So most people allow 20% for that, leaving an injector duty around 80%. You can dip into the 20% reserve if you like but most people would not suggest it for long periods. Your 218 rwhp is 162 rwkw, which equates to 88%, OK for short periods, temporarily, but I wouldn't recommend it stay that way. Try a cold night with prolonged acceleration and you could be in trouble.

    • Hard to say, just pop the rocker covers off and have a look if you think it's cammed. You probably need to replace the valve cover gasket/half moons anyways.

    • Driveline vibration is resolved. I ended up loosening all my engine mount and trans mount bolts, giving it a good shake then retightening everything and it's gone... Let's just say I was surprised that fixed it.  I've been happily driving it around again but unfortunately put zero time into my direct port/constant pressure WMI setup. I'm on vacation next week, so I'll try and finalize it then.  On a different note, I spent all week fuel/ignition mapping 2x 216L V16 engines. Turbo's were burning glycol and we swapped them out for larger units. We also had planned emissions testing on site, so I figured I'd be there the same week to use their instrumentation and massage any emissions issues out if needed. This was a first for me. Fuel management is similar in certain ways to automotive (i.e air density as load variable) but very different in others. It's all PLC based and AFR's are controlled by air and not fuel. They use a control valve between the turbo and air manifold to control pressure which in turn controls AFR's. Due to this, target AFR tables supplied by the OEM are in pressures and not mass which really through me off. They use air pressure vs fuel pressure tables. I also relied on an O2 concentration sensor the emissions team had in the exhaust. Ignition timing was also all over the place and we were losing a fair bit of power. They're now happily sitting at 16-40BTDC depending on load. We were making about 1600kw at 900rpm at 90% load. Engines were running a lot smoother as well.
