Sanding Primer

Hi all. Got a question about sanding back paint primers. I know this has been covered in many topics before, but none has the straight clear answer I need.

I'm priming a bodykit set to prepare it for painting and I've read that the primer needs to be sanded before the paint goes on. How much does it need to be sanded back exactly to be considered as perfect and ready? Does it need to be sanded till it's real smooth or just a brief sand will do?
