Scrub
Just put a deposit down on a fairly mint 240K GL. I've always had my eyes set on one.. and it was only when I gave up looking I came across one at the local shops. Is there anything I should know about these cars? Anything to keep an eye on? warps
Just put a deposit down on a fairly mint 240K GL. I've always had my eyes set on one.. and it was only when I gave up looking I came across one at the local shops. Is there anything I should know about these cars? Anything to keep an eye on? Rust and lack of spares. In standard trim they're nothing special to drive (were great in their day, but that was compared to drum braked XA Falcons and HQ Holdens). They respond well to the usual go-fast mods (cams, carbs, exhaust, suspension) and with those mods might only be a few seconds slower than a Toyota Aurion. Sarcasm aside, they are a cool classic, and becoming more sought after. As a daily drive, it will be "cool" but not the most quiet / comfortable / fast / safe / economical thing out there. If that matters not, and you want something with some character, then they are great. If you're after something that's more fun / better to drive than a later import skyline, then you might be disappointed. Sounds like you're in love, so you'll no doubt be happy. They are generally pretty tough cars, so pretty hard to kill. Then agaqin, 40 years of abuse, neglect or poor maintenance can take its toll on anything, so who knows? Socrates
If you can find another one for cheap, get it. Parts cars are definitely worth it. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/356492-purchased-a-240k-gl/#findComment-5707429 Share on other sites
noddle
If you can find another one for cheap, get it. Parts cars are definitely worth it. I second this, you will need a parts car, you didn't say if it was a coupe or a 4 door, if it's a coupe, all the running gear, and the front end of a 4 door will fit. front window back is different. Scrub
Thanks for the tips, and it's a sedan Wouldn't mind a coupe one day. It's got some pretty average doors and front driver's fender. Not damage, just rust. Aside from that the dash has a crack in it, so need to source one of those. Apart from those "minor" faults, it's mint interior, engine bay/boot is clean and chrome work is immaculate. With donor cars, for parts like suspension does any of the other datsun's range work? (ie. 200B) Was thinking of looking into it, or are they miles apart? Factory 5
200b to 240k compatability? Well the IRS may have some similarities for starters. The L20b 4 cyl im pretty sure shares the same timing components as the L24. Suspension and brakes will depend on the year of the 200b, as im pretty sure the earlier ones had Japanese type calipers and mounting holes, then the later ones had Aus calipers (or ones readily available in Aus) And yes, they are not the comfiest or most economical, but are getting rarer each year, and cool factor / retro status is increasing. Power wise you have 30 plus years of modification options! Tripple carbs, dual carbs, big singles, EFI and turbo. My choice would be to find a wrecked MR30 skyline (factroy efi, high compression, better fuel economy if tuned well) and pull the engine & running gear from that, slot into the 240k. Although thinking outside the box is something not done too often with the 240k, like a diesel conversion or rotary! (sr20det even....) Scrub
What would one of these fetch? Chrome is immaculate, most panels rust free, minus front doors and front RH fender. Dash has a crack, otherwise interior has been covered from new (Wool seat covers) and floors always had mats. Doors trims are in perfect nick and doesn't leak. L24 Motor, doesn't have problems with cold start, ignition barrel is slightly dicky (Sticks on "Start" at times). Otherwise, minor diff noise but now I'm just being picky Thinking if I try pass it on to a workmate who is keen and has room to do the car justice. Otherwise I might have to store it until I get a shed setup or a bigger house. Factory 5
Its a buyers market really, only sells for what the buyer wants to pay. $1500 would be considered a bargain, $5000 is not going to get sold in a hurry. I missed out on one that I offered $1500 for, silly old lady sold it for $700 3 days before I had the money. It got chopped up and sent overseas for parts.
