Hey guys first post here woooo. So sorry if this is in the wrong place, admins please feel free to move it if it is.

Anyway I just got my P license a couple of weeks ago and was looking to buy a car. Ive been extremely keen on buying either a Nissan 200SX or 300ZX as i love the general shape and look of these cars, and ive also heard great things about Nissans in general. Now i dont know much about cars, and so i need some help from you guys.

The Queensland Laws in regards to high powered cars are as follows:

High powered vehicle restrictionsA high powered vehicle restriction means that you are not allowed to drive what the law calls a “high powered vehicle” on a road.

If you are:

  • under 25 and on your P1 or P2 licence
  • any age but on your P1 licence after being disqualified for an offence which happened when you were under 25

then it is against the law for you to drive a high powered vehicle on a road.

The law says that a high powered vehicle includes:

  • an engine that has a power output of more that 200 kW
  • an engine with eight or more cylinders
  • a turbo charged or supercharged engine (but not diesel powered engines).

So ive mostly been looking through the news paper and on www.carsales.com.au for a car, and am getting confused about what I am allowed to drive and what Im not allowed to drive.

Take this 300ZX for example, it specifically says non-turbo, but is its engine output under 200kW? (And yes i know its kms are quite high but im still looking and just posting it up for examples sake)

The same with this one, it also says non-turbo. (This one is 4 seater which i like more because i have friends i like to drive around). What does the cc value of an engine mean? Because i think these are both 2960cc engines.

Welcome!

If you're ever unsure about a car's power output, try wikipedia or redbook. They'll generally have what you need to know.

http://en.wikipedia....G_engine#VG30DE - The VG30DE engine the the 300ZX makes 166kw at the flywheel and is legal for Queensland provisional license holders.

The cc of an engine signifiies the displacement. In the case of the 300ZX and the 2960cc, it's a 3 Litres engine. 1000cc is the equivilent to one litre.

Just to help you out Both the 300zx and 200sx have power outputs below 200KW

like the guy above said look through wiki:

300ZX - Nissan 300ZX

200SX - Nissan Silvia

By the way im not sure there are many Non turbo/Super charged 6 Cylinder or less cars above 200KW anyway.

unfortunately, the S14 200SX was Australian delivered and they were all turbo. Therefore, you won't get a N/A S14 200sx that's legal for a QLD [P] plater.

And you're generally correct. Apart from the SIDI commodore and the V35/350Z, I can't think of many N/A 6 cylinders that make 200kw that aren't highend. Like an BMW E36 M3. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The main point is that the 300ZX is completely fine.

Edit: Toyota Aurion makes 200kw on the nose, but no one wants FWD.

One more question, do any of you guys know how good/bad the 300zx is on fuel consumption/cost?

a 300zx will have ordinary fuel economy, since they are a v6 and a bit on the heavy side. the economy would be similar to that of a commodore or falcon. somewhere in the range of 10 to 16L/100kms, depending on driving. highway will be down around 10L/100kms (or even a touch less), but heavy traffic and giving it the beans on a regular basis will see it up around 16L/100kms.

ok thanks for that piece of info, that explains why it was very very rare to find a non turbo s14 in AUS (ive only seen 1 or 2 for sale)

mad082 basically sumed it up......3.0L V6 and at roughly 1500KG it will tend to use a fair amount of fuel.

      It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!

      The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
