Hi all,

i got my first skyline about a 2 months ago and have been enjoying the ride immensely, until i stupidly took it sideways around a corner ( accidentally, i was still getting used to having a power surge at 4500rpm).

Luckily all that seems to be damaged is the passenger door and the front bar.

anyways i have a few questions

1) when i started the car for the first time in about 3 weeks I noticed that there was a hell of a lot of grey smoke coming out of the exhaust ( it is extremely cold in the Blue Mountains ATM which may have accounted for some of the smoke, but it was def more than just steam)

2) there is a weird sound coming from what seems to be the turbo while the engine is cold - it sounds as if the fan is clipping something but as soon as the engine warms up it goes away ( this was happening before the crash) i'm not sure if this is meant to happen

3) i have a boost controller in the car and if this is not down at 1psi the engine will not turn off unless i put the handbrake down ( this was also happening before i crashed) is this bad ?

apologies if these questions seem stupid or are covered in other topics but i am new to this and have no mechanical knowledge so the more information i can get the better.

also if anyone has a spare R33 GTS-T Series II front bumper they are trying to sell or get rid of i'd be more than happy to take it off your hands yes.gif

thanks

James

Hey bud, Thought me being a mechanic and a skyline owner i could give you a few answers.

# The grey smoke from the exhaust after sitting there for 3 weeks could be excess moisture burning off from inside te exhaust itself. Condensation will build up inside the exhaust especially in cold temps and being left for 3 weeks. If car is still running smooth with no problems then just keep an eye on it once you drive it more often. And make sure it doesnt have a weird smeel like burning oil or coolant(dont sniff it to long youll die lol)

# Does the car have a front mount intercooler? As in aftermarket big silver one in the front bar? If there is a big pipe running from the drivers side to the passengers side that runs over the cooling fan. If so they can touch. would have to probably hear the noise in person to pinpoint any further.

#Um the boost controller you speak of im thinking its a boost/turbo timer. This allows boost to be adjusted and the car to idle after key is turned off. If its a greddy item (most common) Check the timer setting for the turbo timer. You can also select to turn the timer off completely and the car will shut down as normal. Set boost at 10psi as a standard. If you have aftermarket boost guage check what boost the car is making to be sure everything matches up. As for the car turning off when handbrake down this is a standard safety/anti theft system which is linked to the turbo timer so a theif cant steel your car while its running with no key (also can be linked to brake pedal switch or clutch.

# Good place to find a second hand door and front bar along with anything else are SSS Automotive in Seven Hills.

Also there is a new Skyline Wreckers in Weatherill Park, just look them up on facebook they have a page.

Hope this helps any quiries just PM. My workshop is in Blacktown if your not to far up the mountains to come so i can listen.

hey James,

welcome!

Sorry to hear about the situation.

I'd consider doing some form of driver training day.

SAU NSW holds some throhghout the year.

If you have no plans, the Texi is coming up - good chance to meet some members and join the club and see these guys control their 'lines!

Quick correction, SSS are in Girraween on Gilba Road.

cheers i'll check them out asap

yea that would be great unfortunatly i wont be able to come this w/e as i have work on sunday and uni exams on monday but def keen for the next event.

the clicking noise is probably a turbo gasket failure (i.e. its torn). once it warms up it expands and seals which stops the noise from occurring. thats my guess.

i'm getting it serviced soon i'll get them to check it out .. thanks !

thanks all for your help muchly appreciated

James

and another thing my turbo timer dosn't let me go above 5 PSI which is really quite annoying lol any ideas how to fix this ?

instead of chasing your tail trying to fix crappy hardware, just swap it out for something decent and easy to use. i dont even know why a turbo timer would have anything to do with a boost controller..... but whatever. rip that crap out and run your gear separately.

The car can't boost less than the wastegate actuator is set, and though there's plenty of debate on these forums about that my gtt's one was set at 7psi exactly when I removed the stock boost solenoid from the circuit. Perhaps that is extra boost? Is it even connected?

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
