My r33 started pinging badly when i started it this morning. I haven't driven it today, just in case. I'm wondering what could be the cause? I've always filled up the car with optimax or synergy 8000. Will a simple ECU reset solve this problem? Or do i have any other problems? The only engine modification i have is a panel filter, and a bleed valve (set to 7psi). Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated.

Timing belt slipped a notch? Not sure if that would cause pinging or just break something, someone more knowledgeable might know.

I've never heard of an engine pinging at idle. My timing belt was loose when it got here from j-land and that made a noise (cant remember what sort) at idle. Pinging doesnt normally happen till the cars on load, ie: 4000+rpm with 100% throttle. When the days were warm in Perth and I still had the stock i/c I could always hear some pinging around 4000rpm on hard acceleration when running 12psi on the ebc. If the cars fairly std I cant think why it would ping at all.

    • Should be close enough. Noting that 88Nm is equivalent to 2-3 ugga duggas or one Oof. You have to use Oof on tie rods because you can't get an ugga dugga on there.
    • Cant find a torque spec in the R32 gtr manual  But there is one in the silvia manual Not sure if it's the same
    • And make sure the belts are tightened appropriately too.
    • They care about emissions, and cost the most. Save weight where possible, and make manufacturing easier. Less material also let's the engine transfer heat to water quicker, and bring the engine up to temp quicker, better for emissions and getting them past their warranty period.
    • I was under the impression the reason why OEMs are going with solutions like relatively thin "right-sized" cylinder walls with technologies like PTWA and open deck is because they care a lot about whatever marginal knock margin benefits they get from that vs the structural rigidity benefits of a closed deck block and thicker cylinder walls. I also see some weird stuff like plastic inserts in the water jacket around the cylinders to try and equalize cylinder wall temperatures. re: the PRP blocks and heads at the end of the day it's hard to know what is and isn't going to work there, just have to see what the initial buyers say about it.
