Hi Hot4`s/ JapanesseMotorsport , did a write up years back on using a Mazda RX7 turbo Core and exhaust wheel and To4 compressor wheel .. Has any one used this turbo set up .. as it seemed a good stage 1 up grade from the Std RB ceramic Turbo.. If any one has a good stage 1 turbo up grade for the RB25 around 200kw at the wheels .. let me know .. Cheers cameron

ive just built this turbo for myself.. Funny this.. I was going to ask but didnt bother.

I got a rx7 turbo given to me with hitachi core... and i got a t04 60 front cover with backing plate with i believe is a 60mm ??? not too sure... its 6.0ar or something...

Anyway i stumbled across a 300zx rear housing single turbo vg30 and sent the turbo down to a guy in sydney who put new size bearings in it and machined out the rear housing and cropped the rear wheel and fit the t04 front.. all this for around $700

This turbo should flow lots of HP as apparently the rear is supposed to be a .84 which is a decent size rear....

Anyone have an idea on what HP it would run on a rb25det pfc frmc etc etc

So you'll be using VG30DET turbine housing and stock RB25DET compressor housing?

would this upgrade be possible using the standard RB25DET rear housing?

Just wondering which RX7 turbo would you use?

Isnt the series VI and above twin turbo?

Im guessing its the ones before that?

I did this to my Skyline about 2 years ago... Response is only marginally worse, and the car made an extra 20-25rwkw (this was with cooler,pfc,exhaust,etc). Peak power was 206 rwkw from memory.

IMO - If you're pulling the turbo off yourself (like I did) then it's a worthwhile thing to do, however if you're paying someone to do it, save a bit more and buy a turbo that gives you more room to grow.

When you have 200rwkw - 200rwkw isn't enough! :(

I actually changed the front housing to a T4 60 a/r front with t4 wheel it looks massive.

rear is a large 300zx vg30 single turbo housing machined out to suit the rx7 rear wheel.

my old turbo was a small vl with a t4 front wheel machined into it and it mate 213 rwkw so im sure this upgrade with the larger rear housing and rear wheel and larger front housing would bag allot more RWKW ???

Yeah I am using the larger 300zx vg30 rear housing.. but you can use the RB25DET housing if you want. There are 2 types of rb25det housings one is bigger then the other. If you got the big one then it would be good you just got to get it machined out to suit (not 100% sure if the housing is big enough to fit the rx7 rear wheel.)

so really this turbo of mine is a 60 front and .84 rear.. i think...

the water lines fit fine.. the oil in on the turbo needs an adapter put on it that will allow you to use a banjo fitting oil line then it fit without any hassles.

after a cooler upgrade and this turbo the car has more power on 5psi then it had on 10psi

so both Series 4 or 5 core would work?

would the oil and waterlines need to be modified?

What kind of compressor wheel are you using? and how's the response with the turbo?

I dont know what the compressor wheel is the front is a garret t04 6.0A/R it would have a 55mm wheel? 60mm?.. but it looked really big compared to the old rx7 front wheel....

The rx7 rear wheel is massive, compared to the vg30 rear wheel it looks over twice the size... It was also cropped

you could easily build this turbo for under $900

My partner built this turbo for a friends vl a couple of years ago.

Vg30 exhaust housing, Rx7 core and exhaust wheel, T04E compressor, .60 comp cover. it made 237rwkw on a standard vl turbo motor on 15psi. Mods were 550cc injectors cooler,computer etc. Using the V-trim compressor would be better again. i'm probally going to use this on my R31.

i too agree, i alll too often see these hybrids on customers/friends cars and they are usually dissapointing, especially as $900-1100 on some bittsa turbo is a fair chunk out of the price second hand hks gt seriesor a new proven package. prices on tried and proven products are much better now than they were a couple of yrs ago. 400-450hp bolt on turbos kits such as the trust TD05SH-18g and hks equivs are selling new from around $2900- $3000 but its not just the power they make, more imortantly its the spread of power and the area under this power line which more than makes up the difference in price. all i can say is score a ride in a few different cars with differrent setups. (shops like JMS, d1GARAGE and ourselves usually have customers more than willing to show off their toys). if 210kw is where you want to stop a hybrid may well be worth it.

With a VL turbo with t4 front wheel on my rb25 i made 213rwkw with a supra intercooler.. upgraded the cooler and upgraded to this turbo for a total cost of $2000 for a front mount and turbo to get around 250rwkw as apposed to spending $3000 on a kit then you still got no intercooler...

I just want street performance and a few runs down the strip..

Once i get the motor fixed and get it tuned we will see what she makes...

    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off. 
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell. 
    • Final update!!! Got the front bar fitted and sprayed and all sorted now. My cutouts worked great and the indicators aren’t just falling off. 😂  
    • Is this a brand new LSD? if so, have you followed any break/bed in procedure for it? Usually involves heaps of figure 8 patterns, a fluid flush.
