I've done a fair bit of looking at Golfs, but they are just too small for me. I want to be able to chuck a few friends in easily and go over to the yorke for a weekend, etc.

Passat wagon is probably out of my price range.

Looking at the Octavia is seems like the best value for money. Big boot with a large opening, seats foldback, full volkswagen running gear, and lastly you don't see too many of them on the roads here.

Thanks again for all your imput, keep your suggestions coming.

Also Chef - How are you in general? Haven't seen you for many years now.

I find looking at Mazda 3's and 6's that they are still stuck in the 90's tech wise, whilst there is nothing wrong with that my dads new VW golf with far less power is much quicker, more refined, and gets much better fuel economy.

X-Trail would not be too bad but I don't want a tall car.

f**k I'm a picky bastard lol, but I appreciate everyones imput.

I think I'm pretty sold on the Octavia and there are plenty of them in Melbourne so it's only a one hour plane ride to pick it up :D

I'm good thanks Karl! I was thinking I hadn't seen you around here for a while!!

The more I think about it, the more I reckon an Octavia RS with DSG box is a winner. Plus, when the Tour Down Under comes past your place, you can stick some stickers on it and pretend you're a support car for the riders - hey presto, no traffic problems! :rofl2:

Righto, I'm taking a 2011 Octavia 1.4 TSI for a test drive overnight tomorrow.

I can get a brand new one for 27,300 which is over budget but i'll see how I go convincing the powers that be.

I'm in exactly the same situation as you. Also product manager, going to keep my R33 (which has served me well so far). I'm pretty sure I'll get a Mazda 6 (2007 model) hatchback for around $18k.

My Friday afternoon rant. Nothing personal here - but it might all sound a bit negative.

^^ I can only imagine Saabs are cheap 2nd hand. Nice "alternative" viewpoint here. But wow....seriously ??

SkodaThanks chef, I was just looking at the Skoda. Very nice looking car and the volkswagen running gear is a plus.Gonna look into SAAB's a bit more.

Why am I almost the only person who finds Skodas among the most hideous car around? I'm sure if they had a korean badge on them people would certainly think of them as the ugliest. Czech was world class in the late 1500's - yet to recover. Although nobody can deny their knack for classy porn films made with fantastic economies of scale.

Yep, I agree that Mazda 3 and use a lot of older technology. But they almost certainly prove more reliable when 4 to 8 years old. Mazda have also invested considerable effort into making both cars lighter than the competition and so they get quite good fuel economy and performance from basic engines. Which is actually fundamental "technology" from the future.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
