Ok so recently just bought an r33 s1 and when I picked it up realized it wasn't running right at all wasn't even making 3psi of boost so anyway on inspection when I get home started to find pop the bonnet and find an absolute mess of what these ppl had done to it (obviously had no idea what they were doing).

Ok now first of all I have the car running as best as I could get it so far after all these things I changed which included.

A series 2 throttle body and tps while still retaining a s1 loom, harness plugs weren't changed or anything just jammed in too try and fit, so replaced those and set tps back to 0.45-0.55v

Oil/air seperator was running from tapper cover PVC side to catch and right side was blocked 1 part and the other running to catch without a breather :/ so I put a breather so the motor could actually release crank case pressure.

Knock sensor the back 1. Wire was cut in half so re wired it and seemed to be fine....

Also the thick hose that runs from your air regulator I think :/ to your standard cross over pipe was plumbed in after the air flow meter but in front of the turbo lol so put it back to were it should go back up the top on the cooler pipe.

Also airflow meter was f**ked and oil was all sitting in the front pipe and mesh had been taken out of it :/ so replaced it with a good second hand 1..

Now after I had done all this car is running a hundred times better but I still have 1 problem car will not go past 5k rpm it just seems to hit like a limiter and won't go past it,

Now I've also replaced Coil packs bought from a mate they seemed to be in very good condition closely inspected each 1 to make sure there wasn't any cracks, as to find out the old 1's were full siliconed up. Any problem still there.

So pretty much I have gone through everything I can think of to try fix this Inc.

Checked all sensors

Replaced parts mentioned

Run diagnostics my self (34 knock sensor) still remains

But it's weird cause system ses it's fine then I'll check again and still comes up??

Checked ignition timing

Reset tps like a 100 times

Checked all wiring and made sure all pinouts are right on ecu.

And yer think that's about it probs a few other things I've checked as well but forgotten seriously any help or ideas would be excellent cause it's really doing my head in

Mods are

3" zorst

Are cooler kit

10psi boost

Think that's about it.

Also boost sensor solenoid has been taken out and wire has been ground.

If all else fails was thinking about buying consult cable

And DL ecu talk and see if I can find the problem that way but please somebody help me lol

Thanks guys (RBJ37) Richard :)

Hey mate it sounds like to me the timing belt is out one tooth. I have had this problem before when i replaced the timing belt. It would also drive fine untill 5000 rpm then stop reving. Took me a while to work it out but it was advanced one tooth.

Worth a look!!

Yer I I did actually think it coulda been out a tooth

Lol f**k seriously have never done twin cams before lol I've always built 30et's lol so this could be interesting

So I'm guessing I gotta get motor back to TDC and what do I new to pull crank angle sensor out? Do u count valleys and hills to go on a certain way like rb30's ??

Gahhh bloody twin cams lol thanks for the input mate guess I'll check it out :) see how I go?

Sounds to me like the factory ECU cut for airflow. Yes it is normally at 12.5 psi boost but we have usually fixed this same problem by installing a nistune

But if it's only running 10psi why would the ecu be cutting airflow at 10psi and not 12.5? And yer mate nistune is next on the cards mate was gonna get a consult cable and ecu talk to find this problem, if I can't then off too efi to get a nistune and z32 airflow meter...

Yes you need to pull the timing covers off and count the number of teeth between camshafts and crankshaft gear. I don't know the numbers off the top of my head? Do you have a workshop manual?

If not, pm me and i will dig out my manual and try help u out!

Yes I know it doesn't make sense but it is a factory flaw in the ECU cut. I have no idea why it does it. Sean explained it to me when I had the first one. I didn't want to put in a Nistune JUST to test the problem but after we had checked every single other problem, that was found to be the cause. Have had one more like it. 5k and it hits a massive wall. You can be at 5% throttle and it won't do it, bt open it up and let boost come in and it will go every time. Also if you keep the foot buried, it will keep increasing where the cut is before it can stop it.

Check the timing as suggested, because if it's hitting knock safety map then it could do the same. If you're not sure on how to check the timing. Bring it down to me or EFI and either one of us can have a look for you. It only takes a very short while to rip that top cover off and do a TDC mark check.

I also have a Consult cable you are welcome to borrow but it may be difficult if you do not have a legal version of the software. I also have a laptop with the appropriate software installed but lending that out is not really something I am keen to do

Or you can line the dots on each camwheel with their corresponding timing marks on the back cover.

Balancer, first mark at TDC.

Cheers man don't have a manual but I do have access to one online so its all good :P

Cool cool awesome man so where bouts are you located? Wouldn't mind bringing it down fir someone to have a look I can't check timing atm either cause my timing light shit it self the other day, thanks so much for the offer but I wouldn't like to be responsible for borrowing your stuff haha if you wouldn't mind if I brang it down and can't find the problem do u think u could do a consult check and such rather then borrow your gear?

Thank you so much appreciate it Mate

Yup yup no worrys budd well I had a bit of a fiddle Round today and wound the boost controller right down and it went past 5k so thinking coil packs or yer like u sed the air flow cut in the ecu, still don't get it but feels like it has half the power it should so maybe it has skipped a tooth ahhh thing gives me a head ache lol, if I still can't figure this thing out by then I'll drop down next week when u have a few minutes bro cheers bud

Hmm well after bit of a drive today that the boost wasn't the problems nor do I think it was the coil packs, I decided to pull the cam covers off and put motor back to BTDC and yer pretty sure it's out like 180'C cause neither of the cam pulley marks lined up and I made sure balancer mark was at 0'c on crank cover so yer guess I'll have to put it back so now the only problem I'm running into is when I turn the cam pulleys they don't turn far enough to line up with the markings on the pulleys so what do I do? Obviously they gotta be at the right spot other wise valve timing and everything would be out correct? Any help would be awesome thanks guys hopefully will get this thing going good eventually lol

Please take your car to someone who knows what they are doing. Yes it's a learning curve, yes it's very expensive if you stuff it up. I do not have time to do anything as I'm far too busy. I just hate seeing people attempt complex operations on their own, only to be bitten twice as hard due to their lack of experience

Yer well mate I did it myself and she is sweet as now, and yes I know it's two rotations for it to come back up put it back to TDC cams were a fair bit out each way so turned em back to timing marks put belt back on an turned crank by hand to make sure it didn't get court up on something, and yer elite I don't have much experience with twin cams but have built a few 30ets so it's not like i don't have the knowledge there already, was just a little unsure about how the cams line up a I'm use to doing single cam, but thanks everybody for the input she runs mint now can actually get some timing when I turn the cas, I really shoul have more experience with these as I do have a fully built twin cam in my Vlt but I got the motor built and haven't had to touch it yet it's only done 35 thou k's so guess I'll get more with these twin cams as I go along and as I use this as my daily now, but yer she pulls hard right till limiter now without a drama goes hard, thanks elite for the input :)

Now I'm going for a boost yehya :D

Haha glad you sorted it. I was a little worried by your last post and that you may end up breaking your engine

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
