Hey all I'm about to finish my sheetmetal trade (dec 12) I've gone as far as I can in my workplace and wanna do another trade that interests me

Which is diesel fitter ...

Any body know of any places that take adult apprentices on ?

I'm 23 so still got plenty of time to focus on another trade

Also any diesel fitters on here that can give advice on getting into the trade would be helpfull

Cheers bejay

What area are you in?

I'm about to finish my Diesel Fitting Apprenticeship, there's alot of demand for fitters, but theres also alot of people who want to do it.

I missed out on one with BMA because I didnt ask enough questions on the tour they took me for around the facility, but other then that I dont remember much else that might be helpful lol sorry

Hey mate I'm in Brisbane round archerfield :-)

And yeah I have come to realize that it's sort after trade which is sad but hopefully I can stand out enough ;-)

Also what area are u in? And what company do u work for ?

I have two places to try

Mitch's diesel service . My dads old mechanic they get alot of army vehicle contracts ... like the 6 wheel ducks and massive troop carryiers Aswell as trucks and earthmoving equipment so plenty to learn

And hasting deering . Not 100% what they do buti think its mainly earthmoving equipment

Both are good ops but I don't wanna get stuck in one spot just doing routine things it would be nice to be apart of a build from the ground up :-)

Thanks for your reply

Thanks for the link mate that's a good idea but I would need to research it I'm unsure about living there and whether or not u have to live there or not ....

I have a wife and son so I don't wanna leave them to pursue a career if that makes sense ?

I work for Komatsu in Mackay.

Don't ask me about Hastings, there the opposition for me and I'm a bit biased :P

If you can get your trade down there, and want to make a bucket of money later on, you can get a fly in fly out roster out west from here. I'm planning on heading out there for a few years just to get a house deposit

Going off what I know, In brisbane you would mainly be dealing with construction equipment (Excavators, Backhoes, Graders maybe) and the occasional dozer and smaller dump truck.

I work mainly on large Dozers, large dump trucks and Loaders.

if your gonna be working on mainly excavators you'll probably be doing a fair bit of hydraulics. I knew next to nothing about hydraulics when I started but I really enjoy it.

Yeah the whole fly in fly out idea is ok I'd be happy to do that if it pays of in the end hahaha

Are u an adult apprentice ? If u don't mind me asking what sorta money is first year looking at ?

Have they fast tracked u at all ? Or have u done the full 4 years ?

Sorry for all the qs mate but it's helpful talking to some one who knows what there talking about

Hey mate, it all depends on what you think you will enjoy. Rebuilds/ maintence/ hydraulics/ troubleshooting/ refitting/ etc, etc. Then once you know that you can start looking at a company that does it. Alot of shops do different things. I used to work for mtu where i did heaps of rebuilds/refits in white boats. Not to mention a heap of troubleshooting and truck work. Now i work for a mainly hydraulic and industrial workshop.

I'm not mature age, but we do have mature age apprentices. I think about $26/hr is the mature age apprenticeship rate, but not 100% cause both mature age apprentices are on higher rates cause they've been with the company for a while before they got apprenticeships (as labourers)

I started on $11 an hour but lol :(

I'm pretty much doing the full 4 years, but there trying to fast track people now (to much if you ask me, they want to bring it down to 18mnthsor something stupid)

As above but, work for Cummins, Detroit etc you'll be doing alot of engine rebuilds, servicing and repairs (specific)

Work for a company that produces the machines and you'll be doing a variety of different things, I do everything from hydraulics to welding to auto electrical stuff with what I do

I would like to do rebuild some hydraulics and trouble shooting would be fun but at the end of the day as long as I am doing something interesting on something with an engine I'm happy

Hahahaha but mainly would live to do the engine rebuilding for machinery and trucks .....

Who do u work for now kerin?

Machinery places seem more to my liking the variety of work would be awsomE to learn a lil on everything ...

With the welding side do u guys just use stick and mig? I dare say flux core mig?

I have been doing sheet metal for over 5 years now and a confident tig welder also have just spent the last year with the boiler making side of the company so have done alot off mig on various thickness and types of steel....

flux core and gmaw

As for stick I have done a bit of it but not daily ...Hopefully that still looks good on the resume ...

Hey mate, i work for a company called Ausdraulics, engine repower. We have the contracts for all the Holcim quarries and Qni refineries etc in townsville. We also are the deutz/volvo industrial dealers. Im basically done (just waiting for tafe) and ive only done 3.5 yrs atm. Again it all depends on the company

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
