I am contemplating getting a pre-purchase inspection done on a car that I am looking at purchasing and need a recommendation on who would be very good in this regard.

The inspection needs to be comprehensive with mechanical tests including compression/leakdown tests, cooling system pressure test, paint, prior accident damage, revs check etc with a comprehensive written report prepared including photos.

I am an interstate potential buyer. The test could be done onsite or car taken to a workshop. They need to know the GTRs or imports in general pretty well though. Perth area say within 30-40km.

Any help much appreciated.

with Paint depth analysis. Being mobile is handy. Did my BMW and did a great job. I would look at doing that, and a workshop to check out the engine/trouble spots.

Yet to see a workshop do a great write up.

I had the same reservations about a workshop doing a very good written condition report as it just does not happen in my experience.

A1 don't do compression tests so may have to get that done by one of the workshops recommended here, but he may have an idea by listening to the engine etc.

Would this guy be OK in checking a GTR out, he's probably used to checking many more modern cars.

Thanks.

Consolidated workshop thread...

Else Hyperdrive gets my vote

Yeah, saw that thread but wanted peoples more recent experiences and given I want electrical, paint etc also checked at the same time. I will look into Hyperdrive.

C-Red

All Star Garage

X-Speed

Hyperdrive

Those are, in no particular order some of the bigger names in the Perth import scene.

Which couple would you lean to more for a R32 GTR and who have had probably more experience in the industry to give me an overall informed opinion, which covers all general areas mechanical, electrical, body etc.?

I had 3 x R32 GTR inspected at All Star Garage and 1 x R34 GTR inspected at C-Red. The reports given to me were just written on a piece of lined paper and highlighted the problems with the car. Compression and leakdown tests were done as well. Written 'report' was pretty average but did re approach the mechanics who actually did the reports and had a good chat afterwards. Ant (X-Speed), Sean (All Star) and Marc (C-Red) all know their GTR's in my opinion.

Find out which workshop the owner takes his car to and make sure you choose a different one!! Getting a workshop to do a 3rd party inspection on their own car is kinda pointless...

Hence I recommended getting a shop to check the motor and normal GTR trouble spots :)

The newer the car the more of a pain to check IMO, and he was fine with my BMW, as I mentioned.

As there isn't any "Stateroads" over here, he is your best bet for paint depth, and the rest. Check a sample.

Thanks all for your replies, very informative.

I will now choose wisely based on above advice.

    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.
    • Lock me in mate, although I'm not sure if I'll be heading up from Goulburn or down from Sydney, either way, return will be back to Goulburn
    • Sounds good, we will aim to be there! @The Bogan I'll give you a shout if you are heading up to campbelltown for the meet too.
    • Before I get to the test day, just to finish off the android head unit. This is a demo from car start up....the standard/host system takes a few seconds to boot (same as all v37) but Android comes up quickly. In this vid I'm using the delivered launcher but have set the default to Agami since which is easier to navigate when if use primarily 5 apps. You can see the host system still takes over when required eg putting it in reverse, and you can switch between Android and not by holding the back button 3 sec. It is pretty responsive (fast) but you can see I had to press harder than expected a couple of times.  I still have the phone connected to the stock system, and that also seamlessly takes over Android music playing. v37-android-demo.mp4 The bigger reason that I put this in though is so that I can use Ecutek directly on the head unit. That gives me a dash with logging (up to 20MB only), high and low value warnings on any parameter etc etc. I've run a USB cable from the Ecutek OBD dongle to a USB input on the unit, easy. v37-ecutek-demo.mp4   The unit did freeze on the launcher the other day, I think Agami was trying to verify the license when it didn't have a data connection...will monitor and report back if there are any other problems but so far I'm very happy with the upgrade.
    • Nah that is just crappy GPS mapping, I did have a small excursion (cold tyres, damp track, surprise!), will post up that when I get a chance.
