Hi there people of the V community i just thought i might ask for some help... So i bought a HKS true dual exhaust kit for my 04 v35 coupe which is on my car at the moment this is only from the standard cat to back, Now i wanted to by some headers and i wanted to get something to replace the CAT... alot of people were telling me how good it is without it maybe a straight pipe from the headers? Also i am going to get a mapless tune done to the car after all of this is installed, If there is anyone out there who could give me a hand on what is good to get or how ever you's have done it to your V and got some great power out of it let me know it will be much apreciated and also i don't mind whatever price it is as long as it is reasonable thanks heaps peeps :).

I wouldn't go with straight pipes unless you're willing to pay a hefty fine. It really depends if you're keeping the car NA or going FI... The best gains mods for NA are plenum spacers and high flow cats or straight pipe (Motordyne ART pipes).

So your pretty much saying if i go straight pipes i could get caught due to what condition?..... Yeh i will be keeping the car NA so u rekon go with the plenum spacers and high flow cats or straight pipe with motordyne. How about the headers?

EPA, the smell is detectable and if the cops look underneath your car... There are many people out there that have straight pipes or various forms of it on, but that's the risk they are willing to take.

Yup, I am ordering a plenum spacer and high flow cats as we speak. But with the headers, you won't get much gain from it. Although I would like to upgrade the header as well, I heard it a headache to install... :(

Ahh ok hmmm im thinking of doing the same i guess now that u mentioned the plenum spacer aswell i will be getting that, And the reason why i was going to get the headers aswell is cause i was going to do a mapless tune after everything is done but if the headers dont give any power to it then there's no point in getting it.

There are gains with them, but they are small enough for people to think its not value for money. But if money (min $700 excluding shipping) isn't a issue, I'll say go for it and have a full exhaust system upgrade. :)

Ahh well if it's not much gain then i'll just stick to getting a high flow cat and a motordyne plenum. What brand are you going for the cat? and im pretty sure your going to get a motordyne plenum aswell yeh

I initially was going to buy the Berk Techs, but I heard recently their not so good as I heard they make your exhaust sound a lot raspy and some tendency to be defective (i.e. crack or whatever). But I think that's just the nature of catalytic convertors, can be damaged easily. So that's why I chose to get the cheapest which was the Kinetix Racing and it's SMOG compliant. As long as the HFC does the job, that's all it matters.

I ended up getting the Berk and love them. I noticed a power increase as well. It has a rasp however but that was expected from a HFC. I know Nighcrawler had to mod his Kinteix to fit. The standard cat/Fujitsubo combo sounded so much smooother though however the gains of the HFC are good compared to the stock cat.

Andrew at AM Performance ended up having to cut the passenger side Kinetix hfc in 2 places to get it to fit perfectly. Cost me $120 as it required removing the hfc and refitting a couple of times as well as the cuts and mig welding. Was spewing i didn't fork out the extra $200 or so for the titanium hfcs of another brand in the end. I emailed the US seller to tell him that the Kinetic hfcs do not fit properly and I am pissed off about it, but he didn't even take the time out to reply. Bolt-on my ass.

The Berk is compliant as well. Minimum for Australia is I'm pretty sure 200CPI is as low as you can 'legally' go. Not knocking the Kinetix build quality but something to consider. :-)

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
    • I haven’t yet cut the chassis, maybe I switch to a reverse flow. I’ve got the Intercooler mounted as I already had it but not cut yet. Might have to speak to an engineer
    • Yes that’s another issue, I always have a front mount, plus will be turbo plus intake will big hasstle. I’ve been told if it looks stock they’re fine with it by a couple others who have done it ahahaha.    I know @Kinkstaah said the stock gtt airbox is limiting but I might just have to do that to avoid a defect so it atleast looks legit. Or an enclosed pod so it’s hidden away and feed air from the snorkel and below Intercooler holes like kinstaah mentioned. Hmm what to do
