As some of you are awared, I've been lurking on this forum because I love the skylines......and you guys too :headspin: I hope you guys don't mind :)

I don't have a skyline and love to get a GTR down the track. I actually own a s2000. :wassup: The S2000 parts are pissy weak compare to your skylines. My engine is being rebuilt atm. My next weakest link will be the differential. The S2000 has a torsen diff and an aluminium casing. Most s2k with a little bit extra power tend to crack the diff housing clean.

I've been thinking about mechanical diff, silvia cusco/kaaz diff or a skyline diff.

All of the diffs will need custom fitting for the s2k as there is none strenthened s2k diff available in Japan.

What would you guys recommend for a strong, lighweight and inexpensive complete differential?

dont think the mech diff is lighter? not sure, they are both not very light items.

New mech diff is around the 2K mark, second hand, depends on if you get lucky or not, but reasonable price is between 800-1.2k for good condition from what I have seen.

Not sure what a stock diff is worth - make me an offer:)

could someone kindly explain the differences in the differential betweent a gtr vs gts and r32 vs r33? (I don't think it will be economical for a r34 diff :P)

how easy is it to blow a diff for you guys eg what kind of power output will blow a for example gts diff?

gts diff wont blow, but it will open wheel as its a viscous type.

A mech diff is not viscous, it is Mechanical inside so basically is alot stronger. for ur type of driving, a 1.5way mech diff is what u want. This is made for circuit racing aswell as daily driving etc.

Check out the s2k forum as they would know alot more then us about puttin a better diff into ur car aswell as what types are available.

everything you ever wanted to know about mechanical diffs. If you want to get into a bit of dorifto, go the two way. If you dont want to get into a bit of dorifto, go the two way:)

If you can source a 1.5 way that is fine too I suppose, I have a two way - very predictable, and if you get sideways and back off too quickly, you dont have to worry about the rear end swinging to the other side of the road, it just gently pulls back in.

Just be warned, they can go clunk alot, and make alot of noise in service stations and car parks when the wheels lock and you are turning corners at slow speeds.

I would say that I knew most things about the s2k diff and it's aftermarkets. It's the first weakest link in our drivetrain you know. It did not take long for "Phoenix" to break 2 diffs with his stock/near stock power :throwup:

Sad to report that the strongest way of strengthening the s2k diff thus far is a set of kaaz/cusco lsd, J's 4.44 crown+ pinion (which I have), comptech reinforced diff housing and drop most of these stuffs in a cryogenic tub. Unfortunately some owners have reported failure with only mod power output (300hp). I am afraid that this combination won't be any good for me.....prob around 300rwk if it ever finish :P

busky2k, the only place that does it is in sydney. It's too heavy to send most of the diff up there and it prob won't last any way.

So is there any difference between the gtr and gts rear diff?

Is there any difference in r32 vs r33 rear diff?

R33GTSt - 4.11:1, R32GTSt - 4.3#:1

not sure about the GTR, as it had a larger engine.

If I had to choose, I would say go the R32 GTS diff, its shorter = more torque:)

BTW, D1 garage had (think they still have it) a TRD diff centre, dont know if its any good to you.

It's no fun having enough power to embarass some V8 and do rolling start with every drag :)

Given that most of you guys claim to go through Maccas in under 10sec on the other thread :wassup: I figure that I will need to adopt some skylines parts to hang around with the best :)

Is there much difference between the viscous oem diff and the 1.5 mechanical diff in term of driving dan?

    • I don't like "actual computers" for in car use. They take time to boot up, have OS annoyances, and so on. Arduinos etc are ready to go a few seconds after power on, don't mind being agressively powere cycled, because everything is non-volatile, don't mind being shaken and stirred.
    • As Fred would tell us, it's all about interpreting the rules. It's not a water sprayer, it's a water mister... But everything else you've said, 100%! Even a raspberry Pi would be great, use HDMI out for a display, and add a raspberry Pi CANBus hat to read values out from the ECU.
    • Being a race car, and being in the era of the Arduino, one would think it would take little effort to build a controller to do the spraying based on a real physical measurment. Waaaaay back in the dim dark AS days, JE "designed" (as in, he had help) a microcontroller based intercooler spray system. It watched the difference between a temp sensor stuck on the core and one in the free air in front of the cooler, and if the temperature difference exceeded a (settable) threshold, it would activate the sprays. Thus, it only ran water when there was an actual need for water. If you stop to think about the actual physical things that are going on in that stack of coolers, there's probably at least a couple of triggering conditions one could come up with, and one could probably even run one pump with more than one solenoid valve, to allow water to be placed where it is needed, or at all points at once (if it is needed at all points). We're in the age of science baby. But.... I suspect that intercooler water sprays are on the forbidden list in most circuit classes, no? So only good for Targa type stuff?
    • I'll just leave this with, holy shit, those cars at work are awesome, and this will look wicked!
    • Could you modify this duct so instead it pushes the extra air through the radiator too and not down and out? For temps, I know it's not the greatest idea, but as a bit of a last resort, you could use a very intermittent misting spray onto the front of the coolers/rad. You don't want to be soaking them such that water is dripping off, but a small most on/off so that the water evaporates. That point of it constantly evaporating, rather than being soaked in water, will pull a LOT of heat out of the cooler. I'm literally thinking just the little mist sprayers for a garden from Bunnings. Being in a low humidity climate it will help even more! The other trick if you want to be ghetto is some shade cloth hung in the opening, and keep it wet. Pretty much now it's acting like an evap cooler on a house, but cooling the air you need to use to cool the radiator...   On a topic to think about too though, when air enters through the bumper, is it all nicely ducted from the edges of that opening back at a nice angle, or is it like most cars, and the edge of the opening just stops, and suddenly it's wayyy wider behind that? If it does the later, get it shrouded out at nice angles. When that opening changes too rapidly, it can actually cause a high pressure zone between the front bar and radiator, and limit air flow into that area, which means less air for cooling, as it effectively stalls the air, AND adds to drag...
